    Data Unfolding with Wiener-SVD Method

    Data unfolding is a common analysis technique used in HEP data analysis. Inspired by the deconvolution technique in the digital signal processing, a new unfolding technique based on the SVD technique and the well-known Wiener filter is introduced. The Wiener-SVD unfolding approach achieves the unfolding by maximizing the signal to noise ratios in the effective frequency domain given expectations of signal and noise and is free from regularization parameter. Through a couple examples, the pros and cons of the Wiener-SVD approach as well as the nature of the unfolded results are discussed.Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, match the accepted version by JINS

    Cryptotanshinone Induces Apoptosis of HL-60 Cells via Mitochondrial Pathway

    Purpose: To test the effect of Cryptotanshinone (CPT), a natural  compound isolated from the plant Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, on human leukemic cell lines (HL-60).Methods: HL-60 cells were treated with CPT. Cell growth inhibition (%) was quantitated using MTT assay. Apoptosis detection with Annexin  V-FITC/propidium iodide staining was followed by flow cytometry. Caspase-3, caspase-8, and caspase-9 colorimetric assay kit was used to determine caspase protease activity. Loss of mitochondrial membrane potential was examined by flow cytometry with JC-1 staining. Bax, PARP, p53, p21 and cytochrome C were determined using Western blot.Results: Morphologic assessment, Annexin V-FITC/propidium iodide  staining results and sub-G1 percentage indicate that the cytotoxic effect of CPT was mediated by induction of apoptosis. Furthermore, increased Bax expression, decreased Bcl-2 expression, loss of mitochondria membranepotential (MMP), release of cytochrome C, activation of caspase enzyme, cleavage of PARP and accumulation of p53 and p21 were detected during the apoptotic process. Caspase inhibitor partially abrogated CPT-induced apoptosis.Conclusion: The results show that CPT induced apoptosis of HL-60 cell lines by mitochondria pathway, and suggest that CPT may serve as a potential therapy for leukemia.Keywords: Cryptotanshinone, Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, Caspase,  Membrane potential, Mitochondrial, Apoptosis, Leukemia, Cytochrome C, Cell cycl

    A wall interference assessment/correction system

    A Wall Signature method, the Hackett method, has been selected to be adapted for the 12-ft Wind Tunnel wall interference assessment/correction (WIAC) system in the present phase. This method uses limited measurements of the static pressure at the wall, in conjunction with the solid wall boundary condition, to determine the strength and distribution of singularities representing the test article. The singularities are used in turn for estimating wall interferences at the model location. The Wall Signature method will be formulated for application to the unique geometry of the 12-ft Tunnel. The development and implementation of a working prototype will be completed, delivered and documented with a software manual. The WIAC code will be validated by conducting numerically simulated experiments rather than actual wind tunnel experiments. The simulations will be used to generate both free-air and confined wind-tunnel flow fields for each of the test articles over a range of test configurations. Specifically, the pressure signature at the test section wall will be computed for the tunnel case to provide the simulated 'measured' data. These data will serve as the input for the WIAC method-Wall Signature method. The performance of the WIAC method then may be evaluated by comparing the corrected parameters with those for the free-air simulation. Each set of wind tunnel/test article numerical simulations provides data to validate the WIAC method. A numerical wind tunnel test simulation is initiated to validate the WIAC methods developed in the project. In the present reported period, the blockage correction has been developed and implemented for a rectangular tunnel as well as the 12-ft Pressure Tunnel.     The application of KAZE features to the classification echocardiogram videos

    In the computer vision field, both approaches of SIFT and SURF are prevalent in the extraction of scale-invariant points and have demonstrated a number of advantages. However, when they are applied to medical images with relevant low contrast between target structures and surrounding regions, these approaches lack the ability to distinguish salient features. Therefore, this research proposes a different approach by extracting feature points using the emerging method of KAZE. As such, to categorise a collection of video images of echocardiograms, KAZE feature points, coupled with three popular representation methods, are addressed in this paper, which includes the bag of words (BOW), sparse coding, and Fisher vector (FV). In comparison with the SIFT features represented using Sparse coding approach that gives 72% overall performance on the classification of eight viewpoints, KAZE feature integrated with either BOW, sparse coding or FV improves the performance significantly with the accuracy being 81.09%, 78.85% and 80.8% respectively. When it comes to distinguish only three primary view locations, 97.44% accuracy can be achieved when employing the approach of KAZE whereas 90% accuracy is realised while applying SIFT features

    Thermodynamical quantities of lattice full QCD from an efficient method

    I extend to QCD an efficient method for lattice gauge theory with dynamical fermions. Once the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator and the density of states of pure gluonic configurations at a set of plaquette energies (proportional to the gauge action) are computed, thermodynamical quantities deriving from the partition function can be obtained for arbitrary flavor number, quark masses and wide range of coupling constants, without additional computational cost. Results for the chiral condensate and gauge action are presented on the 10410^4 lattice at flavor number Nf=0N_f=0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and many quark masses and coupling constants. New results in the chiral limit for the gauge action and its correlation with the chiral condensate, which are useful for analyzing the QCD chiral phase structure, are also provided.Comment: Latex, 11 figures, version accepted for publicatio

    Mass Hierarchy Resolution in Reactor Anti-neutrino Experiments: Parameter Degeneracies and Detector Energy Response

    Determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy using a reactor neutrino experiment at \sim60 km is analyzed. Such a measurement is challenging due to the finite detector resolution, the absolute energy scale calibration, as well as the degeneracies caused by current experimental uncertainty of Δm322|\Delta m^2_{32}|. The standard χ2\chi^2 method is compared with a proposed Fourier transformation method. In addition, we show that for such a measurement to succeed, one must understand the non-linearity of the detector energy scale at the level of a few tenths of percent.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted by PR

    Stability of the Period-Doubled Core of the 90-degree Partial in Silicon

    In a recent Letter [N. Lehto and S. Oberg, Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 5568 (1998)], Lehto and Oberg investigated the effects of strain fields on the core structure of the 90-degree partial dislocation in silicon, especially the influence of the choice of supercell periodic boundary conditions in theoretical simulations. We show that their results for the relative stability between the two structures are in disagreement with cell-size converged tight-binding total energy (TBTE) calculations, which suggest the DP core to be more stable, regardless of the choice of boundary condition. Moreover, we argue that this disagreement is due to their use of a Keating potential.Comment: 1 page. Submitted to Comments section of PRL.
