Onchocerciasis transmission in Ghana: Persistence under different control strategies and the role of the simuliid vectors
Background:
The World Health Organization (WHO) aims at eliminating onchocerciasis by 2020 in selected African countries. Current control focuses on community-directed treatment with ivermectin (CDTI). In Ghana, persistent transmission has been reported despite long-term control. We present spatial and temporal patterns of onchocerciasis transmission in relation to ivermectin treatment history.
Methodology/Principal Findings:
Host-seeking and ovipositing blackflies were collected from seven villages in four regions of Ghana with 3â24 years of CDTI at the time of sampling. A total of 16,443 flies was analysed for infection; 5,812 (35.3%) were dissected for parity (26.9% parous). Heads and thoraces of 12,196 flies were dissected for Onchocerca spp. and DNA from 11,122 abdomens was amplified using Onchocerca primers. A total of 463 larvae (0.03 larvae/fly) from 97 (0.6%) infected and 62 (0.4%) infective flies was recorded; 258 abdomens (2.3%) were positive for Onchocerca DNA. Infections (all were O. volvulus) were more likely to be detected in ovipositing flies. Transmission occurred, mostly in the wet season, at Gyankobaa and Bosomase, with transmission potentials of, respectively, 86 and 422 L3/person/month after 3 and 6 years of CDTI. The numbers of L3/1,000 parous flies at these villages were over 100times the WHO threshold of one L3/1,000 for transmission control. Vector species influenced transmission parameters. At Asubende, the number of L3/1,000 ovipositing flies (1.4, 95% CI = 0â4) also just exceeded the threshold despite extensive vector control and 24 years of ivermectin distribution, but there were no infective larvae in host-seeking flies.
Conclusions/Significance:
Despite repeated ivermectin treatment, evidence of O. volvulus transmission was documented in all seven villages and above the WHO threshold in two. Vector species influences transmission through biting and parous rates and vector competence, and should be included in transmission models. Oviposition traps could augment vector collector methods for monitoring and surveillance
Bats in the anthropogenic matrix: Challenges and opportunities for the conservation of chiroptera and their ecosystem services in agricultural landscapes
Intensification in land-use and farming practices has had largely negative effects on bats, leading to population declines and concomitant losses of ecosystem services. Current trends in land-use change suggest that agricultural areas will further expand, while production systems may either experience further intensification
(particularly in developing nations) or become more environmentally friendly (especially in Europe). In this chapter, we review the existing literature on how agricultural management affects the bat assemblages and the behavior of individual bat species, as well as the literature on provision of ecosystem services by bats (pest insect suppression and pollination) in agricultural systems. Bats show highly variable responses to habitat conversion, with no significant change in species
richness or measures of activity or abundance. In contrast, intensification within agricultural systems (i.e., increased agrochemical inputs, reduction of natural structuring elements such as hedges, woods, and marshes) had more consistently negative
effects on abundance and species richness. Agroforestry systems appear to mitigate negative consequences of habitat conversion and intensification, often having higher abundances and activity levels than natural areas. Across biomes, bats play key roles in limiting populations of arthropods by consuming various agricultural pests. In tropical areas, bats are key pollinators of several commercial fruit species. However, these substantial benefits may go unrecognized by farmers, who sometimes associate bats with ecosystem disservices such as crop raiding. Given the importance of bats for global food production, future agricultural management should focus on âwildlife-friendlyâ farming practices that allow more bats to exploit and persist
in the anthropogenic matrix so as to enhance provision of ecosystem services. Pressing research topics include (1) a better understanding of how local-level versus
landscape-level management practices interact to structure bat assemblages,
(2) the effects of new pesticide classes and GM crops on bat populations, and (3) how increased documentation and valuation of the ecosystem services provided by bats could improve attitudes of producers toward their conservation

Efficient routes towards a series of 5,5'-bithiazolidinylidenes as Ï-electron acceptors
International audienceDifferent approaches have been studied in order to prepare efficiently the sulfur rich electron acceptor, DEBTTT. Among the various routes used, the one going through the synthesis of a bicyclic derivative, where the thiazole-2-chalcogenone is fused with a 1,3-dithiole-2-one, leads to the target molecule under milder conditions and better yield. Thus, this approach has been explored for the synthesis of a series of acceptors either by modifying the substituent on the thiazole core or by changing the exocyclic chalcogen atoms. All these sulfur rich electron acceptors exhibit short intra- and intermolecular SS contacts in the solid state. Electrochemical investigations show that the nature of the exocyclic chalcogen atom of the thiazole ring has a significant influence on the accepting ability as a cathodic shift of about 220 mV is observed just by changing sulfur for oxygen. This structural modification enables the tuning of the redox properties
Experimental and theoretical investigations of magnetic anisotropy and magnetic hardening at molecule/ferromagnet interfaces
International audienceWe measure by means of in situ magneto-optical Kerr effect the magnetism of ultrathin magnetic films supported on gold and platinum during the capping with molecular layers. We observe both for C 60 and Alq 3 molecules deposited on Co films an enhancement of the out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy, leading to a magnetic hardening for out-of-plane magnetization. Surprisingly, the amplitude of this hardening depends strongly on the underlying substrate. While we find an increase of the coercive field around 100% for Co/Au(111), it can reach almost 600% on Co/Pt(111). Those results are discussed by using both tight-binding and ab initio calculations. It is shown on the case of C 60 that both the adsorption geometry and the strain in the magnetic layer can be key ingredients to predict the quantitative change of magnetic anisotropy induced by the interface between a magnetic material and a molecular layer. On the contrary, the crystalline stacking of the Co has a minor influence
