    Acoustic transmission enhancement through a periodically-structured stiff plate without any opening

    We report both experimentally and theoretically that the enhanced acoustic transmission can occur in the subwavelength region through a thin but stiff structured-plate without any opening. This exotic acoustic phenomenon is essentially distinct from the previous related studies originated from, either collectively or individually, the interaction of the incident wave with openings in previous structures. It is attributed to the structure-induced resonant excitation of the non-leaky Lamb modes that exist intrinsically in the uniform elastic plate. Our finding should have impact on ultrasonic applications.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

    PurposeTo evaluate whether postoperative circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in plasma of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) can be used as a biomarker for early detection of molecular residual disease (MRD) and prediction of postoperative recurrence.MethodsThis study subjects were evaluated patients with surgical resected non-small cell lung cancer. All eligible patients underwent radical surgery operation followed by adjuvant therapy. Tumor tissue samples collected during operation were used to detect tumor mutation genes, and blood samples collected from peripheral veins after operation were used to collect ctDNA. Molecular residue disease (MRD) positive was defined as at least 1 true shared mutation identified in both the tumor sample and a plasma sample from the same patient was.ResultsPositive postoperatively ctDNA was associated with lower recurrence-free survival (RFS).The presence of MRD was a strong predictor of disease recurrence. The relative contribution of ctDNA-based MRD to the prediction of RFS is higher than all other clinicopathological variables, even higher than traditional TNM staging. In addition, MRD-positive patients who received adjuvant therapy had improved RFS compared to those who did not, the RFS of MRD-negative patients receiving adjuvant therapy was lower than that of patients not receiving adjuvant therapy.ConclusionsPost-operative ctDNA analysis is an effective method for recurrence risk stratification of NSCLC, which is beneficial to the management of patients with NSCLC

    Absence of Appl2 sensitizes endotoxin shock through activation of PI3K/Akt pathway

    BACKGROUND: The adapter proteins Appl1 (adaptor protein containing pleckstrin homology domain, phosphotyrosine domain, and leucine zipper motif 1) and Appl2 are highly homologous and involved in several signaling pathways. While previous studies have shown that Appl1 plays a pivotal role in adiponectin signaling and insulin secretion, the physiological functions of Appl2 are largely unknown. RESULTS: In the present study, the role of Appl2 in sepsis shock was investigated by using Appl2 knockout (KO) mice. When challenged with lipopolysaccharides (LPS), Appl2 KO mice exhibited more severe symptoms of endotoxin shock, accompanied by increased production of proinflammatory cytokines. In comparison with the wild-type control, deletion of Appl2 led to higher levels of TNF-α and IL-1β in primary macrophages. In addition, phosphorylation of Akt and its downstream effector NF-κB was significantly enhanced. By co-immunoprecipitation, we found that Appl2 and Appl1 interacted with each other and formed a complex with PI3K regulatory subunit p85α, which is an upstream regulator of Akt. Consistent with these results, deletion of Appl1 in macrophages exhibited characteristics of reduced Akt activation and decreased the production of TNFα and IL-1β when challenged by LPS. CONCLUSIONS: Results of the present study demonstrated that Appl2 is a critical negative regulator of innate immune response via inhibition of PI3K/Akt/NF-κB signaling pathway by forming a complex with Appl1 and PI3K.published_or_final_versio

    Photometric Variability in the CSTAR Field: Results From the 2008 Data Set

    The Chinese Small Telescope ARray (CSTAR) is the first telescope facility built at Dome A, Antarctica. During the 2008 observing season, the installation provided long-baseline and high-cadence photometric observations in the i-band for 18,145 targets within 20 deg2 CSTAR field around the South Celestial Pole for the purpose of monitoring the astronomical observing quality of Dome A and detecting various types of photometric variability. Using sensitive and robust detection methods, we discover 274 potential variables from this data set, 83 of which are new discoveries. We characterize most of them, providing the periods, amplitudes and classes of variability.     Enhancement of Canonical Wnt/β-Catenin Signaling Activity by HCV Core Protein Promotes Cell Growth of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells

    BACKGROUND: The Hepatitis C virus (HCV) core protein has been implicated as a potential oncogene or a cofactor in HCV-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but the underlying mechanisms are unknown. Overactivation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling is a major factor in oncogenesis of HCC. However, the pathogenesis of HCV core-associated Wnt/β-catenin activation remains to be further characterized. Therefore, we attempted to determine whether HCV core protein plays an important role in regulating Wnt/β-catenin signaling in HCC cells. METHODOLOGY: Wnt/β-catenin signaling activity was investigated in core-expressing hepatoma cells. Protein and gene expression were examined by Western blot, immunofluorescence staining, RT-qPCR, and reporter assay. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: HCV core protein significantly enhances Tcf-dependent transcriptional activity induced by Wnt3A in HCC cell lines. Additionally, core protein increases and stabilizes β-catenin levels in hepatoma cell line Huh7 through inactivation of GSK-3β, which contributes to the up-regulation of downstream target genes, such as c-Myc, cyclin D1, WISP2 and CTGF. Also, core protein increases cell proliferation rate and promotes Wnt3A-induced tumor growth in the xenograft tumor model of human HCC. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: HCV core protein enhances Wnt/β-catenin signaling activity, hence playing an important role in HCV-associated carcinogenesis

    Descope of the ALIA mission

    The present work reports on a feasibility study commissioned by the Chinese Academy of Sciences of China to explore various possible mission options to detect gravitational waves in space alternative to that of the eLISA/LISA mission concept. Based on the relative merits assigned to science and technological viability, a few representative mission options descoped from the ALIA mission are considered. A semi-analytic Monte Carlo simulation is carried out to understand the cosmic black hole merger histories starting from intermediate mass black holes at high redshift as well as the possible scientific merits of the mission options considered in probing the light seed black holes and their coevolution with galaxies in early Universe. The study indicates that, by choosing the armlength of the interferometer to be three million kilometers and shifting the sensitivity floor to around one-hundredth Hz, together with a very moderate improvement on the position noise budget, there are certain mission options capable of exploring light seed, intermediate mass black hole binaries at high redshift that are not readily accessible to eLISA/LISA, and yet the technological requirements seem to within reach in the next few decades for China
