    A two component jet model for the X-ray afterglow flat segment in short GRB 051221A

    In the double neutron star merger or neutron star-black hole merger model for short GRBs, the outflow launched might be mildly magnetized and neutron rich. The magnetized neutron-rich outflow will be accelerated by the magnetic and thermal pressure and may form a two component jet finally, as suggested by Vlahakis, Peng & K\"{o}nigl (2003). We show in this work that such a two component jet model could well reproduce the multi-wavelength afterglow lightcurves, in particular the X-ray flat segment, of short GRB 051221A. In this model, the central engine need not to be active much longer than the prompt Ī³āˆ’\gamma-ray emission.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure; Accepted for publication by ApJ

    Magnetization distribution and orbital moment in the non-Superconducting Chalcogenide Compound K0.8Fe1.6Se2

    We have used polarized and unpolarized neutron diffraction to determine the spatial distribution of the magnetization density induced by a magnetic field of 9 T in the tetragonal phase of K0.8Fe1.6Se2. The maximum entropy reconstruction shows clearly that most of the magnetization is confined to the region around the iron atoms whereas there is no significant magnetization associated with either Se or K atoms. The distribution of magnetization around the Fe atom is slightly nonspherical with a shape which is extended along the [0 0 1] direction in the projection. Multipolar refinement results show that the electrons which give rise to the paramagnetic susceptibility are confined to the Fe atoms and their distribution suggests that they occupy 3d t2g-type orbitals with around 66% in those of xz/yz symmetry. Detail modeling of the magnetic form factor indicates the presence of an orbital moment to the total paramagnetic moment of Fe2+Comment: 7 pages, accepted for publication in Physical Review

    Memory based on abstraction for dynamic fitness functions

In this memory scheme, the memory does not store good solutions as themselves but as their abstraction, i.e., their approximate location in the search space. When the environment changes, the stored abstraction information is extracted to generate new individuals into the population. Experiments are carried out to validate the abstraction based memory scheme.     Attenuation of ischemic liver injury by prostaglandin E<inf>1</inf> analogue, misoprostol, and prostaglandin I<inf>2</inf> analogue, OP-41483

    Background: Prostaglandin has been reported to have protective effects against liver injury. Use of this agent in clinical settings, however, is limited because of drugrelated side effects. This study investigated whether misoprostol, prostaglandin E1 analogue, and OP-41483, prostaglandin I2 analogue, which have fewer adverse effects with a longer half-life, attenuate ischemic liver damage. Study Design: Thirty beagle dogs underwent 2 hours of hepatic vascular exclusion using venovenous bypass. Misoprostol was administered intravenously for 30 minutes before ischemia and for 3 hours after reperfusion. OP-41483 was administered intraportally for 30 minutes before ischemia (2 Ī¼g/kg/min) and for 3 hours after reperfusion (0.5 Ī¼g/kg/min). Animals were divided into five groups: untreated control group (n = 10); high-dose misoprostol (total 100 Ī¼g/kg) group (MP-H, n = 5); middle-dose misoprostol (50 Ī¼g/kg) group (MP-M, n = 5); low-dose misoprostol (25 Ī¼g/kg) group (MP-L, n = 5); and OP-41483 group (OP, n = 5). Animal survival, hepatic tissue blood flow (HTBF), liver function, and histology were analyzed. Results: Two-week animal survival rates were 30% in control, 60% in MP-H, 100% in MP-M, 80% in MP-L, and 100% in OP. The treatments with prostaglandin analogues improved HTBF, and attenuated liver enzyme release, adenine nucleotrides degradation, and histologic abnormalities. In contrast to the MP-H animals that exhibited unstable cardiovascular systems, the MP- M, MP-L, and OP animals experienced only transient hypotension. Conclusions: These results indicate that misoprostol and OP-41483 prevent ischemic liver damage, although careful dose adjustment of misoprostol is required to obtain the best protection with minimal side effects

    Technicolor Models with Color-Singlet Technifermions and their Ultraviolet Extensions

    We study technicolor models in which all of the technifermions are color-singlets, focusing on the case in these fermions transform according to the fundamental representation of the technicolor gauge group. Our analysis includes a derivation of restrictions on the weak hypercharge assignments for the technifermions and additional color-singlet, technisinglet fermions arising from the necessity of avoiding stable bound states with exotic electric charges. Precision electroweak constraints on these models are also discussed. We determine some general properties of extended technicolor theories containing these technicolor sectors.Comment: 17 pages, latex, 2 figure

    Structural and Physical Properties of CaFe4As3 Single Crystals

    We report the synthesis, and structural and physical properties of CaFe4As3 single crystals. Needle-like single crystals of CaFe4As3 were grown out of Sn flux and the compound adopts an orthorhombic structure as determined by X-ray diffraction measurements. Electrical, magnetic, and thermal properties indicate that the system undergoes two successive phase transitions occurring at TN1 ~ 90 K and TN2 ~ 26 K. At TN1, electrical resistivities (\rho(b) and \rho(ac)) are enhanced while magnetic susceptibilities (\chi(b) and \chi(ac)) are reduced in both directions parallel and perpendicular to the b-axis, consistent with the scenario of antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave formation. At TN2, specific heat reveals a slope change, and \chi(ac) decreases sharply but \chi(b) has a clear jump before it decreases again with decreasing temperature. Remarkably, both \rho(b) and \rho(ac) decrease sharply with thermal hysteresis, indicating the first-order nature of the phase transition at TN2. At low temperatures, \rho(b) and \rho(ac) can be described by {\rho} = {\rho}0 + AT^\alpha ({\rho}0, A, and {\alpha} are constants). Interestingly, these constants vary with applied magnetic field.
