Electron Conditioning of Technical Aluminium Surfaces: Effect on the Secondary Electron Yield
The effect of electron conditioning on commercially aluminium alloys 1100 and
6063 were investigated. Contrary to the assumption that electron conditioning,
if performed long enough, can reduce and stabilize the SEY to low values (, value of many pure elements), the SEY of aluminium did not go lower than
1.8. In fact, it reincreases with continued electron exposure dose.Comment: 36 pages, 25 figures, submitted to JVST
The use of microelectrodes with AGNES
Absence of gradients and nernstian equilibrium stripping (AGNES) is a new electroanalytical technique designed to determine free heavy metal ion concentrations in solutions. AGNES had been applied, up to date, with conventional equipment such as the hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE). Due to their much smaller volume, microelectrodes can reach a given preconcentration factor within a much shorter deposition time, so their use for AGNES has been evaluated in this work. For the particular case of the mercury microelectrode deposited onto an Ir disk (radius around 5 lm), AGNES has been successfully used for speciation purposes in the system Pb + PDCA (pyridinedicarboxylic acid). However, due to a relatively large capacitive current, which decays slowly, the limit of quantification for such microelectrodes has only been reduced by one half with respect to that of the HMDE
The α1âadrenergic receptor is involved in hepcidin upregulation induced by adrenaline and norepinephrine via the STAT3 pathway
Elevated body iron stores are associated with hypertension progression, while hypertension is associated with elevated plasma catecholamine levels in patients. However, there is a gap in our understanding of the connection between catecholamines and iron regulation. Hepcidin is a key ironâregulatory hormone, which maintains body iron balance. In the present study, we investigated the effects of adrenaline (AD) and norepinephrine (NE) on hepatic hepcidin regulation. Mice were treated with AD, NE, phenylephrine (PE, α1âadrenergic receptor agonist), prazosin (PZ, α1âadrenergic receptor antagonist), and/or propranolol (Pro, ÎČâadrenergic receptor antagonist). The levels of hepcidin, as well as signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), ferroportin 1 (FPN1), and ferritinâlight (FtâL) protein in the liver or spleen, were assessed. Six hours after AD, NE, or PE treatment, hepatic hepcidin mRNA levels increased. Pretreatment with PZ, but not Pro, abolished the effects of AD or NE on STAT3 phosphorylation and hepatic hepcidin expression. When mice were treated with AD or NE continuously for 7 days, an increase in hepatic hepcidin mRNA levels and serum hepcidin concentration was also observed. Meanwhile, the expected downstream effects of elevated hepcidin, namely decreased FPN1 expression and increased FtâL protein and nonâheme iron concentrations in the spleen, were observed after the continuous AD or NE treatments. Taken together, we found that AD or NE increase hepatic hepcidin expression via the α1âadrenergic receptor and STAT3 pathways in mice. The elevated hepatic hepcidin decreased FPN1 levels in the spleen, likely causing the increased iron accumulation in the spleen
Resonance modes of plasmonic nanorod metamaterials and their applications
Plasmonic nanorod metamaterials exhibit transversal and longitudinal resonance modes. It is found that the resonance intensity of the transversal modes (T-Modes) excited by the p- polarized wave is obviously larger than the intensity for the s- polarized wave at the wavelength of the transversal resonance, and the resonance intensity of the longitudinal modes (L-Modes) excited by the s- polarized wave is clearly larger than the intensity for the p- polarized wave at the longitudinal resonance wavelength, indicating a distinct polarization characteristics, which results from excitation of the different resonance modes of surface plasmons at different wavelengths. Moreover, the polarization behavior in near field regions for the different resonance modes has been demonstrated by the electric field distributions of the plasmonic nanorods based on FDTD simulation. In addition, the working wavelength of the polarizer can be tuned by the diameter and length of the silver nanorods in the visible spectral range, higher extinction ratios and lower insertion losses can be achieved based on the different resonance modes associated with the different polarizations. The polarizers will be a promising candidate for its potential applications in integration of nanophotonic devices
Study on cosmogenic activation above ground for the DarkSide-20k project
The activation of materials due to the exposure to cosmic rays may become an
important background source for experiments investigating rare event phenomena.
DarkSide-20k is a direct detection experiment for galactic dark matter
particles, using a two-phase liquid argon time projection chamber filled with
49.7 tonnes (active mass) of Underground Argon (UAr) depleted in 39Ar. Here,
the cosmogenic activity of relevant long-lived radioisotopes induced in the
argon and other massive components of the set-up has been estimated; production
of 120 t of radiopure UAr is foreseen. The expected exposure above ground and
production rates, either measured or calculated, have been considered. From the
simulated counting rates in the detector due to cosmogenic isotopes, it is
concluded that activation in copper and stainless steel is not problematic.
Activation of titanium, considered in early designs but not used in the final
design, is discussed. The activity of 39Ar induced during extraction,
purification and transport on surface, in baseline conditions, is evaluated to
be 2.8% of the activity measured in UAr from the same source, and thus
considered acceptable. Other products in the UAr such as 37Ar and 3H are shown
to not be relevant due to short half-life and assumed purification methods
