Magnetotransport of coupled electron-holes

The carriers in InAs-GaSb double quantum wells are hybrid ``electron-holes''. We study the magnetotransport properties of such particles using a two-component Keldysh technique, which results in a semi-analytic expression for the small-field current. We show that zero temperature current can be large even when the Fermi energy lies within the hybridization gap, a result which cannot be understood within a semiclassical (Boltzmann) approach. Magnetic field dependence of the conductance is also affected significantly by the hybridization of electrons and holes.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

3D LiDAR Scanning of Urban Forest Structure Using a Consumer Tablet

Forest measurements using conventional methods may not capture all the important information required to properly characterize forest structure. The objective of this study was to develop a low-cost alternative method for forest inventory measurements and characterization of forest structure using handheld LiDAR technology. Three-dimensional (3D) maps of trees were obtained using an iPad Pro with a LiDAR sensor. Freely-available software programs, including 3D Forest Software and CloudCompare software, were used to determine tree diameter at breast height (DBH) and distance between trees. The 3D point cloud data obtained from the iPad Pro LiDAR sensor was able to estimate tree DBH accurately, with a residual error of 2.4 cm in an urban forest stand and 1.9 cm in an actively managed experimental forest stand. Distances between trees also were accurately estimated, with mean residual errors of 0.21 m for urban forest, and 0.38 m for managed forest stand. This study demonstrates that it is possible to use a low-cost consumer tablet with a LiDAR sensor to accurately measure certain forest attributes, which could enable the crowdsourcing of urban and other forest tree DBH and density data because of its integration into existing Apple devices and ease of use

Intricacies of the Co3+^{3+} spin state in Sr2_2Co0.5_{0.5}Ir0.5_{0.5}O4_4: an x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism study

We report on a combined soft x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) study at the Co-$L_{3,2}$ on the hybrid 3$d$/5$d$ solid state oxide Sr$_2$Co$_{0.5}$Ir$_{0.5}$O$_4$ with the K$_2$NiF$_4$ structure. Our data indicate unambiguously a pure high spin state $(S=2)$ for the Co$^{3+}$ (3$d^6$) ions with a significant unquenched orbital moment $L_z/2S_z=0.25$ despite the sizeable elongation of the CoO$_6$ octahedra. Using quantitative model calculations based on parameters consistent with our spectra, we have investigated the stability of this high spin state with respect to the competing low spin and intermediate spin states.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

Досвід підготовки кадрів для сектору безпеки та оборони провідних країн світу та шляхи його впровадження в Україні

The features and general characteristics of personnel training system for the defense and security sector of world leading countries have been determined. The best practices of training, retraining and advanced training system of personnel for special units of different countries that perform tasks of maintaining peace and order have been analyzed. The ways of implementing international experience into personnel training system of the relevant special services of Ukraine have been offered. The authors have made conclusions on the need to develop new rational and scientifically based organizational and nominal structure in the defense and security sector of Ukraine, to establish close cooperation with international organizations, whose activities are related to the personnel training for security and defense forces. Special attention has been paid to the main component of the personnel training system in defense and security sector of Ukraine – and its practical component, which is in bringing education to the actual conditions of service. The authors have determined the features of the personnel training system for security and defense forces of the most developed countries, where specialization, intensity and short-term training process are clearly expressed. It has been indicated that special attention during the personnel training for the sphere of national security in other countries is paid to foreign languages and other important subjects for the state’s safety in the field of international relations. Special attention has been focused on the need to use the advanced experience of foreign countries on the process of quality selection of personnel for security forces, as well as advanced training of special services officers. The authors have suggested to develop the National strategy of personnel provision of the defense sector of Ukraine.Розглянуто особливості системи підготовки кадрів для сектору безпеки та оборони провідних країн світу, визначено певні загальні риси цієї системи. На підставі аналізу особливостей підготовки кадрів для сектору безпеки та оборони у різних країнах запропоновано шляхи впровадження зарубіжного досвіду в систему підготовки кадрів відповідних спецслужб України

The basic ways of improving motivation for the use of distance learning technologies in higher educational establishments within the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine have been formulated. The main place was provided to the relevant preparatory and explanatory work concerning the advantages and perspectives of distance learning, which is realized by the state education authorities, schools, higher educational establishments within the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and even by the entire system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. It is also pointed on the need to create appropriate conditions that can support the autonomy of an individual, to stimulate interest in learning. It is noted that at this stage the leading role plays a higher educational establishment, namely its professors. The author has defined the basic steps that should applied by a professor of higher educational establishment within the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine to increase the motivation to use distance learning technologies.
