    IK-FA, a new heuristic inverse kinematics solver using firefly algorithm

    In this paper, a heuristic method based on Firefly Algorithm is proposed for inverse kinematics problems in articulated robotics. The proposal is called, IK-FA. Solving inverse kinematics, IK, consists in finding a set of joint-positions allowing a specific point of the system to achieve a target position. In IK-FA, the Fireflies positions are assumed to be a possible solution for joints elementary motions. For a robotic system with a known forward kinematic model, IK-Fireflies, is used to generate iteratively a set of joint motions, then the forward kinematic model of the system is used to compute the relative Cartesian positions of a specific end-segment, and to compare it to the needed target position. This is a heuristic approach for solving inverse kinematics without computing the inverse model. IK-FA tends to minimize the distance to a target position, the fitness function could be established as the distance between the obtained forward positions and the desired one, it is subject to minimization. In this paper IK-FA is tested over a 3 links articulated planar system, the evaluation is based on statistical analysis of the convergence and the solution quality for 100 tests. The impact of key FA parameters is also investigated with a focus on the impact of the number of fireflies, the impact of the maximum iteration number and also the impact of (a, ß, ¿, d) parameters. For a given set of valuable parameters, the heuristic converges to a static fitness value within a fix maximum number of iterations. IK-FA has a fair convergence time, for the tested configuration, the average was about 2.3394 × 10-3 seconds with a position error fitness around 3.116 × 10-8 for 100 tests. The algorithm showed also evidence of robustness over the target position, since for all conducted tests with a random target position IK-FA achieved a solution with a position error lower or equal to 5.4722 × 10-9.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Hybrid of swarm intelligent algorithms in medical applications

    In this paper, we designed a hybrid of swarm intelligence algorithms to diagnose hepatitis, breast tissue, and dermatology conditions in patients with such infection. The effectiveness of hybrid swarm intelligent algorithms was studied since no single algorithm is effective in solving all types of problems. In this study, feed forward and Elman recurrent neural network (ERN) with swarm intelligent algorithms is used for the classification of the mentioned diseases. The capabilities of six (6) global optimization learning algorithms were studied and their performances in training as well as testing were compared. These algorithms include: hybrid of Cuckoo Search algorithm and Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) (CSLM), Cuckoo Search algorithm (CS) and backpropagation (BP) (CSBP), CS and ERN (CSERN), Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) and LM (ABCLM), ABC and BP (ABCBP), Genetic Algorithm (GA) and BP (GANN). Simulation comparative results indicated that the classification accuracy and run time of the CSLM outperform the CSERN, GANN, ABCBP, ABCLM, and CSBP in the breast tissue dataset.     The epidemic of sexually transmitted infections in China: implications for control and future perspectives

    China has experienced an increasing epidemic of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV. High risk groups likely to be infected include female sex workers (FSWs) and their clients, men who have sex with men (MSM), drug users and migrant workers. Prevention can be achieved through education of the population, condom promotion, early detection of symptomatic and asymptomatic people, and effective diagnosis and treatment of these patients and their partners. This article aims to describe the profile of the epidemic in high-risk groups in China as well as to detail the contributing factors and the implications for control. Programmes for the control of STIs should be immediate priorities in China, and primary and secondary prevention strategies are vital to this process

    Investigation of Ti/Au Transition-Edge Sensors for Single-Photon Detection

    Transition-edge sensors (TES) are remarkable superconducting devices for a wide range of radiation detection with the ability of both energy resolution and counting photons. For the detection of single photons at telecom wavelength, optical Ti/Au bilayer TESs are fabricated and characterized. The superconducting transition temperature (T-c) of the Ti/Au films is effectively tuned from 162 to 72 mK by increasing the relative thickness ratio between the Au and Ti layer. The sensitive area is 20 mu m x 20 mu m, on which an SiO2/SiNx antireflection structure is coated by an ICP-PECVD process. The TES device shows an energy resolution of 0.19 eV and can discriminate up to 36 incident photons, with an effective time constant around 107 mu s at 95 mK

    Probing the Interplay between Quantum Charge Fluctuations and Magnetic Ordering in LuFe2O4

    Ferroelectric and ferromagnetic materials possess spontaneous electric and magnetic order, respectively, which can be switched by the corresponding applied electric and magnetic fields. Multiferroics combine these properties in a single material, providing an avenue for controlling electric polarization with a magnetic field and magnetism with an electric field. These materials have been intensively studied in recent years, both for their fundamental scientific interest as well as their potential applications in a broad range of magnetoelectric devices [1, 2, 3, 4]. However, the microscopic origins of magnetism and ferroelectricity are quite different, and the mechanisms producing strong coupling between them are not always well understood. Hence, gaining a deeper understanding of magnetoelectric coupling in these materials is the key to their rational design. Here, we use ultrafast optical spectroscopy to show that quantum charge fluctuations can govern the interplay between electric polarization and magnetic ordering in the charge-ordered multiferroic LuFe2O4

    Herpes simplex virus infections among rural residents in eastern China

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Herpes simplex virus (HSV) has two types: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both infect epithelial cells and establish latent infections in neurons causing an infection that persists for life. Information on age- and gender-specific seroprevalence of HSV-1 and HSV-2 is valuable for understanding HSV transmission dynamics and designing population-based prevention and intervention programs for HSV. However, such information is not available for China.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Cryopreserved serum samples of all subjects aged 5 to 60 years from two randomly selected rural villages in Zhejiang province in Eastern China who had participated in the China national seroepidemiological survey of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection conducted in 2006 were tested. Seroprevalence of HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections were determined by type-specific IgG antibody tests using an ELISA technique. Their 95% confidence intervals adjusted for the sampling fraction were calculated according to the Clopper-Pearson method.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 2,141 residents participated in the survey, with a response rate of 82.3%. HSV-1 seroprevalence was 92.0% overall, 89.1% for males and 94.2% for females. HSV-1 seroprevalence was 61.6% among children aged 5-9 years, 90.3% among 25-29 years, and nearly 100% among those aged > = 40 years. HSV-2 seroprevalence was 13.2% overall, 10.5% for males and 15.3% for females. No children aged 5-14 years were HSV-2 positive, and HSV-2 seroprevalence was 7.1% among 15-19 years and peaked at 24.3% among those aged 45-49 years. Neither HSV-1 nor HSV-2 infections were significantly different by gender. About 11.8% of study subjects were co-infected with both types of HSV. Among 549 participating couples, 8.6% were HSV-1 serodiscordant and 11.8% were HSV-2 serodiscordant. No one tested positive for HIV. The overall prevalence of HBsAg was 16.2%, 16.9% for males and 15.4% for females.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>HSV-1 was highly prevalent among all rural residents aged between 5-60 years in Eastern China, whereas HSV-2 was prevalent among sexually active people. HSV-1 and HSV-2 have different transmission modes and dynamics. Future HSV prevention and control programs in China should be type specific.</p
