    Graph-cellular automata (GCA) is implemented for zone IX of Chennai city. The population, population density, educational institution, industries, etc were taken as attribute. It is shown that GCA with particular structural properties defined in terms of the relationships between subsets of cells is a useful generalization of traditional cellular automaton (CA). The population data from Chennai census 1981, 1991, and 2001 were used to develop the GCA and the results are enumerated. The obtained results are compared with census data 2011

    Double Superhelix Model of High Density Lipoprotein

    High density lipoprotein (HDL), the carrier of so-called “good” cholesterol, serves as the major athero-protective lipoprotein and has emerged as a key therapeutic target for cardiovascular disease. We applied small angle neutron scattering (SANS) with contrast variation and selective isotopic deuteration to the study of nascent HDL to obtain the low resolution structure in solution of the overall time-averaged conformation of apolipoprotein AI (apoA-I) versus the lipid (acyl chain) core of the particle. Remarkably, apoA-I is observed to possess an open helical shape that wraps around a central ellipsoidal lipid phase. Using the low resolution SANS shapes of the protein and lipid core as scaffolding, an all-atom computational model for the protein and lipid components of nascent HDL was developed by integrating complementary structural data from hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry and previously published constraints from multiple biophysical techniques. Both SANS data and the new computational model, the double superhelix model, suggest an unexpected structural arrangement of protein and lipids of nascent HDL, an anti-parallel double superhelix wrapped around an ellipsoidal lipid phase. The protein and lipid organization in nascent HDL envisages a potential generalized mechanism for lipoprotein biogenesis and remodeling, biological processes critical to sterol and lipid transport, organismal energy metabolism, and innate immunity

    Modification of optical and electrical properties of zinc oxide-coated porous silicon nanostructures induced by swift heavy ion

    Morphological and optical characteristics of radio frequency-sputtered zinc aluminum oxide over porous silicon (PS) substrates were studied before and after irradiating composite films with 130 MeV of nickel ions at different fluences varying from 1 × 10(12) to 3 × 10(13) ions/cm(2). The effect of irradiation on the composite structure was investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL), and cathodoluminescence spectroscopy. Current–voltage characteristics of ZnO-PS heterojunctions were also measured. As compared to the granular crystallites of zinc oxide layer, Al-doped zinc oxide (ZnO) layer showed a flaky structure. The PL spectrum of the pristine composite structure consists of the emission from the ZnO layer as well as the near-infrared emission from the PS substrate. Due to an increase in the number of deep-level defects, possibly oxygen vacancies after swift ion irradiation, PS-Al-doped ZnO nanocomposites formed with high-porosity PS are shown to demonstrate a broadening in the PL emission band, leading to the white light emission. The broadening effect is found to increase with an increase in the ion fluence and porosity. XRD study revealed the relative resistance of the film against the irradiation, i.e., the irradiation of the structure failed to completely amorphize the structure, suggesting its possible application in optoelectronics and sensing applications under harsh radiation conditions

    Clinicopathological and morphological spectrum of gastrointestinal stromal tumours on multi-detector computed tomography

    Purpose: To describe the clinicopathological and morphological features of gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) on multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT). Material and methods: MDCT (plain and post contrast) images of 25 confirmed cases of GISTs were retrospectively evaluated from our hospital database. The images were analysed for the location, size, growth pattern, attenuation pattern, relation to adjacent structures, presence or absence of ulceration, calcification, metastases, lymphadenopathy, and for any complications such as haemorrhage, intestinal obstruction, etc. Institutional Ethics Committee clearance was obtained prior to the commencement of the study. Statistics used included percentage frequency. Results: Our study group comprised 14 males and 11 females. The mean age of our study population was 60 years (age range: 40 to 82 years). The mean tumour size was 11.7 cm. The stomach and small bowel accounted for 76% of the primary tumour site. The commonest imaging appearance of GIST observed in our study was that of an exophytic mass (76%) with a heterogenous pattern of enhancement (96%) with intratumoural necrosis (76%). MDCT demonstrated complications in three patients (12%). Six patients presented with metastatic foci (five to the liver and one to the lung), while lymphadenopathy was observed in five patients (20%). Associated complications included intestinal obstruction (8%) and retrogastric haematoma (4%). Incidental findings included uterine fibroid (n = 1), ovarian dermoid (n = 1), and chronic pancreatitis (n = 1). Conclusions: GISTs are predominantly large tumours with a well circumscribed and exophytic pattern on MDCT, with or without cystic/necrotic areas, and they mostly show a heterogenous pattern of enhancement on post-contrast administration

    Analysis of UK and European NOx and VOC emission scenarios in the Defra model intercomparison exercise

Please note that during the production process errors may be discovered which could affect the content, and all legal disclaimers that apply to the journal pertainSimple emission scenarios have been implemented in eight United Kingdom air quality models with the aim of assessing how these models compared when addressing whether photochemical ozone formation in southern England was NOx- or VOC-sensitive and whether ozone precursor sources in the UK or in the Rest of Europe (RoE) were the most important during July 2006. The suite of models included three Eulerian-grid models (three implementations of one of these models), a Lagrangian atmospheric dispersion model and two moving box air parcel models. The assignments as to NOx- or VOC-sensitive and to UK- versus RoE-dominant, turned out to be highly variable and often contradictory between the individual models. However, when the assignments were filtered by model performance on each day, many of the contradictions could be eliminated. Nevertheless, no one model was found to be the 'best' model on all days, indicating that no single air quality model could currently be relied upon to inform policymakers robustly in terms of NOx- versus VOC-sensitivity and UK- versus RoE-dominance on each day.     Dissipation of flubendiamide (480 SC) in cardamom [Elettaria cardamomum (L.) Maton]

    Insecticide flubendiamide was sprayed thrice at 21 days interval between December-February on cardamom at two concentrations, i.e. 0.72 g a.i. 10 L-1 (X), and 1.44 g a.i. 10 L-1 (2X). Samples of capsules were collected at regular intervals for 15 days after application of the insecticide for residue analysis. The initial deposit of flubendiamide in capsules was 0.42 and 0.60 mg kg-1 for X and 2X treatments, respectively that dissipated with a half-life of 1.25 and 2.53 days, respectively. No residue of des-iodo flubendiamide (the metabolite of flubendiamide) was detected in any of the samples up to 15 days. The limit of quantification (LOQ) of the method was 0.05 mg kg-1, for both flubendiamide and des-iodo flubendiamide. &nbsp

    Properties of Type Ia supernovae inside rich galaxy clusters

    We used the Gaussian Mixture Brightest Cluster Galaxy catalogue and Sloan Digital Sky Survey-II supernovae data with redshifts measured by the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey to identify 48 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) residing in rich galaxy clusters and compare their properties with 1015 SNe Ia in the field. Their light curves were parametrized by the SALT2 model and the significance of the observed differences was assessed by a resampling technique. To test our samples and methods, we first looked for known differences between SNe Ia residing in active and passive galaxies. We confirm that passive galaxies host SNe Ia with smaller stretch, weaker colour–luminosity relation [β of 2.54(22) against 3.35(14)], and that are ∼0.1 mag more luminous after stretch and colour corrections. We show that only 0.02 per cent of random samples drawn from our set of SNe Ia in active galaxies can reach these values. Reported differences in the Hubble residuals scatter could not be detected, possibly due to the exclusion of outliers. We then show that, while most field and cluster SNe Ia properties are compatible at the current level, their stretch distributions are different (∼3σ): besides having a higher concentration of passive galaxies than the field, the cluster’s passive galaxies host SNe Ia with an average stretch even smaller than those in field passive galaxies (at 95 per cent confidence).We argue that the older age of passive galaxies in clusters is responsible for this effect since, as we show, old passive galaxies host SNe Ia with smaller stretch than young passive galaxies (∼4σ).Web of Scienc
