Exact Solution of a Monomer-Dimer Problem: A Single Boundary Monomer on a Non-Bipartite Lattice
We solve the monomer-dimer problem on a non-bipartite lattice, the simple
quartic lattice with cylindrical boundary conditions, with a single monomer
residing on the boundary. Due to the non-bipartite nature of the lattice, the
well-known method of a Temperley bijection of solving single-monomer problems
cannot be used. In this paper we derive the solution by mapping the problem
onto one on close-packed dimers on a related lattice. Finite-size analysis of
the solution is carried out. We find from asymptotic expansions of the free
energy that the central charge in the logarithmic conformal field theory

In vitro investigation of the hypoglycemic activity of yeasts using models of rat epididymal adipocyte and differentiated mouse 3T3-L1 adipocyte
The differentiated mouse 3T3-L1 adipocytes (3T3-L1 model) were used in studying glucose metabolisms without the need for feeding (Sprague-Dawley, SD model) the rat prior to hypoglycemic activity evaluation. Both models were adopted to evaluate the hypoglycemic activities of 58 yeast strains isolated from various sources (grape, vine yard soil, winery soil). Among the 58 tested yeast isolates, strain 54 (Saccharomyces pastorianus no. 54) which showed the highest hypoglycemic activity was chosen to be the test strain. The optimal insulin concentration used in these 2 models (SD and 3T3-L1) for measuring the hypoglycemic activity of hypoglycemic yeast extract (HGYE) was 10 nM. The range of linear relation in the dose-response curve was 0-1000 g/ml for SD model, and 0-250 g/ml for 3T3-L1 model. The linear coefficient was 0.8611. The radioactive labeled 2-[1-14C]-Deoxy-D-Glucose was also used to confirm cytoplasmic glucose uptake by 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Comparing both the results of insulin effect and dose response of HGYE by both models, it was concluded that the 3T3-L1 model can serve as a rapid and reliable assay model for in vitro evaluation of hypoglycemic activity of yeast.Key words: 3T3-L1 adipocytes, Sprague-Dawley (SD) rat, epididymal adipocytes, hypoglycemic activity, yeast
Scaling of 1/f noise in tunable break-junctions
We have studied the voltage noise of gold nano-contacts in
electromigrated and mechanically controlled break-junctions having resistance
values that can be tuned from 10 (many channels) to 10 k
(single atom contact). The noise is caused by resistance fluctuations as
evidenced by the dependence of the power spectral density
on the applied DC voltage . As a function of the normalized noise
shows a pronounced cross-over from for low-ohmic
junctions to for high-ohmic ones. The measured powers of 3
and 1.5 are in agreement with -noise generated in the bulk and reflect the
transition from diffusive to ballistic transport

Evaluating the impact of trigeminal neuralgia
Patients with idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia (TN) were categorised into 3 subtypes (n 5 225). Group 1 (n 5 155, 68.9%) had TN
without concomitant pain, group 2 (n532, 14.2%) had TN with intermittent concomitant pain, and group 3 (n539, 16.9%) had TN
with autonomic symptoms. We tested 2 hypotheses: (1) that different pain profiles would be associated with the different groups; (2)
that the severe pain associated with TN would impact negatively on activities of daily living and thereby result in disability as defined
by the World Health Organisation. A different pain profile was found across the groups. We obtained unequivocal evidence that TN
causes disability with up to 45% of patients being absent from usual daily activities 15 days or more in the past 6 months. On the
Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, 35.7% patients had mild-to-severe depression and over 50% were anxious. The Pain
Catastrophizing Scale showed that 78% of patients had considerable negative thoughts with scores.20 and a mean score of 36.4.
Prior to referral, only 54% had been prescribed carbamazepine while opioids had been prescribed in 14.6% of the patients. Prior to
referral, over 80% had already been to 1 specialist centre which had not provided appropriate management. Patients with TN report
varied characteristics but all result in some degree of psychosocial disability especially before adequate therapy is attained

Evolution of superconductivity in K2-xFe4+ySe5: Spectroscopic studies of X-ray absorption and emission.
This study investigates the evolution of superconductivity in K2-xFe4+ySe5 using temperature-dependent X-ray absorption and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering techniques. Magnetization measurements show that polycrystalline superconducting (SC) K1.9Fe4.2Se5 has a critical temperature (T c) of ∼31 K with a varying superconducting volume fraction, which strongly depends on its synthesis temperature. An increase in Fe-structural/vacancy disorder in SC samples with more Fe atoms occupying vacant 4d sites is found to be closely related to the decrease in the spin magnetic moment of Fe. Moreover, the nearest-neighbor Fe-Se bond length in SC samples exceeds that in the non-SC (NS) sample, K2Fe4Se5, which indicates a weaker hybridization between the Fe 3d and Se 4p states in SC samples. These results clearly demonstrate the correlations among the local electronic and atomic structures and the magnetic properties of K2-xFe4+ySe5 superconductors, providing deeper insight into the electron pairing mechanisms of superconductivity
Effect of starvation on growth, histology and ultrastructure of digestive system of juvenile red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii Girard)
The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of 20 d starvation on growth, survival, histomorphology and ultrastructure changes in the digestive system of juvenile red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). Juveniles were divided into two groups: a food-deprived group and a control group at 9 day after hatch (DAH). Individuals were sampled at 14, 20, 29 DAH. During the 20 d fasting period, the mean body weight and total body length of crayfish fluctuated around 10.17 mg and 8.12 mm respectively, and the mortality was zero. Histomorphological changes of digestive system were observed in the food-deprived group after 20 days of starvation: the esophagus and stomach walls were thinning, the epithelium atrophied to cuboidal, nuclei were darker and smaller, and nucleolus was difficult to observe; the midgut and hindgut showed wider volume, thinning wall, atrophied epithelial and muscularis and shorter ridges; and hepatopancreas tubule lumens were wider, the lipid droplets in R-cells were smaller and less, and the quantity of typical B-cells decreased. Changes in the ultrastructure of starved crayfish were also observed: the mitochondria of midgut epithelium and R-cells were swollen and vacuolated, and the ridges of which were fractured and reduced. In addition, the electron density of cytoplasmic matrix of R-cells decreased, and the quantity of glycogen granules and lipids also decreased. Changes in the ultrastructure of B-cells were similar to those of R-cells. Though degeneration in histological structure and function of digestive organs were obvious during starvation, juvenile P. clarkii was able to endure a relative long-term starvation
