    Does Sukuk market development promote economic growth?

    Purpose: This paper aims to explain the relationship between sukuk market and economic growth. In this context, the study investigates the impact of sukuk market development on economic growth for nine countries (Brunei, Indonesia, Jordan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey) which have Islamic finance and banking system. Design/methodology/approach: The study analyzed the data of nine countries as Brunei, Indonesia, Jordan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey for periods between 2014Q1 and 2017Q4. As a part of gross domestic product, total sukuk export measured by the sukuk market and the sukuk density which was considered as annual sukuk export per country were used to determine sukuk market development. Inflation, trade deficit and financial stress series were used as control variables. Findings: It was determined that there was a long-term cointegrated relationship between sukuk market development and economic growth. Sukuk volume and sukuk density had a positive effect on growth in the long run. One unit increase in sukuk volume increased growth by 0.5%, while increase in sukuk density increased growth by 1.7%. According to short-term relationships, it was seen that sukuk variables did not have an effect on growth. However, sukuk exports contributed positively to growth rates in the long run. Research limitations/implications: The findings of this study are limited with nine countries (Brunei, Indonesia, Jordan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey). Also, the accessible data of sukuk market was used and the periods of 2014Q1–2017Q4 was analyzed in a study. Accordingly, future studies can find different results for different countries which has Islamic finance and banking system for different periods in the global market. Yapısal tanılama, operasyon ve çevre yükleri altında elde edilen veriler ışığında mevcut yapıları daha iyi temsil eden modeller geliştirme alanıdır. Bu modeller, başlangıç bir sayısal modeli ile deneysel veriler arasındaki farkın minimize edilerek belirsiz model parametrelerinin tahmini ile elde edilmektedir. Problemin çıktılarından model parametrelerinin tahmini mekanikte ters problem olarak bilinmekte ve çözümü optimizasyon algoritmaları ile mümkün olmaktadır. Ayrıca, yapılardan elde edilen ve mevcut durum hakkında bilgi içeren her türlü dinamik ve statik veri belirli şartlar altında yerel hasarın yerinin ve şiddetinin tespiti için de kullanılabilmektedir. Bu noktada taşıyıcı elemanlardaki hasar, farklı hasar modelleri ile temsil edilebilir. Elde edilen sonuçların kesinliği ve doğruluğu hasar modeliyle doğrudan alakalıdır. Bundan dolayı bu çalışmada basit bir yapı sistemi için farklı hasar modellerinin hasar tespitindeki performansı, modellemedeki belirsizlikler göz önüne alınarak araştırılmıştır. Belirsizlik modellemesi ve analizinde bulanık sayılar ve bulanık aritmetik yöntemleri kullanılmıştır. Hasar modellerine ait parametreler ve yapı çıktılarındaki (doğal frekanslar, mod şekilleri v.b.) belirsizlikler bulanık sayılar ile modellenerek nicel belirsizlik miktarları elde edilmiştir. Hasar modellerinden elde edilen belirsizlik miktarları modelin, mevcut yapıdaki durumu belirli bir güvenilirlik seviyesinde yansıtması açısından önemlidir. Bu çalışma karmaşık hasar modellerinin hasar tespitindeki performansı incelendiği sonuçlar, düzgün yerel rijitlik azalması ve ayrık yay modelleri gibi basit modeller ile hasarın yerinin ve şiddetinin yeterli yakınsaklıkla tespit edilebileceğini göstermiştir. Karmaşık ve detaylı matematik modellerin davranışı daha iyi temsil etmesine rağmen bu durum genellikle belirli yükleme şartları veya çevre etkileri için geçerli olmaktadır. Bundan dolayı daha basit stokastik modeller ve deneysel veriler yardımıyla mevcut hasar durumunun tespiti daha makul olmaktadır.Structural identification and damage detection using structural health monitoring data has gained considerable attention in the last two decades. The models improved using in-situ measurements are very useful to predict the current damage condition of the structures. Many different damage models might be used to model the crack type damage in structural components. However the models which do not come up with additional computational burden are preferable since the structural damage detection is an inverse problem which is a computationally expensive method. In this study, three crack models for beam type elements are compared in terms of the modeling uncertainty amounts. The modeling uncertainties are quantified by the so-called Fuzzy Finite Element Model Updating method. In this method, uncertainties in both updating model parameters and the response quantities are modeled by means of fuzzy numbers. The natural frequencies and the mode shapes obtained from the simulated damaged cantilever beam are used in the updating process. The results shows that the uniform degradation of the flexural rigidity model which is the simplest damage model can effectively be used to model the damage in beam elements. Despite the fact that the fracture mechanic approach and the Christides and Barr models are more accurate but computationally expensive, they do not provide results which do not considerably differ from the results obtained by the use of uniform degradation model. Hence, it can be said that the uniform degradation of the flexural rigidity model might be preferred for modeling the damage in damage detection applications using structural health monitoring data

    Opinions of Secondary School Students on the Use of Mobile Augmented Reality Technology in Science Teaching

    Mobile augmented reality (MAR) draws attention in terms of providing a flexible learning process and environment. It is thought that learning environments can be more effective using MAR technology. The research aimed to determine the secondary school students' views on the use of MAR technology in science teaching. The research was conducted with 143 students studying in the sixth grade at two different secondary schools in Turkey. In the research, convergent parallel patterns from mixed-method patterns were used. For eight weeks, the research was carried out to cover the systems unit in our body, situated in the 6th-grade science course curriculum. During the process, the Anatomy 4D application was used in the experimental group during the procedure, and the science course curriculum was used in the control group.  In this paper, a part of the mixed research, the qualitative data collected from the experimental group's semi-structured interview form and diaries were analyzed. Descriptive analysis was used to analyze the data. As a result of the research, although the students do not have a clear idea about AR and MAR technologies at the beginning of the application, it is observed that their thoughts change over time, and MAR applications are effective on the success of the course

    The influence of vitamin D deficiency on eradication rates of Helicobacter pylori

    Background. Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy improves the healing of various gastro-duodenal diseases such as chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer, and also reduces gastric cancer incidence. Several studies have reported on risk factors other than antibiotic resistance related to Helicobacter pylori eradication failure. Objectives. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether or not the serum levels of 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25(OH)D) influence eradication rates of H. pylori. Material and methods. 220 patients diagnosed with H. pylori gastritis using endoscopic biopsy had their 25-OH vitamin D levels measured via the electrochemiluminescence method before beginning eradication therapy of H. pylori. Gastric biopsies obtained at endoscopy were examined for H. pylori strains and histopathologic findings. All patients were treated with bismuth-containing quadruple therapy for 14 days. H. pylori eradication was determined via the 14C-urea breath test performed 4 weeks after the end of therapy. Based on the 25-OH vitamin D levels, the patients were divided into 2 groups: group 1 (deficient) had a vitamin D level of = 10 ng/mL. Results. Eradication was successful in 170 (77.2%) patients and failed in 50 (22.7%) patients. The prevalence of 25(OH)D deficiency was 30.5%. Mean 25(OH)D levels were significantly lower in the eradication failure group compared to the successful treatment group (9.13 +/- 4.7 vs 19.03 +/- 8.13; p = 0.001). There were significantly more patients with deficient 25(OH)D levels in the failed treatment group compared to the successful treatment group (p = 0.001). Conclusions. Our findings suggest that 25-OH vitamin D deficiency may be considered a risk factor related to eradication failure of H. pylori, which may lead to a need for supplementation of vitamin D before eradication of H. pylori

    COVID-19 in pediatric nephrology centers in Turkey

    Background/aim: There is limited data on COVID-19 disease in children with kidney disease. We aimed to investigate the characteristics and prognosis of COVID-19 in pediatric nephrology patients in Turkey. Materials and methods: This was a national, multicenter, retrospective cohort study based on an online survey evaluating the data between 11th March 2020 and 11th March 2021 as an initial step of a detailed pediatric nephrology COVID-19 registry. Results: Two hundred and three patients (89 girls and 114 boys) were diagnosed with COVID-19. One-third of these patients (36.9%) were between 10–15 years old. Half of the patients were on kidney replacement therapy: kidney transplant (KTx) recipients (n = 56, 27.5%), patients receiving chronic hemodialysis (n = 33, 16.3%) and those on peritoneal dialysis (PD) (n = 18, 8.9%). Fifty-four (26.6%) children were asymptomatic. Eighty-two (40.3%) patients were hospitalized and 23 (28%) needed intensive care unit admission. Fifty-five percent of the patients were not treated, while the remaining was given favipiravir (20.7%), steroid (16.3%), and hydroxychloroquine (11.3%). Acute kidney injury developed in 19.5% of hospitalized patients. Five (2.4%) had MIS-C. Eighty-three percent of the patients were discharged without any apparent sequelae, while 7 (3.4%) died. One hundred and eight health care staff were infected during the study period. Conclusion: COVID-19 was most commonly seen in patients who underwent KTx and received HD. The combined immunosuppressive therapy and frequent exposure to the hospital setting may increase these patients’ susceptibility. Staff infections before vaccination era were alarming, various precautions should be taken for infection control, particularly optimal vaccination coverage

    The Effets Of Squash Of Poppy Paste On The Quality Of Bread

    In this study the breads containing %15 and %20 of squashof poppy paste were analyzed for their protein,fat,ash,water, acrylamide, HMF contents, colour and texture. As a result, the squash of poppy paste proxide increase in the protein, fat, dry matter, ash contents. As the poppy paste content increased, the hardness and springness values were increased. The colour of the bread crust became darker and its redness value was increased by increase in the poppy paste content. Moreover, acrylamide was not observed in the breads containing opium poppy. Poppy paste caused increase in the HMF content. As a result of sensory analysis,it was observed that the panelist prefered the breads with poppy paste compared to control.Bu çalışmada, %15 ve %20 oranında haşhaş ezmesi katılan ekmeklerin protein oranı, yağ oranı, kül miktarı, nem miktarı, kuru madde miktarı, akrilamid miktarı, HMF miktarı, renk değeri ve tekstür yönünden ekmeğin kalitesi üzerine etkileri incelenmiştir. Haşhaş ezmesi katkısının ekmekte protein oranı, yağ oranı, kuru madde miktarı, kül miktarını artırdığı belirlenmiştir. Haşhaş oranındaki artışa paralel olarak esneklik azalmış ve sertlik oranı artmıştır. İkame edilen haşhaş oranı arttıkça kabuk rengi koyulaşmış ve kırmızılık değeri artmıştır. Bunların dışında haşhaş ezmesinin ekmekte HMF ve Akrilamid oluşumu üzerine etkileri de incelenmiştir. Haşhaş ezmesi katkılı ekmeklerde Akrilamid tespit edilemezken, haşhaş ezmesinin ekmekte HMF oluşumunu azda olsa arttırdığı tespit edilmiştir. Duyusal analiz sonuçları değerlendirildiğinde ilave edilen haşhaş oranı arttıkça genel beğeninin arttığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır

    Bu çalışma BAP tarafından 2015EĞBE006 nolu Yüksek Lisans tez projesi olarak desteklenmiştir.Bu çalışmanın amacı, Ortaokul Fen Bilimleri dersi 6.sınıf ‘Fiziksel ve Kimyasal Değişmeler’ konusunda “Tahmin-Gözlem-Açıklama” (TGA) stratejisine dayalı olarak hazırlanan etkinliklerin, öğrencilerin akademik başarılarına ve öğrenmenin kalıcılığına olan etkisini araştırmaktır. Çalışmanın örneklemini, 2015-2016 eğitim-öğretim yılının güz döneminde, İzmir ili Buca ilçesine bağlı bir devlet okulunda 6. sınıfta öğrenim gören toplam 57 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Çalışmada öntest-sontest kontrol gruplu yarı deneysel desen kullanılmıştır. Veri toplama aracı olarak öntest, sontest ve kalıcılık testi kullanılmıştır. Ayrıca elde edilen sonuçları desteklemek ve verileri çeşitlendirmek amacıyla yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme tekniği kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen veriler SPSS paket programıyla analiz edilmiş ve bulgular ortaya koyulmuştur. Araştırmadan elde edilen verilerin analizleri sonucu, TGA stratejisine dayalı hazırlanan etkinliklerin, öğrencilerin akademik başarılarına ve kalıcılığa etkisinin anlamlı olduğunu göstermiştir. Yarı Yapılandırılmış görüşme sonuçları ise öğrencilerin TGA stratejisine dayalı olarak yapılan etkinliklere olumlu baktıklarını ortaya koymuştur.The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of the activities based on the strategy of prediction-observation-explanation (POE) in the subject of physical and chemical changes in 6th grade science lesson on academic achievements of students and persistence of learning. The sample of the study consists of 57 students from 6th grade in a public school in Buca, İzmir in fall semester of 2015-2016 academic year. In the study, pretest-posttest control grouped quasi-experimental design was used. Pretest, posttest and persistency test were used as data collection tool. Semi-structured interviews also supported the results and diversified the data. The data obtained were analyzed by SPSS and findings were presented. The results of data analysis showed that the effects of the activities based on POE strategy were significant for academic achievements of the students and persistency. The results of semi-structured interviews also revealed that the students found the activities with POE strategy positive
