    A Comparative Study on Projecting Verbs in News and Novels from Interpersonal View

    Abstract: Projection is a type of language phenomenon that does not function as a direct representation of non-linguistic experience but as representation of a linguistic representation. Projection consists of projecting source, projecting words, and the projected clause and the projecting words include projecting verbs, projecting nouns, projecting prepositions and projecting adjuncts, among which projecting verbs are used the most frequently. According to Chinese scholar Zenglei, we can not only judge whether the projection is about mental process or is about verbal process but also know author’s attitude or interpersonal meaning conveyed by the author from projecting verbs. Therefore, this study investigates on projecting verbs from interpersonal perspective of systematic-functional grammar and makes a comparative study of them between news discourse and short novels in order to find out whether different genre will influence the application of projection verbs and to offer reasons for it

    RURAL RESIDENTS SATISFACTION AND INFLUENCING FACTORS IN THE SUPPLY OF PUBLIC GOODS IN CHINA

    The satisfaction of farmers with the supply of rural public goods is an importantindicator of the effectiveness of rural public goods investment. Using cross-sectionaldata on 400 farmers in five counties of China’s Shaanxi province, this study adoptsordinal logit and probit models to investigate rural residents’ satisfaction and theinfluencing factors in the supply of public goods. The empirical results indicate thatthe income of farmers has a significantly negative impact on their satisfaction, farmerswho were consulted in the process of public goods supply have higher satisfactionlevels than farmers who were not, and farmers who profited from the supply of publicgoods are more satisfied than those who did not. Additionally, other factors have asignificant impact on the satisfaction of certain public products. For example, the olderthe respondents, the higher their satisfaction with medical hygiene service and highereducation levels among the respondents reduce their satisfaction with compulsoryeducation.     Host Galaxy Dispersion Measure of Fast Radio Burst

    Fast radio bursts are a class of transient radio sources that are thought to originate from extragalactic sources since their dispersion measure greatly exceeds the highest dispersion measure that the Milky Way interstellar medium can provide. Host Galaxies of twenty-two fast radio bursts have already been identified. In this paper, the dispersion measurement of these fast radio bursts produced by the Milky Way interstellar medium, and the intergalactic medium is obtained through known physical models to yield the host galaxy dispersion measure. It is observed that the host galaxy dispersion measure increases with its redshift value. We also obtained that the host galaxy dispersion measure has different distribution between repeaters and non-repeaters. It is noted that the reason for the divergence of the host galaxy dispersion measures should be accounted for by the difference in their local environment.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in American Research Journal of Physic

    Coherent quantum transport in disordered systems: II. Temperature dependence of carrier diffusion coefficients from the time-dependent wavepacket diffusion method

    The time-dependent wavepacket diffusion method for carrier quantum dynamics (Zhong and Zhao 2013 J. Chem. Phys. 138 014111), a truncated version of the stochastic Schrödinger equation/wavefunction approach that approximately satisfies the detailed balance principle and scales well with the size of the system, is applied to investigate the carrier transport in one-dimensional systems including both the static and dynamic disorders on site energies. The predicted diffusion coefficients with respect to temperature successfully bridge from band-like to hopping-type transport. As demonstrated in paper I (Moix et al 2013 New J. Phys. 15 085010), the static disorder tends to localize the carrier, whereas the dynamic disorder induces carrier dynamics. For the weak dynamic disorder, the diffusion coefficients are temperature-independent (band-like property) at low temperatures, which is consistent with the prediction from the Redfield equation, and a linear dependence of the coefficient on temperature (hopping-type property) only appears at high temperatures. In the intermediate regime of dynamic disorder, the transition from band-like to hopping-type transport can be easily observed at relatively low temperatures as the static disorder increases. When the dynamic disorder becomes strong, the carrier motion can follow the hopping-type mechanism even without static disorder.     Fabrication and plastic deformation of copper at small scales

    In the current study, copper nanowires are fabricated by filling the nanochannels of anodic aluminium oxide (AAO) templates using electrodeposition. The nanowires with different growth orientations as well as twin boundaries in some cases are obtained. Cu micropillars are machined from bulk materials using focused ion beam (FIB) milling. The micropillars oriented in the [235] and [156] directions, with and without a twin boundary, with a cylindrical or square shape and with different sizes are prepared. These pillars are then compressed by a nanoindenter equipped with a flat tip, and the stress-strain curves are obtained. The morphologies of the pillars are observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Thin foils of the pillars are prepared by FIB and examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning TEM (STEM). Finally, the dislocation structures are analysed to shed light on the investigation of the deformation mechanisms

    Nonequilibrium quantum dynamics of partial symmetry breaking for ultracold bosons in an optical lattice ring trap

    A vortex in a Bose-Einstein condensate on a ring undergoes quantum dynamics in response to a quantum quench in terms of partial symmetry breaking from a uniform lattice to a biperiodic one. Neither the current, a macroscopic measure, nor fidelity, a microscopic measure, exhibit critical behavior. Instead, the symmetry memory succeeds in identifying the point at which the system begins to forget its initial symmetry state. We further identify a symmetry energy difference in the low lying excited states which trends with the symmetry memory

    Optimizing Gear Shifting Strategy for Off-Road Vehicle with Dynamic Programming

    Gear shifting strategy of vehicle is important aid for the acquisition of dynamic performance and high economy. A dynamic programming (DP) algorithm is used to optimize the gear shifting schedule for off-road vehicle by using an objective function that weighs fuel use and trip time. The optimization is accomplished through discrete dynamic programming and a trade-off between trip time and fuel consumption is analyzed. By using concave and convex surface road as road profile, an optimal gear shifting strategy is used to control the longitudinal behavior of the vehicle. Simulation results show that the trip time can be reduced by powerful gear shifting strategy and fuel consumption can achieve high economy with economical gear shifting strategy in different initial conditions and route cases
