    Sources of funds and investment activities of venture capital funds: evidence from Germany, Israel, Japan and the United Kingdom

    We compare the investment activities and sources of finance of venture capital (VC) funds in Germany, Israel, Japan and the United Kingdom. VC investments differ across countries in terms of their stage, sector and geographical focus. Sources of VC funds also differ across countries; for example, banks are particularly important in Germany and Japan, corporations in Israel, and pension funds in the United Kingdom. Although the differences in investments are related to funding sources--for example, bank and pension fund-backed VCs invest in later stage activities than individual and corporate backed funds--a large proportion of variation within as well as between countries is unrelated to sources of finance. Moreover, differences in the relation between funding source and VC activity are unrelated to the country's financial systems. We conclude that neither financial systems nor sources of finance are the main explanations for the pronounced differences in VC activities

    Drosophila Bruce Can Potently Suppress Rpr- and Grim-Dependent but Not Hid-Dependent Cell Death

    Bruce is a large protein (530 kDa) that contains an N-terminal baculovirus IAP repeat (BIR) and a C-terminal ubiquitin conjugation domain (E2) 1, 2. BRUCE upregulation occurs in some cancers and contributes to the resistance of these cells to DNA-damaging chemotherapeutic drugs [2]. However, it is still unknown whether Bruce inhibits apoptosis directly or instead plays some other more indirect role in mediating chemoresistance, perhaps by promoting drug export, decreasing the efficacy of DNA damage-dependent cell death signaling, or by promoting DNA repair. Here, we demonstrate, using gain-of-function and deletion alleles, that Drosophila Bruce (dBruce) can potently inhibit cell death induced by the essential Drosophila cell death activators Reaper (Rpr) and Grim but not Head involution defective (Hid). The dBruce BIR domain is not sufficient for this activity, and the E2 domain is likely required. dBruce does not promote Rpr or Grim degradation directly, but its antiapoptotic actions do require that their N termini, required for interaction with DIAP1 BIR2, be intact. dBruce does not block the activity of the apical cell death caspase Dronc or the proapoptotic Bcl-2 family member Debcl/Drob-1/dBorg-1/Dbok. Together, these results argue that dBruce can regulate cell death at a novel point

    In vitro activity of bedaquiline against rapidly growing nontuberculous mycobacteria

    Bedaquiline (BDQ) has been proven to be effective in the treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. We hypothesized that BDQ could be a potential agent to treat nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infection. The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro activity of BDQ against rapidly growing mycobacteria by assessing the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) against 18 NTM strains. For MIC determination we performed the resazurin microtitre assay broth dilution, and for the MBC the c.f.u. was determined. BDQ exhibited a strong inhibitory effect against most NTM tested; however, for some NTM strains the MBC was significantly higher than the MIC. A new finding is that Mycobacterium flavescens has a mutation in the gene atpE associated with natural resistance to BDQ. These preliminary promising results demonstrate that BDQ could be potentially useful for the treatment of NTM

    One of the effort to increase the duck support to egg production was necessary to consideration some factors. One of the factor was feed. Parameter to determined egg quality namely : yolk index, and haught unit (HU). IKT (Yolk Index) was a comparison between yolk and yolk diameter. Whereas HU was a quality parameter of egg freshness which was numbered based on the high of albumen and egg weight. The aim of this research was to know the yolk index and Haugh Unit. The local egg duck from some culture place in Java and to know the management from each place as knowledge to duck farmer to optimalized the management duck culture. The sample was got from four place culturing in Java, namely Kroya Cirebon Village (A), Pasar Bawang Brebes Village (B), Kalijoso Magelang Village (C), dan Modopuro Mojokerto Village (D), each of them 20 eggs. The Methode which used in this research was with egg measurement the parameter, such as measurement the weight duck, egg weight, albumen high, yolk hight, yolk diameter. The measurement of IKT and HU was done in structure and function of animal biology laboratory. The research design that be used was Completely Randomozed Design with SAS programme. The product of IKT and HU from four culturing duck place in Java were different, IKT has range rata (A) 0.419, (B) 0.463, (C) 0.482, and (D) 0.492. whereas the range of HU value were A) 86.93, (B) 97.53, (C) 100.33, (D) 99.45. this was caused by the difference of management from kind of feed offering, the management that can choosed to applied for other duck farmer, such as from the duck farmer from Modopuro Mojokerto Village and Kalijoso Magelang Village

    Sodium reduction regulations in South Africa – the consumer perspective

    The prevalence of adult hypertension has increased at an alarming rate in recent years in South Africa. Salt reduction legislation is considered a cost-effective way to reduce this burden, as salt is a driver of hypertension. This cross-sectional, descriptive study aimed to determine consumers’ awareness of, and perceptions towards, the salt legislation, and their salt consumption habits. An interviewer-administered survey was used to gather data from literate adult consumers (N=583) at four randomly selected shopping malls in the Tygerberg Health sub-district, City of Cape Town. More than half (56.9%) of all participants tried to consume less salt because they thought it was healthier (38.3%) yet processed foods were a major source of salt in their diets (50.4%). Only 16.5% of participants were aware of the national salt legislation. Almost half of participants (47.9%) thought the legislation would affect the taste of food negatively, yet 80.9% have not noticed a change after implementation of the first phase of the legislation. To conclude, regulating manufacturers of food products could facilitate a reduction in population salt intake. An integrative strategy and collaboration between all stakeholders with regards to legislation, labelling and health education is needed in order to achieve health targets for population salt reduction

    BACKGROUND: The toxic effects of many simple organic compounds stem from their biotransformation to chemically reactive metabolites which bind covalently to cellular proteins. To understand the mechanisms of cytotoxic responses it may be important to know which proteins become adducted and whether some may be common targets of multiple toxins. The literature of this field is widely scattered but expanding rapidly, suggesting the need for a comprehensive, searchable database of reactive metabolite target proteins. DESCRIPTION: The Reactive Metabolite Target Protein Database (TPDB) is a comprehensive, curated, searchable, documented compilation of publicly available information on the protein targets of reactive metabolites of 18 well-studied chemicals and drugs of known toxicity. TPDB software enables i) string searches for author names and proteins names/synonyms, ii) more complex searches by selecting chemical compound, animal species, target tissue and protein names/synonyms from pull-down menus, and iii) commonality searches over multiple chemicals. Tabulated search results provide information, references and links to other databases. CONCLUSION: The TPDB is a unique on-line compilation of information on the covalent modification of cellular proteins by reactive metabolites of chemicals and drugs. Its comprehensiveness and searchability should facilitate the elucidation of mechanisms of reactive metabolite toxicity. The database is freely available a

    Laboratory study of the impact of repetitive electrical and mechanical stimulation on brown shrimp Crangon crangon

    Pulse trawling is currently the best available alternative to beam trawling in the brown shrimp Crangon crangon and Sole Solea solea (also known as Solea vulgaris) fisheries. To evaluate the effect of repetitive exposure to electrical fields, brown shrimp were exposed to the commercial electrodes and pulse settings used to catch brown shrimp (shrimp startle pulse) or Sole (Sole cramp pulse) 20 times in 4 d and monitored for up to 14 d after the first exposure. Survival, egg loss, molting, and the degree of intranuclear bacilliform virus (IBV) infection were evaluated and compared with those in stressed but not electrically exposed (procedural control) and nonstressed, nonexposed (control) brown shrimp as well as brown shrimp exposed to mechanical stimuli. The lowest survival at 14 d (57.3%) occurred in the Sole cramp pulse treatment, and this was significantly lower than in the group with the highest survival, the procedural control (70.3%). No effect of electrical stimulation on the severity of IBV infection was found. The lowest percentage of molts occurred in the repetitive mechanical stimulation treatment (14.0%), and this was significantly lower than in the group with the highest percentage of molts, the procedural control (21.7%). Additionally, the mechanically stimulated brown shrimp that died during the experiment had a significantly larger size than the surviving individuals. Finally, no effect of the shrimp startle pulse was found. Therefore, it can be concluded that repetitive exposure to a cramp stimulus and mechanical stimulation may have negative effects on the growth and/or survival of brown shrimp. However, there is no evidence that electrical stimulation during electrotrawls would have a larger negative impact on brown shrimp stocks than mechanical stimulation during conventional beam trawling

Design: Cross-sectional, descriptive study. Setting: Stellenbosch University, Western Cape. Subjects: Six foodservice managers, 63 catering personnel and 517 students participated in the study. Outcome measures: A weighed-food wastage study was conducted at seven selected residences during lunch and supper on three non-consecutive weekdays. Food service managers (FSMs) and catering personnel completed interviewer-administered questionnaires, while SU students completed an electronic survey. Results: Ninety percent of students preferred the standard menu options, despite a relatively high average plate waste of 16.9%. More production waste was generated during lunch than supper. The male residence generated more plate waste. Even though students requested larger servings of vegetables, the wastage of these items was high. Factors contributing to wastage were the booking system, menus and serving style, meal plan stipulating the serving of dessert and serving of a large starch portion. All FSMs and 88.5% catering personnel considered it important to reduce food wastage to a minimum. Conclusion: Education of catering personnel and students regarding food waste reduction measures is crucial. A representative forum including students, catering companies and faculty management should be involved when seeking solutions to reduce food wastage and improve communication.     The Effects of Periodically Gapped Time Series on Cross-correlation Lag Determinations

    The three bright TeV blazars Mrk 421, Mrk 501 and PKS 2155-404 are highly variable in synchrotron X-ray emission. In particular, these sources may exhibit variable time lags between flux variations at different X-ray energy bands. However, there are a number of issues that may significantly bias lag determinations. Edelson et al. (2001) recently proposed that the lags on timescales of hours, discovered by ASCA and BeppoSAX, could be an artifact of periodic gaps in the light curves introduced by the Earth occultation every \~1.6 hr. Using Monte Carlo simulations, in this paper we show that the lags over timescales of hours can not be the spurious result of periodic gaps, while periodic gaps indeed introduces uncertainty larger than what present in the evenly sampled data. The results also show that time lag estimates can be substantially improved by using evenly sampled light curves with large lag to bin-size ratio. Furthermore, we consider an XMM-Newton observation without interruptions and re-sample the light curves using the BeppoSAX observing windows, and then repeat the same cross correlation function (CCF) analysis on both the real and fake data. The results also show that periodic gaps in the light curves do not significantly distort the CCF characters, and indeed the CCF peak ranges of the real and fake data overlap.
