    Green tea (Camellia sinensis) and cancer prevention : a systematic review of randomized trials and epidemiological studies

    Background: Green tea is one of the most popular beverages worldwide. This review summarizes the beneficial effects of green tea on cancer prevention. Methods: Electronic databases, including PubMed (1966–2008), the Cochrane Library (Issue 1, 2008) and Chinese Biomedical Database (1978–2008) with supplement of relevant websites, were searched. There was no language restriction. The searches ended at March 2008. We included randomized and non-randomized clinical trials, epidemiological studies (cohort and case-control) and a meta-analysis. We excluded case series, case reports, in vitro and animal studies. Outcomes were measured with estimation of relative risk, hazard or odd ratios, with 95% confidence interval. Results: Forty-three epidemiological studies, four randomized trials and one meta-analysis were identified. The overall quality of these studies was evaluated as good or moderate. While some evidence suggests that green tea has beneficial effects on gastrointestinal cancers, the findings are not consistent. Conclusion: Green tea may have beneficial effects on cancer prevention. Further studies such as large and long term cohort studies and clinical trials are warranted

The virus remains latent in the urogenital tract, but can become transplant patients,reactivated. Asymptomatic reactivation and sporadic shedding of BK virus in urine can happen spontaneously in immunocompetant patients

Biomass derived bio-oil have been investigated intensively as an alternative of diesel and gasoline fuels. Bio-oil could be fractionized into organic phase and aqueous phase parts. The organic phase bio-oil can be easily upgraded to transport fuel. The aqueous phase bio-oil (AP-bio-oil) is of low value. There is no report for its usage or upgrading via biological methods.     PCR-Based Seamless Genome Editing with High Efficiency and Fidelity in <i>Escherichia coli</i>

    Efficiency and fidelity are the key obstacles for genome editing toolboxes. In the present study, a PCR-based tandem repeat assisted genome editing (TRAGE) method with high efficiency and fidelity was developed. The design of TRAGE is based on the mechanism of repair of spontaneous double-strand breakage (DSB) via replication fork reactivation. First, cat-sacB cassette flanked by tandem repeat sequence was integrated into target site in chromosome assisted by Red enzymes. Then, for the excision of the cat-sacB cassette, only subculturing is needed. The developed method was successfully applied for seamlessly deleting, substituting and inserting targeted genes using PCR products. The effects of different manipulations including sucrose addition time, subculture times in LB with sucrose and stages of inoculation on the efficiency were investigated. With our recommended procedure, seamless excision of cat-sacB cassette can be realized in 48 h efficiently. We believe that the developed method has great potential for seamless genome editing in E. coli

    Phytoplankton and Eutrophication Degree Assessment of Baiyangdian Lake Wetland, China

    Eight typical sampling sites were chosen to investigate the phytoplankton community structure and to assess the eutrophication degree of Baiyangdian Lake in 2009. Our results showed that among the total 133 species identified, Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta, and Bacillariophyta dominated the phytoplankton community. In spring, Chlorophyta and Bacillariophyta were the dominant phyla, and the dominant species included Chlorella sp., Chroomonas acuta Uterm., and Microcystis incerta Lemm.; the density of the phytoplankton ranged from 496×104 to 6256×104 cells/L with an average of 2384×104 cells/L. However, Chlorophyta and Cyanophyta became the dominant phyla in summer, and the dominant species were Chlorella sp., Leptolyngbya valderiana Anagn., and Nephrocytium agardhianum Nageli.; the density of the phytoplankton varied from 318×104 to 4630×104 cells/L with an average of 1785×104 cells/L. The density of the phytoplankton has increased significantly compared to the previous investigations in 2005. The index of Carlson nutritional status (TSIM) and the dominant genus assessment indicated that the majority of Baiyangdian Lake was in eutrophic state

    The influence of summer hypoxia on sedimentary phosphorus biogeochemistry in a coastal scallop farming area, North Yellow Sea

    In situ field investigations coupled with laboratory incubations were employed to explore the surface sedimentary phosphorus (P) cycle in a mariculture area adjacent to the Yangma Island suffering from summer hypoxia in the North Yellow Sea. Five forms of P were fractionated, namely exchangeable P (Ex-P), iron-bound P (Fe-P), authigenic apatite (Ca-P), detrital P (De-P) and organic P (OP). Total P (TP) varied from 13.42 to 23.88 mu mol g(-1) with the main form of inorganic P (IP). The benthic phosphate (DIP) fluxes were calculated based on incubation experiments. The results show that the sediment was an important source of P in summer with similar to 39% of the bioavailable P (Bio-P) recycled back into the water column. However, the sediment acted a sink of P in autumn. The benthic DIP fluxes were mainly controlled by the remobilizing of Fe-P, Ex-P and OP under contrasting redox conditions. In August (hypoxia season), similar to 0.92 mu mol g(-1) of Fe-P and similar to 0.52 mu mol g(-1) of OP could be transformed to DIP and released into water, while similar to 0.36 mu mol g(-1) of DIP was adsorbed to clay minerals. In November (non-hypoxia season), however, similar to 0.54 mu mol g(-1) of OP was converted into DIP, while similar to 0.55 mu mol g(-1) and similar to 0.28 mu mol g(-1) of DIP was adsorbed to clay minerals and bind to iron oxides. Furthermore, scallop farming activities also affected the P mobilization through biological deposition and reduced hydrodynamic conditions. The burial fluxes of P varied from 11.67 to 20.78 mu mol cm(-2) yr(-1) and its burial efficiency was 84.7-100%, which was consistent with that in most of the marginal seas worldwide. This study reveals that hypoxia and scallop farming activities can significantly promote sedimentary P mobility, thereby causing high benthic DIP flux in coastal waters. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V.
