Electrically Tunable Energy Bandgap in Dual-Gated Ultra-Thin Black Phosphorus Field Effect Transistors

The energy bandgap is an intrinsic character of semiconductors, which largely determines their properties. The ability to continuously and reversibly tune the bandgap of a single device during real time operation is of great importance not only to device physics but also to technological applications. Here we demonstrate a widely tunable bandgap of few-layer black phosphorus (BP) by the application of vertical electric field in dual-gated BP field-effect transistors. A total bandgap reduction of 124 meV is observed when the electrical displacement field is increased from 0.10V/nm to 0.83V/nm. Our results suggest appealing potential for few-layer BP as a tunable bandgap material in infrared optoelectronics, thermoelectric power generation and thermal imaging.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Chinese horseshoe crab (Tachypleus tridentatus) is a Xiphosura animal of significant commercial importance and in danger of extinction in China. To better estimate how genetic structure can be used to obtain a conservation perspective of the species, genetic variation was examined in nine locations covering its distributing range in the coast of Chinese mainland using ten nuclear microsatellite DNA loci and mitochondrial DNA control region (CR) sequences. Moderate levels of genetic diversity were detected (expected heterozygosity from microsatellites was 0.635, haplotype diversity from mitochondrial DNA was 0.800) as a whole. Significant genetic differentiation was detected only by mitochondrial DNA (FST = 0.0693, P < 0.01), while microsatellite markers indicated nuclear genetic homogeneity of these locations. Probably, nuclear genetic homogeneity was caused by outbreeding among different groups due to artificial transporting. Very weak genetic differentiation indicates that reintroduction programs of the movement and mixing of horseshoe crab from different locations will result in minimal negative genetic effects. Upon four management units were inferred from the results of CR analysis, accordingly four or more nature reserves should be established to conserve this endangered animal along the Chinese coast. Haplotype network pattern indicated that T. tridentatus population in Chinese coast has undergone historic population expansion and very recent historic population recession. Mismatch distributions analysis also revealed existence of historic demographic expansion. Keywords: Tachypleus tridentatus, microsatellites, mitochondrial DNA, population structure, genetic diversityAfrican Journal of Biotechnology Vol. 12(16), pp. 2088-209

Silicon nitride metalenses for unpolarized high-NA visible imaging

As one of nanoscale planar structures, metasurface has shown excellent superiorities on manipulating light intensity, phase and/or polarization with specially designed nanoposts pattern. It allows to miniature a bulky optical lens into the chip-size metalens with wavelength-order thickness, playing an unprecedented role in visible imaging systems (e.g. ultrawide-angle lens and telephoto). However, a CMOS-compatible metalens has yet to be achieved in the visible region due to the limitation on material properties such as transmission and compatibility. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a divergent metalens based on silicon nitride platform with large numerical aperture (NA~0.98) and high transmission (~0.8) for unpolarized visible light, fabricated by a 695-nm-thick hexagonal silicon nitride array with a minimum space of 42 nm between adjacent nanoposts. Nearly diffraction-limit virtual focus spots are achieved within the visible region. Such metalens enables to shrink objects into a micro-scale size field of view as small as a single-mode fiber core. Furthermore, a macroscopic metalens with 1-cm-diameter is also realized including over half billion nanoposts, showing a potential application of wide viewing-angle functionality. Thanks to the high-transmission and CMOS-compatibility of silicon nitride, our findings may open a new door for the miniaturization of optical lenses in the fields of optical fibers, microendoscopes, smart phones, aerial cameras, beam shaping, and other integrated on-chip devices.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure

Quality test of clamping connection of transmission lines across tensile line

This paper develops a new technology for the quality inspection of the transmission line that is important across the tensile clamp. The new technology mainly based on the ultrasonic pulse echo thickness measurement mechanism tests the thickness of the aluminum sleeve after crimping the tensile clamp to reflect the relative position of the aluminum sleeve and the steel anchor after the crimping, thereby judging whether there is a crimping positioning defect. At the same time, it is supplemented by steel anchor model comparison, crimping position length comparison, and crimping to margin detection to determine whether the transmission line crimping quality is qualified

Background: The content of resveratrol is relatively high in Polygonum cuspidatum Sieb. et Zucc., and the resveratrol has the effect of blood vessel dilating, microcirculation improving, platelet aggregation inhibiting and anti-cancer. The objective of this paper was to study the effect of resveratrol on lipid metabolism in hyperlipidemia mice. Materials and Methods: Through the establishment of an experimental mouse model of hyperlipidemia, the effect of resveratrol on change in total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) levels in mouse serum were determined. Results: Resveratrol group can apparently reduce TC, TG, LDL-c and AI of hyperlipidemic mice in a dose effect manner. Conclusion: We concluded that resveratrol can effectively reduce blood lipid levels of hyperlipidemic mice

Development of a thiophene derivative modified LDH coating for Mg alloy corrosion protection.

A new thiophene derivative corrosion inhibitor (CI) was developed to functionalize the layered double hydroxide (LDH) primer on Mg alloy to enhance corrosion protection. Compared with bare LDH coating, the composite coatings consisting of a MgAl-LDH primer and an outer CI layer showed highly compact surface structures without large pores and gaps, thereby indicating the enhanced capability to resist the penetration of corrosive species. Electrochemical tests revealed that the MgAl-LDH film modified with the newly synthesized CI exhibited higher charge transfer resistance and lower corrosion current density than films modified with commercial CIs. The highest enhancement in corrosion resistance was linked to the film's ability to repair physical damage by forming precipitates through chemical complexation and adsorption of the CIs. These findings open up new opportunities for the design and synthesis of a thiophene-contained inhibitor to modify LDH films and to obtain a composite coating with superior corrosion protection

Gobi agriculture: an innovative farming system that increases energy and water use efficiencies. A review

International audienceAbstractIn populated regions/countries with fast economic development, such as Africa, China, and India, arable land is rapidly shrinking due to urban construction and other industrial uses for the land. This creates unprecedented challenges to produce enough food to satisfy the increased food demands. Can the millions of desert-like, non-arable hectares be developed for food production? Can the abundantly available solar energy be used for crop production in controlled environments, such as solar-based greenhouses? Here, we review an innovative cultivation system, namely “Gobi agriculture.” We find that the innovative Gobi agriculture system has six unique characteristics: (i) it uses desert-like land resources with solar energy as the only energy source to produce fresh fruit and vegetables year-round, unlike conventional greenhouse production where the energy need is satisfied via burning fossil fuels or electrical consumption; (ii) clusters of individual cultivation units are made using locally available materials such as clay soil for the north walls of the facilities; (iii) land productivity (fresh produce per unit land per year) is 10–27 times higher and crop water use efficiency 20–35 times greater than traditional open-field, irrigated cultivation systems; (iv) crop nutrients are provided mainly via locally-made organic substrates, which reduce synthetic inorganic fertilizer use in crop production; (v) products have a lower environmental footprint than open-field cultivation due to solar energy as the only energy source and high crop yields per unit of input; and (vi) it creates rural employment, which improves the stability of rural communities. While this system has been described as a “Gobi-land miracle” for socioeconomic development, many challenges need to be addressed, such as water constraints, product safety, and ecological implications. We suggest that relevant policies are developed to ensure that the system boosts food production and enhances rural socioeconomics while protecting the fragile ecological environment

Modality-based attention and dual-stream multiple instance convolutional neural network for predicting microvascular invasion of hepatocellular carcinoma

Background and purposeThe presence of microvascular invasion (MVI) is a crucial indicator of postoperative recurrence in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Detecting MVI before surgery can improve personalized surgical planning and enhance patient survival. However, existing automatic diagnosis methods for MVI have certain limitations. Some methods only analyze information from a single slice and overlook the context of the entire lesion, while others require high computational resources to process the entire tumor with a three-dimension (3D) convolutional neural network (CNN), which could be challenging to train. To address these limitations, this paper proposes a modality-based attention and dual-stream multiple instance learning(MIL) CNN.Materials and methodsIn this retrospective study, 283 patients with histologically confirmed HCC who underwent surgical resection between April 2017 and September 2019 were included. Five magnetic resonance (MR) modalities including T2-weighted, arterial phase, venous phase, delay phase and apparent diffusion coefficient images were used in image acquisition of each patient. Firstly, Each two-dimension (2D) slice of HCC magnetic resonance image (MRI) was converted into an instance embedding. Secondly, modality attention module was designed to emulates the decision-making process of doctors and helped the model to focus on the important MRI sequences. Thirdly, instance embeddings of 3D scans were aggregated into a bag embedding by a dual-stream MIL aggregator, in which the critical slices were given greater consideration. The dataset was split into a training set and a testing set in a 4:1 ratio, and model performance was evaluated using five-fold cross-validation.ResultsUsing the proposed method, the prediction of MVI achieved an accuracy of 76.43% and an AUC of 74.22%, significantly surpassing the performance of the baseline methods.ConclusionOur modality-based attention and dual-stream MIL CNN can achieve outstanding results for MVI prediction
