    Resumen basado en el de la publicaciónSe recogen algunas experiencias sobre el uso de los medios de comunicación en la escuela bilingüe de Sydney, y sobre las posibilidades de los niños y profesores que viven entre dos culturas, la brasileña y la australiana. El crecimiento de la comunidad brasileña en esta ciudad australiana es sobrepasado por el avance tecnológico de los medios de comunicación, que ha permitido experiencias en las migraciones históricas, en cuanto al contacto con el país de origen y de destino. El uso de los medios de comunicación en las escuelas busca relacionar las dos realidades culturales, integrando múltiples sentimientos de pertenencia y reconfiguración de identidades, como nueva estrategia en los procesos de integración, combatiendo la clásica noción moderna de pertenencia a un estado- nación y una identidad cultural. A partir de Internet y de los medios de comunicación alternativos producidos por asociaciones culturales, las diásporas tienen nuevas herramientas para actualizarse y reelaborar sentimientos de pertenencia.Universitat de Barcelona.     Communication can be understood through several ‘dispositives’ or modes of communication. For this study, writing was chosen as the mode of communication. It bifurcates-due to technological and cultural transformations-into the existence of printed media and digital writing. From this point of view, it is possible to analyze the coexistence of printed media and digital writing. It is also possible to analyze the relation of these media to culture and subjectification. Starting from a genealogical focus, the study proposes that media and communication systems cannot be understood apart from culture. In this sense, it is possible to perceive the processuality of the social agents in different time periods. Therefore, the study has a “weaving” character, where some authors like Marshall Mc Luhan, Pierre Lévy, Félix Guattari, Neil Postman, André Lemos and Celso Cândido contribute with various “threads”, suggesting a multidisciplinary understanding of the relationship among culture, media and subjectivity.A comunicação pode ser entendida através de diversos dispositivos.     The other Brazilians : community ambivalences among Brazilians in Sydney

    The migration of Brazilians to Australia is a relatively new phenomenon, and has been increasing since the 1990s. Although an imagined Brazilian community is part of everyday discourses of Brazilians, receiving society and media, this concept is ambivalent. I address the limitations of multiculturalism and its correlated notion of diasporic community to point to other alternatives for understanding communal feelings, nostalgia and homebuilding. This perspective unveils disjunctions between the multiculturalist view of community and the lived experience of communities. I demonstrate the existence of shunning behaviour among Brazilians, and argue that such trend is due to their desire to recover their whiteness, cosmopolitanism and Western ethos in Australia. I also show that Brazilians use identity in a strategic way to work out their integration, such as the uses of a cosmopolitan identity and a pan-Latin American identity. These distinctions show that Brazilians have different degrees of affective investment in the Brazilian culture, belonging and integration strategies. In this light, we ought to think in terms of networking in order to deconstruct simplifications of a migrant community through culturalist explanations

    Intimate multiculturalism : transnationalism and belonging amongst Capoeiristas in Australia

    Capoeira, the Afro-Brazilian dance-cum-martial art, has acquired a worldwide popularity. In this paper, we explore the relationships established by Australian students and Brazilian masters of Capoeira. We draw on and extend Wise and Velayutham's notion of everyday multiculturalism. This concept points to the need to research informal vernacular intercultural negotiations that happen at an everyday level. However, we wish to drill down beneath the surface of everyday public cultural negotiations to recognise the transactions that take place in relatively intimate settings. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted from 2006 to 2010 in Australia, we coin the concept of intimate multiculturalism to argue that it is in very close intercultural encounters that people reinvent themselves, question their belonging to one national imagined community and embody other forms of being. We also show that practices brought by migrants are not only intercultural (such as people from different cultural backgrounds practicing Capoeira) but also transnational. In this sense, this responds to the recent call for scholars to switch the focus from diaspora studies to everyday practices of intercultural encounters and to how we live with difference in intimate ordinary situations
