    Measurement of professional identity in Chinese nursing students

    AbstractObjectivesChinese nurses continue to display low professional identity. It is becoming an emergent issue in China how to help nurse students develop their positive professional identity. This paper is to develop the Professional Identity Scale for Nursing Students (PISNS).MethodsLiterature review, and interviews with students and experts were adopted to develop initial item. Reliability and validity of the scale were respectively examined by computing internal consistency coefficient alpha and split-half Spearman Brown for equal length, and Exploratory Principle Component Factor Analysis.ResultsFive factors with 17-item were obtained explaining 58.9% of the total variance. Cronbach's alpha, and split-half reliability was 0.83 and 0.84 respectively.ConclusionsGiven its high reliability and validity, PISNS could be used as a measurement tool for educators to evaluate the developing level of professional identity in nursing students and assess the effectiveness of corresponding interventions and strategies

    Probability-guaranteed H∞ finite-horizon filtering for a class of nonlinear time-varying systems with sensor saturations

The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2012 ElsevierIn this paper, the probability-guaranteed H∞ finite-horizon filtering problem is investigated for a class of nonlinear time-varying systems with uncertain parameters and sensor saturations. The system matrices are functions of mutually independent stochastic variables that obey uniform distributions over known finite ranges. Attention is focused on the construction of a time-varying filter such that the prescribed H∞ performance requirement can be guaranteed with probability constraint. By using the difference linear matrix inequalities (DLMIs) approach, sufficient conditions are established to guarantee the desired performance of the designed finite-horizon filter. The time-varying filter gains can be obtained in terms of the feasible solutions of a set of DLMIs that can be recursively solved by using the semi-definite programming method. A computational algorithm is specifically developed for the addressed probability-guaranteed H∞ finite-horizon filtering problem.     Retrospective analysis for thirty-nine patients with solitary fibrous tumor of pleura and review of the literature

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP) is an uncommon neoplasm arising from mesenchymal cells. The aim of this study is to summarize the experience and the outcome of the surgical treatment for 39 cases of SFTP.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>From January 2004 to December 2008, 39 patients underwent surgical resection of SFTP in our department. All patients had clinical follow-up by the same team of surgeons. The mean follow-up was 40.3 months.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A local removal of the neoplasm was accomplished by video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) in 9 patients (group A) and by thoracotomy in 30 patients (group B) respectively. Comparing with group B, operations in group A took significantly less operative time, blood loss and spent less time in the intensive care unit and hospital. All specimens were positive for CD34 and Bcl-2. One patient developed recurrence, and the remaining 38 patients are alive and disease free at the end of follow-up.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Malignant SFTP still had the potential recurrence. VATS represents the more acceptable choice for the selected patients with SFTP.</p

    The Lysine Demethylase dKDM2 Is Non-essential for Viability, but Regulates Circadian Rhythms in Drosophila

    Post-translational modification of histones, such as histone methylation controlled by specific methyltransferases and demethylases, play critical roles in modulating chromatin dynamics and transcription in eukaryotes. Misregulation of histone methylation can lead to aberrant gene expression, thereby contributing to abnormal development and diseases such as cancer. As such, the mammalian lysine-specific demethylase 2 (KDM2) homologs, KDM2A and KDM2B, are either oncogenic or tumor suppressive depending on specific pathological contexts. However, the role of KDM2 proteins during development remains poorly understood. Unlike vertebrates, Drosophila has only one KDM2 homolog (dKDM2), but its functions in vivo remain elusive due to the complexities of the existing mutant alleles. To address this problem, we have generated two dKdm2 null alleles using the CRISPR/Cas9 technique. These dKdm2 homozygous mutants are fully viable and fertile, with no developmental defects observed under laboratory conditions. However, the dKdm2 null mutant adults display defects in circadian rhythms. Most of the dKdm2 mutants become arrhythmic under constant darkness, while the circadian period of the rhythmic mutant flies is approximately 1 h shorter than the control. Interestingly, lengthened circadian periods are observed when dKDM2 is overexpressed in circadian pacemaker neurons. Taken together, these results demonstrate that dKdm2 is not essential for viability; instead, dKDM2 protein plays important roles in regulating circadian rhythms in Drosophila. Further analyses of the molecular mechanisms of dKDM2 and its orthologs in vertebrates regarding the regulation of circadian rhythms will advance our understanding of the epigenetic regulations of circadian clocks

    Evaluation of Real-Time PCR Coupled With Multiplex Probe Melting Curve Analysis for Pathogen Detection in Patients With Suspected Bloodstream Infections.

    Background: This study aimed to evaluate real-time polymerase chain reaction coupled with multiplex probe melting curve analysis (PCR-MCA) for pathogen detection in patients with suspected bloodstream infections (BSIs). Methods: A PCR-MCA assay was developed for simultaneous identification of 28 kinds of the most common pathogens and two resistance genes within a few hours. The diagnostic performance of the PCR-MCA assay was determined and compared to the results of blood culture. Results: A total of 2,844 consecutive new episodes of suspected BSIs in 2,763 patients were included in this study. There were 269 episodes of pathogens identified by blood culture. For all the pathogens tested, the PCR-MCA assay exhibited a sensitivity of 88.8% (239/269), specificity of 100% (2,575/2,575), and agreement of 98.9% (2,814/2,844). For the pathogens on the PCR-MCA list, the PCR-MCA results had a sensitivity of 99.2% (239/241), specificity of 100% (2,575/2,575), and agreement of 99.9% (2,814/2,816) compared with the results of blood culture. For seven samples with multiple pathogens identified simultaneously during one blood culture investigation, the PCR-MCA assay verified the results of the blood culture, with an agreement rate of 100% for each. Conclusion: The PCR-MCA assay could discover 88.8% of the pathogens in clinical practice, showing excellent diagnostic performance vs. that of blood culture for pathogen detection in patients with suspected BSIs, and would contribute to rapid diagnosis and correct antibiotic administration
