Stabilized plane and axisymmetric piezoelectric finite element models
This paper derives a four-node plane, a nine-node plane and a four-node axisymmetric stabilized elements for piezoelectric analysis. All elements are formulated by a stabilization approach founded on the generalized Hellinger-Reissner functional which employs stress, electric displacement, displacement and electric potential as the independent field variables. The lower and higher order stress and electric displacement are chosen to be orthogonal such that their coupling terms in the electromechanical flexibility matrices vanish. In the absence of the higher order modes, the elements are equivalent to their uniformly reduced integrated counterparts. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate that the stabilized elements are markedly more accurate than the standard fully integrated elements. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.postprin
Electric assumptions for piezoelectric laminate analysis
In computational analysis of piezoelectric laminates which may comprise piezoelectric and non-piezoelectric plies, the transverse electric field is often assumed to be piecewise constant along the transverse direction. This conventional assumption may lead to significant errors unless the piezoelectric ply is considerably thinner than the overall thickness of the laminate. To this end, two alternate assumptions termed EL and DC on the spatial distributions of the electric variables are proposed. In EL, the transverse electric field is taken to be piecewise linear along the transverse direction. In the DC assumption, the transverse electric displacement is taken to be piecewise constant along the transverse direction. The rationales leading to the proposed assumptions are discussed. Numerical examples indicate that the proposed assumptions are markedly more accurate than the conventional one. However, EL becomes inaccurate when its piecewise function spans more than one ply. Probing deep level centers in GaN epilayers with variable-frequency capacitance-voltage characteristics of AuGaN Schottky contacts
Under identical preparation conditions, AuGaN Schottky contacts were prepared on two kinds of GaN epilayers with significantly different background electron concentrations and mobility as well as yellow emission intensities. Current-voltage (I-V) and variable-frequency capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics show that the Schottky contacts on the GaN epilayer with a higher background carrier concentration and strong yellow emission exhibit anomalous reverse-bias I-V and C-V characteristics. This is attributed to the presence of deep level centers. Theoretical simulation of the low-frequency C-V curves leads to a determination of the density and energy level position of the deep centers. © 2006 American Institute of Physics.published_or_final_versio

Evidence for genetic association of TBX21 and IFNG with systemic lupus erythematosus in a Chinese Han population
TBX21 recode T-bet which is an important transcription factor that drives the Th1 immune response primarily by promoting expression of the interferon-gamma (IFNG) gene. Recent studies have shown that genetic variants in TBX21 and IFNG are connected with risk of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The aim of the present study was to replicate these genetic associations with SLE in Anhui Chinese population. Genotyping of 3 variants (rs4794067 in TBX21, rs2069705 and rs2069718 in IFNG) was performed. A total of 3732 subjects were included in the final analysis. The study only identified the association of rs2069705 with SLE susceptibility (T vs. C: odds ratio [OR] = 1.12, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.00-1.26, P = 0.046). Combined analysis with Hong Kong GWAS showed that the OR for rs2069705 was 1.10 (95% CI: 1.01-1.21, P = 0.027). Further pooled analysis with Korean populations involving 10498 subjects showed a more significant association between rs2069705 and SLE (T vs. C: OR = 1.11, 95%CI = 1.04-1.19, P = 0.002; TT + TC vs. CC: OR = 1.11, 95%CI = 1.02-1.21, P = 0.012; TT vs. TC + CC: OR = 1.28, 95%CI = 1.07-1.54, P = 0.008; TT vs. CC: OR = 1.33, 95%CI = 1.10-1.60, P = 0.003). In addition, we also identified a significant genetic interaction between rs2069705 and rs4794067 in Anhui Chinese population. Responses of yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco Richardson) exposed to dietary cyanobacteria and subsequent recovery
A 120-day toxicity experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary cyanobacteria on the growth and liver histopathology of yellow catfish, and subsequent recovery when the fish were free of cyanobacteria. Three experimental diets were formulated: the control (cyanobacteria-free diet), low-cyanobacteria diet (LCD, 32.3 mu g microsystins/g) and high-cyanobacteria diet (HCD, 71.96 mu g microsystins/g). Each diet was fed to fish for 60 days and then all fish were free of cyanobacteria for a further 60 days. The results showed that a significant decrease in the specific growth rate (SGR) was observed in both fish fed with the LCD and HCD after a 1st 30-day exposure period, however, no significant difference in the SGR between the LCD and control groups was observed after a 2nd 30-day exposure period. At the end of the 60 days exposure, all examined liver tissues in both doses exhibited what appeared as dose-dependent histopathological modifications. After a 60-day recovery, there were no significant differences in the SGR among groups, while no obvious histopathological alteration was observed in livers of fish previously fed with the LCD. The results indicate that the LCD-treated fish have a full recovery after a 60-day recovery, but the HCD-treated fish did not. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Transthoracic echocardiography reference values in juvenile and adult 129/Sv mice
Background In the recent years, the use of Doppler-echocardiography has become a standard non-invasive technique in the analysis of cardiac malformations in genetically modified mice. Therefore, normal values have to be established for the most commonly used inbred strains in whose genetic background those mutations are generated. Here we provide reference values for transthoracic echocardiography measurements in juvenile (3 weeks) and adult (8 weeks) 129/Sv mice.
Methods Echocardiographic measurements were performed using B-mode, M-mode and Doppler-mode in 15 juvenile (3 weeks) and 15 adult (8 weeks) mice, during isoflurane anesthesia. M-mode measurements variability of left ventricle (LV) was determined.
Results Several echocardiographic measurements significantly differ between juvenile and adult mice. Most of these measurements are related with cardiac dimensions. All B-mode measurements were different between juveniles and adults (higher in the adults), except for fractional area change (FAC). Ejection fraction (EF) and fractional shortening (FS), calculated from M-mode parameters, do not differ between juvenile and adult mice. Stroke volume (SV) and cardiac output (CO) were significantly different between juvenile and adult mice. SV was 31.93 ± 8.67 μl in juveniles vs 70.61 ± 24.66 μl in adults, ρ < 0.001. CO was 12.06 ± 4.05 ml/min in juveniles vs 29.71 ± 10.13 ml/min in adults, ρ < 0.001. No difference was found in mitral valve (MV) and tricuspid valve (TV) related parameters between juvenile and adult mice. It was demonstrated that variability of M-mode measurements of LV is minimal. Conclusions
This study suggests that differences in cardiac dimensions, as wells as in pulmonary and aorta outflow parameters, were found between juvenile and adult mice. However, mitral and tricuspid inflow parameters seem to be similar between 3 weeks and 8 weeks mice. The reference values established in this study would contribute as a basis to future studies in post-natal cardiovascular development and diagnosing cardiovascular disorders in genetically modified mouse mutant lines.Peer Reviewe
