    Serverless Computing for Scientific Applications

Serverless computing has become an important model in cloud computing and influenced the design of many applications. Here, we provide our perspective on how the recent landscape of serverless computing for scientific applications looks like. We discuss the advantages and problems with serverless computing for scientific applications, and based on the analysis of existing solutions and approaches, we propose a science-oriented architecture for a serverless computing framework that is based on the existing designs. Finally, we provide an outlook of current trends and future directions

The article focuses on housing problems of youth, which is one of the most important problems of our time, which is directly related to the choice of scope of work and clearly illustrates the relationship of economy and social sphere. Revealed that factors such as income, availability of own housing and decent living conditions positively affect the expression of creativity and help attract youth to innovation. Use methods and tools for mortgage motivation of innovative potential of youth are offered. The author of the model of social mortgage lending for young scientists, professionals and their families are designed

Efficient method of finding scaling exponents from finite-size Monte-Carlo simulations

Monte-Carlo simulations are routinely used for estimating the scaling exponents of complex systems. However, due to finite-size effects, determining the exponent values is often difficult and not reliable. Here we present a novel technique of dealing with the problem of finite-size scaling. This new method allows not only to decrease the uncertainties of the scaling exponents, but makes it also possible to determine the exponents of the asymptotic corrections to the scaling laws. The efficiency of the technique is demonstrated by finding the scaling exponent of uncorrelated percolation cluster hulls.Comment: The "previous version" of this is arXiv:0804.1911. Quantum Nature of Winter Depression

Depression is a disease that concerns a growing group of people: children, youth, adult and the elderly. Statistics indicate that 5 up to 20% of the population of the globe suffer from it. Women suffer from this disease four times more often than men. Depression is such a mental state in which the patient has a deep sense of meaninglessness of life and sees the world in the gloomy colors. Such a person is depressed, their mood affects the job, interpersonal relationships, and learning process. They have a feeling of hopelessness, worthlessness, pessimism and sadness. In many cases patients suffering from depression contemplate or attempt suicide. They cannot notice the solution of their problems. Moreover, they cannot imagine their future, if they were stopped in time. For such people only the past and their past failures matter. Time stopped for them. In addition to endogenous depression, there is also autumn-winter depression, which is a seasonal disease. The first symptoms appear in early autumn. The improvement of the patients' mental health is observed from February whereas the next symptoms of the disease appear spontaneously in March and April. Winter depression is caused by a prolonged night in autumn and winter and this fact results in the prolonged synthesis of melatonin by the pineal gland, which affects the development of depression

The paper concerns the public administration, which in the past was a discipline mainly connected with political science and public policy, and today is the subject with theoretical roots in institutional and network theory. The author presents the evolution of the following concepts (Public Administration, New Public Management, New Public Governance) showing their main characteristics. The network creation and network management seems to be the future of improving public sector’s results. The Polish public administration follows the mood of changes in this regard. Today the changes are more efficiency oriented (NPM concept), but there are also some signs that the concept of New Public Governance is possible (in the future) in the Polish realities. Today it is rather cooperative approach than network approach, but these processes have to last time

Mieszkając ze zwierzętami : domowa koegzystencja ludzi i zwierząt w perspektywie posthumanizmu

The dissertation’s aim is to present the relationships between humans and animals that form and evolve in home. Using the view of posthumanism allowed to address such issues as interspecies affections, modes of representation of the animal, food taboos, the differences between the biological systematics and volk taxonomy, redefinition of language. The construction of the definition of pets and companion animals was an important part of the work, as well as the discussion about the posthuman optics. The dissertation contains a theoretical part, four analytical parts and summary. Sequence of the analysis sections corresponds to the chronology of the relationships between human and animal, and presents itself as follows: Zoonatologies present the birth of the companion species, namely the creation of pets for man and man for pets. I made reinterpretation of the major myths standing at the beginning of the human-animal relation, I presented the places, where human and animal meet, and I analyzed their semiotics. An important element was to discuss the problem of love as affection, which can constitute the existence of the categories of pets and companion animals. Zoadolescence is about the adolescence of the human relationship with pets. I discussed the basics of the animal rights that refer to pets, as well as the food taboos and shame as an influence on human-animal relationship. Zooptics show how looking at animals confuses the ontological and epistemological questions. The main goal of the four sections was to revise the concept of animal gaze, extremely popular in animal studies in recent years. Zoonekrographies are an attempt to restore the death of the animal. I discussed in this part the philosophical voices about the difference between the death of the human and the death of the animal. I analyzed the function of pet cemeteries, and I introduced the myth of the return of the animal, which, in various forms, reflects the condition of the human-animal relationship. The study analyzed a variety of sources: literature, video, tv shows, advertising and graphic. The taken analysis were mostly inspired by thinkers such as Jacques Derrida, Bruno Latour, Cary Wolfe, Donna Haraway, Erica Fudge, Yi-Fu Tuan, Sarah Ahmed

Artykuł został opublikowany w materiałach konferencyjnych: Stare i nowe w bibliotece. Współpraca czy konkurencja. Konferencja Biblioteki Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego, 3-5 VI 2009, ŁódźTraditional libraries always collect, catalogue, store and circulate printed holdings. Nowadays the main functions of library, especially scientific library, change a little. This modern institution also adopts media, such as: microforms, multimedia and digital media. It also look for new manners of providing information, although its own collections must be the most important source of knowledge. The Library of the University of Łódź was found in 1945. It is one of the scientific libraries in Poland that can connect traditional and modern methods of work. It numbers about 2 million volumes. There is “Tygodnik Ilustrowany” among them. The way in which this periodical is collected, stored and preparated shows the connection old, traditional methods with modern ones. “IT” was microfilmed, digitalized and put on CD. The last stage is moving it to digital library
