    Study on the Influence of Toilet Siphon Pipe Shape on Flushing Performance

    The goal of this work was to explore the influence of toilet siphon pipe shape on flushing performance. The flushing processes of a toilet under different shape parameters were simulated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with a volume of fluid (VOF) multiphase model. The effects of siphon pipe shape on flushing performance were analyzed in detail. The interpretation of the simulation results was experimentally validated. The results reveal that a toilet may obtain good flushing performance under one single shape parameter when the climbing angle, the arc width, the arc height, the pipe diameter, the climbing width, and the climbing height are about 48°, 45 mm, 210 mm, 50 mm, 90 mm and 30 mm, respectively. With the increase of the siphon pipe diameter, the toilet flushing performance peaks in the range between 50 and 53 mm rather than continuing to improve. In order to reasonably evaluate the flushing effect of the toilet, all flow parameters on a characteristic cross section of the siphon pipe, including the average velocity, the average pressure and the average mass flow rate, should be comprehensively considered instead of one single parameter. The findings of this study provide a reference for the pipe shape design of toilets

    Novel sequences of subgroup J avian leukosis viruses associated with hemangioma in Chinese layer hens

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Avian leukosis virus subgroup J (ALV-J) preferentially induces myeloid leukosis (ML) in meat-type birds. Since 2008, many clinical cases of hemangioma rather than ML have frequently been reported in association with ALV-J infection in Chinese layer flocks.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Three ALV-J strains associated with hemangioma were isolated and their proviral genomic sequences were determined. The three isolates, JL093-1, SD09DP03 and HLJ09MDJ-1, were 7,670, 7,670, and 7,633 nt in length. Their gag and pol genes were well conserved, with identities of 94.5-98.6% and 97.1-99.5%, respectively, with other ALV-J strains at the amino acid level (aa), while the env genes of the three isolates shared a higher aa identity with the env genes of other hemangioma strains than with those of ML strains. Interestingly, two novel 19-bp insertions in the U3 region in the LTR and 5' UTR, most likely derived from other retroviruses, were found in all the three isolates, thereby separately introducing one E2BP binding site in the U3 region in the LTR and RNA polymerase II transcription factor IIB and core promoter motif ten elements in the 5' UTR. Meanwhile, two binding sites in the U3 LTRs of the three isolates for NFAP-1 and AIB REP1 were lost, and a 1-base deletion in the E element of the 3' UTR of JL093-1 and SD09DP03 introduced a binding site for c-Ets-1. In addition to the changes listed above, the rTM of the 3' UTR was deleted in each of the three isolates.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our study is the first to discovery the coexistence of two novel insertions in the U3 region in the LTR and the 5' UTR of ALV-J associated with hemangioma symptoms, and the transcriptional regulatory elements introduced should be taken into consideration in the occurrence of hemangioma.</p

    A recombinant avian antibody against VP2 of infectious bursal disease virus protects chicken from viral infection

    【Abstract】A stable cell-line was established that expressed the recombinant avian antibody (rAb) against the infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV). rAb exhibited neutralization activity to IBDV-B87 strain in DF1 cells. The minimum rAb concentration required for inhibition of the cytopathic effect (CPE) was 1.563 μg/mL. To test the efficacy of rAb, a 168-h cohabitation challenge experiment was performed to transmit the disease from the chickens challenged with vvIBDV (HLJ0504 strain) to three test groups of chickens, i.e. (1) chickens treated with rAb, (2) chickens treated with yolk antibody, and (3) non-treatment chickens. The survival rates of chickens treated with rAb, yolk antibody and without treatment were 73%, 67% and 20%, respectively. Another batch of chickens was challenged with IBDV (BC6/85 strain) and then injected with rAb (1.0 mg/kg) 6, 24 and 36 h post-challenge. Non-treatment chickens had 100% morbidity, whereas those administered with rAb exhibited only 20% morbidity. Morbidity was evaluated using clinical indicators and bursal histopathological section.     Impact of biogenic SOA loading on the molecular composition of wintertime PM2.5 in urban Tianjin: an insight from Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry

    Biomass burning is one of the key sources of urban aerosols in the North China Plain, especially in winter when the impact of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) formed from biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) is generally considered to be minor. However, little is known about the influence of biogenic SOA loading on the molecular composition of wintertime organic aerosols. Here, we investigated the water-soluble organic compounds in fine particles (PM2.5) from urban Tianjin by ultrahigh-resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). Our results show that most of the CHO and CHON compounds were derived from biomass burning; they contain O-poor and highly unsaturated compounds with aromatic rings, which are sensitive to photochemical reactions, and some of which probably contribute to light-absorbing chromophores. Under moderate to high SOA loading conditions, the nocturnal chemistry is more efficient than photooxidation to generate secondary CHO and CHON compounds with high oxygen content. Under low SOA-loading, secondary CHO and CHON compounds with low oxygen content are mainly formed by photochemistry. Secondary CHO compounds are mainly derived from oxidation of monoterpenes. But nocturnal chemistry may be more productive to sesquiterpene-derived CHON compounds. In contrast, the number- and intensity-weight of S-containing groups (CHOS and CHONS) increased significantly with the increase of biogenic SOA-loading, which agrees with the fact that a majority of the S-containing groups are identified as organosulfates and nitrooxy-organosulfates that are derived from the oxidation of BVOCs. Terpenes may be potential major contributors to the chemical diversity of organosulfates and nitrooxy-organosulfates under photo-oxidation. While the nocturnal chemistry is more beneficial to the formation of organosulfates and nitrooxy-organosulfates under low SOA-loading. The SOA-loading is an important factor associating with the oxidation degree, nitrate group content and chemodiversity of nitrooxy-organosulfates. Furthermore, our study suggests that the hydrolysis of nitrooxy-organosulfates is a possible pathway for the formation of organosulfates.</p

    Residues 318 and 323 in capsid protein are involved in immune circumvention of the atypical epizootic infection of infectious bursal disease virus

    Recently, atypical infectious bursal disease (IBD) caused by a novel variant infectious bursal disease virus (varIBDV) suddenly appeared in immunized chicken flocks in East Asia and led to serious economic losses. The epizootic varIBDV can partly circumvent the immune protection of the existing vaccines against the persistently circulating very virulent IBDV (vvIBDV), but its mechanism is still unknown. This study proved that the neutralizing titer of vvIBDV antiserum to the epizootic varIBDV reduced by 7.0 log2, and the neutralizing titer of the epizootic varIBDV antiserum to vvIBDV reduced by 3.2 log2. In addition, one monoclonal antibody (MAb) 2-5C-6F had good neutralizing activity against vvIBDV but could not well recognize the epizootic varIBDV. The epitope of the MAb 2-5C-6F was identified, and two mutations of G318D and D323Q of capsid protein VP2 occurred in the epizootic varIBDV compared to vvIBDV. Subsequently, the indirect immunofluorescence assay based on serial mutants of VP2 protein verified that residue mutations 318 and 323 influenced the recognition of the epizootic varIBDV and vvIBDV by the MAb 2-5C-6F, which was further confirmed by the serial rescued mutated virus. The following cross-neutralizing assay directed by MAb showed residue mutations 318 and 323 also affected the neutralization of the virus. Further data also showed that the mutations of residues 318 and 323 of VP2 significantly affected the neutralization of the IBDV by antiserum, which might be deeply involved in the immune circumvention of the epizootic varIBDV in the vaccinated flock.     Reversible and Non-Competitive Inhibition of Cyclooxygenase by Indobufen for Efficient Antiplatelet Action and Relief of Gastrointestinal Irritation

    Clinically, indobufen is widely used for the treatment of antiplatelet aggregation and anticoagulation. Prior studies have discovered that abnormal platelet function can be promptly restored to normal when the drug is stopped. Herein, through the study of the enzyme reaction kinetics, we demonstrated that the inhibitory effect of indobufen on cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) was reversible and non-competitive. Specifically, the cyclooxygenase inhibition experiment showed that the level of 6-keto-PGF1α in the gastric mucosa of the indobufen-treated groups was significantly higher than that of the aspirin group (###p 2 in and a better physiological state of the gastric mucosa. Moreover, the rat gastric ulcer index and mucosal section experiments further confirmed the relief of gastrointestinal irritation and the adverse reaction rate of the indobufen-treated group compared to those of the aspirin group. Furthermore, indobufen was verified to exert reversible inhibitory activity on the heme group of COX-1 and thus reversibly inhibit COX-1 activity. In general, compared with aspirin, the long-term oral administration of indobufen yields a lower risk of gastrointestinal symptoms, such as ulcers

    The Over-40-Years-Epidemic of Infectious Bursal Disease Virus in China

    Infectious bursal disease (IBD) is an acute, highly contagious, immunosuppressive disease of chickens caused by the virus (IBDV), which critically threatens the development of the global chicken industry and causes huge economic losses. As a large country in the poultry industry, the epidemic history of IBDV in China for more than 40 years has been briefly discussed and summarized for the first time in this report. The first classic strain of IBDV appeared in China in the late 1970s. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the very virulent IBDV (vvIBDV) rapidly swept across the entirety of China, threatening the healthy development of the poultry industry for more than 30 years. Variants of IBDV, after long-term latent circulation with the accumulation of mutations since the early 1990s, suddenly reappeared as novel variant strains (nVarIBDV) in China in the mid-2010s. Currently, there is a coexistence of various IBDV genotypes; the newly emerging nVarIBDV of A2dB1 and persistently circulating vvIBDV of A3B3 are the two predominant epidemic strains endangering the poultry industry. Continuous epidemiological testing and the development of new prevention and control agents are important and require more attention. This report is of great significance to scientific cognition and the comprehensive prevention and control of the IBDV epidemic

    Morphologies and Mechanical Properties of Polyethersulfone Modified Epoxy Blends Through Multifunctional Epoxy Composition

    Thermoplastic polyethersulfone (PES) modified multifunctional tetraglycidyl-4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane (TGDDM) and triglycidyl para-aminophenol (TGAP) epoxy prepolymers cured with 4,4′-diaminodiphenylsulfone (44DDS) were prepared using a continuous reactor method and their reaction-induced phase separated morphologies and mechanical properties were measured and correlated with chemical compositions. 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) were used to quantify the chemical network formation. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) with nanomechanical mapping was employed to resolve the nanoscale phase-separated morphologies. The extent of phase separation in cured networks and resultant domain sizes were determined to be controllable depending upon the multifunctional epoxy compositions. The results obtained from mechanical studies further indicated that tensile modulus was not largely affected by multifunctional epoxy compositions while fracture toughness increased with increase of TGAP content. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
