Raman Spectroscopy of Graphene, Graphite and Graphene Nanoplatelets
The theoretical simplicity of sp2 carbons, owing to their having a single atomic type per unit cell, makes these materials excellent candidates in quantum chemical descriptions of vibrational and electronic energy levels. Theoretical discoveries, associated with sp2 carbons, such as the Kohn anomaly, electron-phonon interactions, and other exciton-related effects, may be transferred to other potential 2D materials. The information derived from the unique Raman bands from a single layer of carbon atoms also helps in understanding the new physics associated with this material, as well as other two-dimensional materials. The following chapter describes our studies of the G, D, and G′ bands of graphene and graphite, and the characteristic information provided by each material. The G-band peak located at ~1586 cm−1, common to all sp2 carbons, has been used extensively by us in the estimation of thermal conductivity and thermal expansion characteristics of the sp2 nanocarbon associated with single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT). Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of functionalized graphene nanoplatelet aggregates doped with argon (A), carboxyl (B), oxygen (C), ammonia (D), fluorocarbon (E), and nitrogen (F), have also been recorded and analyzed using the Gwyddion software
Treatment for T1DM patients by a neuro-fuzzy inverse optimal controller including multi-step prediction
Diabetes Mellitus is a serious metabolic condition for global health associations. Recently, the number of adults, adolescents and children who have developed Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) has increased as well as the mortality statistics related to this disease. For this reason, the scientific community has directed research in developing technologies to reduce T1DM complications. This contribution is related to a feedback control strategy for blood glucose management in population samples of ten virtual adult subjects, adolescents and children. This scheme focuses on the development of an inverse optimal control (IOC) proposal which is integrated by neural identification, a multi-step prediction (MSP) strategy, and Takagi–Sugeno (T–S) fuzzy inference to shape the convenient insulin infusion in the treatment of T1DM patients. The MSP makes it possible to estimate the glucose dynamics 15 min in advance; therefore, this estimation allows the Neuro-Fuzzy-IOC (NF-IOC) controller to react in advance to prevent hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic events. The T–S fuzzy membership functions are defined in such a way that the respective inferences change basal infusion rates for each patient's condition. The results achieved for scenarios simulated in Uva/Padova virtual software illustrate that this proposal is suitable to maintain blood glucose levels within normoglycemic values (70–115 mg/dL); furthermore, this level remains less than 250 mg/dL during the postprandial event. A comparison between a simple neural IOC (NIOC) and the proposed NF-IOC is carried out using the analysis for control variability named CVGA chart included in the Uva/Padova software. This analysis highlights the improvement of the NF-IOC treatment, proposed in this article, on the NIOC approach because each subject is located inside safe zones for the entire duration of the simulatio
Direct medical costs of severe asthma in two colombian reference centers
Objectives: Severe asthma, although infrequent, generates an important clinical and economic burden in both patients and healthcare system. We aimed to describe demographic and clinical characteristics, exacerbations, healthcare resource utilization (HRU), and annual direct medical costs in a severe asthma patient cohort in Colombia. Methods: Cost ofillness study from payer perspective. Patients with clinicianconfirmed severe asthma diagnosis (GINA criteria) from two specialized reference centers between January 2014 and August 2018 were included. The last year within this period under GINA step 4/5 therapy was observed for each patient. Clinical information was extracted from medical records, and HRU from hospital invoices and public price lists. Results: 147 patients were included, 59% female. Mean (6SD) age and time with asthma diagnosis was 46615 and 21617 years, respectively. Most frequent comorbidities were allergic rhinitis (70%), conjunctivitis (27%) and hypertension (19%). Most common sensitization cause was house dust mite (61%). Median baseline blood eosinophil count was 260 cells/ml (range 10-4,040), mean total IgE serum level was 69761,893 IU/ml. The mean annual frequency of HRU was 5.064.0 for laboratory tests, 4.161.2 for medical visits, 1.061.5 for emergency visits, 0.360.7 for hospitalizations, and 0.160.3 for ICU. Omalizumab was prescribed in 42.2% of patients, with a mean among users of 30.2620.3 vials per year. Mean annual direct cost for outpatient care was 4,743.666,331.1 USD (range 256.7-31,286.1) (1 USD=2,956.4 COP); medications were responsible for 98% of costs. Data from 55 hospitalizations was obtained, 4 in ICU. Mean stay and cost per episode were 6.564.9 days and 1,010.561,379.9 USD in general ward, and 14.164.1 days and 3768.963748.2 USD in ICU. Conclusions: Severe asthma is a costly disease for the Colombian health system. Most of the direct outpatient medical costs in this cohort were caused by pharmacological therapy, particularly omalizumab. Funding: GSK (PRJ2813
Thermal and phase transformations analysis in a PREMOMET® steel
Thermal analysis in a PREMOMET® steel has been performed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and highresolution dilatometry. The phase transformation temperatures (Ac1, Ac3, Ms and Mf) of this steel were obtained by the two methods at different heating rates showing good agreement between both techniques. The enthalpy of α-γ transformation for this steel was measured using the thermograms acquired by DSC and microstructure was analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results showed that this steel retained a martensitic structure for all conditions

Resolving the age bimodality of galaxy stellar populations on kpc scales
Galaxies in the local Universe are known to follow bimodal distributions in
the global stellar populations properties. We analyze the distribution of the
local average stellar-population ages of 654,053 sub-galactic regions resolved
on ~1-kpc scales in a volume-corrected sample of 394 galaxies, drawn from the
CALIFA-DR3 integral-field-spectroscopy survey and complemented by SDSS imaging.
We find a bimodal local-age distribution, with an old and a young peak
primarily due to regions in early-type galaxies and star-forming regions of
spirals, respectively. Within spiral galaxies, the older ages of bulges and
inter-arm regions relative to spiral arms support an internal age bimodality.
Although regions of higher stellar-mass surface-density, mu*, are typically
older, mu* alone does not determine the stellar population age and a bimodal
distribution is found at any fixed mu*. We identify an "old ridge" of regions
of age ~9 Gyr, independent of mu*, and a "young sequence" of regions with age
increasing with mu* from 1-1.5 Gyr to 4-5 Gyr. We interpret the former as
regions containing only old stars, and the latter as regions where the relative
contamination of old stellar populations by young stars decreases as mu*
increases. The reason why this bimodal age distribution is not inconsistent
with the unimodal shape of the cosmic-averaged star-formation history is that
i) the dominating contribution by young stars biases the age low with respect
to the average epoch of star formation, and ii) the use of a single average age
per region is unable to represent the full time-extent of the star-formation
history of "young-sequence" regions.Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, MNRAS accepte
Nonlinear damping in mechanical resonators based on graphene and carbon nanotubes
Carbon nanotubes and graphene allow fabricating outstanding nanomechanical
resonators. They hold promise for various scientific and technological
applications, including sensing of mass, force, and charge, as well as the
study of quantum phenomena at the mesoscopic scale. Here, we have discovered
that the dynamics of nanotube and graphene resonators is in fact highly exotic.
We propose an unprecedented scenario where mechanical dissipation is entirely
determined by nonlinear damping. As a striking consequence, the quality factor
Q strongly depends on the amplitude of the motion. This scenario is radically
different from that of other resonators, whose dissipation is dominated by a
linear damping term. We believe that the difference stems from the reduced
dimensionality of carbon nanotubes and graphene. Besides, we exploit the
nonlinear nature of the damping to improve the figure of merit of
nanotube/graphene resonators.Comment: main text with 4 figures, supplementary informatio
Capacitive Spring Softening in Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Nanoelectromechanical Resonators
We report the capacitive spring softening effect observed in single-walled
carbon nanotube (SWNT) nanoelectromechanical (NEM) resonators. The nanotube
resonators adopt dual-gate configuration with both bottom-gate and side-gate
capable of tuning the resonance frequency through capacitive coupling.
Interestingly, downward resonance frequency shifting is observed with
increasing side-gate voltage, which can be attributed to the capacitive
softening of spring constant. Furthermore, in-plane vibrational modes exhibit
much stronger spring softening effect than out-of-plan modes. Our dual-gate
design should enable the differentiation between these two types of vibrational
modes, and open up new possibility for nonlinear operation of nanotube
resonators.Comment: 12 pages/ 3 figure
