Constructing Sobol' sequences with better two-dimensional projections

    Get PDF
Direction numbers for generating Sobol' sequences that satisfy the so-called Property A in up to 1111 dimensions have previously been given in Joe and Kuo [ACM Trans. Math. Software, 29 (2003), pp. 49–57]. However, these Sobol' sequences may have poor two-dimensional projections. Here we provide a new set of direction numbers alleviating this problem. These are obtained by treating Sobol' sequences in d dimensions as (t, d)-sequences and then optimizing the t-values of the two-dimensional projections. Our target dimension is 21201

Component-by-component construction of good intermediate-rank lattice rules

It is known that the generating vector of a rank-1 lattice rule can be constructed component-by-component to achieve strong tractability error bounds in both weighted Korobov spaces and weighted Sobolev spaces. Since the weights for these spaces are nonincreasing, the first few variables are in a sense more important than the rest. We thus propose to copy the points of a rank-1 lattice rule a number of times in the first few dimensions to yield an intermediate-rank lattice rule. We show that the generating vector (and in weighted Sobolev spaces, the shift also) of an intermediate-rank lattice rule can also be constructed component-by-component to achieve strong tractability error bounds. In certain circumstances, these bounds are better than the corresponding bounds for rank-1 lattice rules

The Forecasting Capacity of Housing Price Expectations

    Get PDF
This study captures the essential elements of the price expectations of market participants in a rising market. Adopting a forward-looking approach, this paper explores the effectiveness of expectations as an indicator of forthcoming housing price changes in Hong Kong. Examination of the quarterly survey data from December 2003 to September 2007 indicates that both homeowners and non-homeowners tend to overestimate the probability of future housing price increases yet underestimate its volatility. This adds weight to the argument that market participants are generally not rational in the prediction of price movement. Homeowners, investors and potential home buyers have more or less the same level of confidence about the future market outlook. Like non-owners, they expect higher prices. The number of correct forecasts exceeds incorrect forecasts, suggesting that overall price expectations are fairly close to realization. It can be broadly concluded that the aggregate price expectations in the long run can be an appropriate forecasting tool for future market performance.Price expectations; Forecastability; Housing market; Hong Kong

Hybrid copula mixed models for combining case-control and cohort studies in meta-analysis of diagnostic tests

    Get PDF
Copula mixed models for trivariate (or bivariate) meta-analysis of diagnostic test accuracy studies accounting (or not) for disease prevalence have been proposed in the biostatistics literature to synthesize information. However, many systematic reviews often include case-control and cohort studies, so one can either focus on the bivariate meta-analysis of the case-control studies or the trivariate meta-analysis of the cohort studies, as only the latter contains information on disease prevalence. In order to remedy this situation of wasting data we propose a hybrid copula mixed model via a combination of the bivariate and trivariate copula mixed model for the data from the case-control studies and cohort studies, respectively. Hence, this hybrid model can account for study design and also due to its generality can deal with dependence in the joint tails. We apply the proposed hybrid copula mixed model to a review of the performance of contemporary diagnostic imaging modalities for detecting metastases in patients with melanoma

Mapping the magneto-structural quantum phases of Mn3O4

We present temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction and temperature- and field-dependent Raman scattering studies of single crystal Mn3O4, which reveal the novel magnetostructural phases that evolve in the spinels due to the interplay between strong spin-orbital coupling, geometric frustration, and applied magnetic field. We observe a structural transition from tetragonal to monoclinic structures at the commensurate magnetic transition at T2=33K, show that the onset and nature of this structural transition can be controlled with an applied magnetic field, and find evidence for a field-tuned quantum phase transition to a tetragonal incommensurate or spin glass phase.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Model building by coset space dimensional reduction in ten-dimensions with direct product gauge symmetry

    Get PDF
We investigate ten-dimensional gauge theories whose extra six-dimensional space is a compact coset space, S/RS/R, and gauge group is a direct product of two Lie groups. We list up candidates of the gauge group and embeddings of RR into them. After dimensional reduction of the coset space,we find fermion and scalar representations of GGUT×U(1)G_{\mathrm{GUT}} \times U(1) with GGUT=SU(5),SO(10)G_{\mathrm{GUT}}=SU(5), SO(10) and E6E_6 which accomodate all of the standard model particles. We also discuss possibilities to generate distinct Yukawa couplings among the generations using representations with a different dimension for GGUT=SO(10)G_{\mathrm{GUT}}=SO(10) and E6E_6 models.Comment: 14 pages; added local report number, added refferenc

The unusual landings of Juveniles of Decapterus russelli and Rastrelliger kanagurta in trawl catches of Veraval

    Get PDF
Caputre of fish Juveniles in trawl nets is a common and regular phenomenon ever since the cod end mesh size has been reduced to less than 10 mm. Generally the cod-end catches are a mixture of juveniles of several species of finflshes and shellfishes, along with a host of inedible benthic biota. The occurance of a single species in significantly large quantities is seldom found or reported
