    Picosecond time scale imaging of mechanical contacts

    By means of an ultrafast opto-acoustic technique we study the nanoindentation of thin chromium films on sapphire substrates using a ceramic ball bearing. Acoustic pulses at 40 GHz returning from the film–indenter interface allow the film indentation profiles to be probed to sub-nanometer resolution over contact areas 25 lm in radius. The deformation of the films during loading is hereby revealed. Furthermore, thermal wave imaging of the contact at megahertz frequencies is simultaneously achieved

    Mapping the band structure of a surface phononic crystal

    We map the band structure of surface acoustic modes of a periodic array of copper lines embedded in a SiO2 film on a silicon substrate by means of the laser-induced transient grating technique. A detailed map of the lowest sheet of the ω(k) surface and partial maps of two higher-order sheets are obtained. We discuss the topology of the ω(k) surface and explain how it arises from the Rayleigh and Sezawa modes of the film/substrate system. In the vicinity of the bandgap formed at the Brillouin zone boundary, the first and second dispersion sheets take the form of a saddle and a bowl, respectively, in agreement with a weak perturbation model. The shape of the third dispersion sheet, however, appears to defy expectations based on the perturbation approach. In particular, it contains minima located off the symmetry directions, which implies the existence of zero group velocity modes with an obliquely directed wavevector.United States.     Experimental assessment of skull aberration and transmission loss at 270 kHz for focused ultrasound stimulation of the primary visual cortex

    Transcranial focused ultrasound is a rapidly emerging method for non-invasive neuromodulation and stimulation. However, the skull causes a significant acoustic barrier and can reduce the focal intensity and alter the position and shape of the focus compared to free-field. In this study, the insertion loss and focal distortion due to the skull bone were quantified using three ex vivo human skulls and a focused ultrasound transducer operating at 270 kHz targeted on the approximate positions of the left and right primary visual cortex. Compared to free-field, the average insertion loss was -9.8 dB (± 2.2 dB), while the average focal shift was 1.7 mm (± 0.56 mm) in the lateral direction and 2.8 mm (±4.2 mm) in the axial direction. Overall, the acoustic aberrations were small compared to the size of the focal volume, meaning effective stimulation at this frequency can likely be achieved without patient-specific targeting. However, the insertion loss was significant and should be considered when selecting the target focal intensity for human studies

    Homeless drug users' awareness and risk perception of peer "Take Home Naloxone" use – a qualitative study

    BACKGROUND Peer use of take home naloxone has the potential to reduce drug related deaths. There appears to be a paucity of research amongst homeless drug users on the topic. This study explores the acceptability and potential risk of peer use of naloxone amongst homeless drug users. From the findings the most feasible model for future treatment provision is suggested. METHODS In depth face-to-face interviews conducted in one primary care centre and two voluntary organisation centres providing services to homeless drug users in a large UK cosmopolitan city. Interviews recorded, transcribed and analysed thematically by framework techniques. RESULTS Homeless people recognise signs of a heroin overdose and many are prepared to take responsibility to give naloxone, providing prior training and support is provided. Previous reports of the theoretical potential for abuse and malicious use may have been overplayed. CONCLUSION There is insufficient evidence to recommend providing "over the counter" take home naloxone" to UK homeless injecting drug users. However a programme of peer use of take home naloxone amongst homeless drug users could be feasible providing prior training is provided. Peer education within a health promotion framework will optimise success as current professionally led health promotion initiatives are failing to have a positive impact amongst homeless drug users

    Chaotic properties of quantum many-body systems in the thermodynamic limit

    By using numerical simulations, we investigate the dynamics of a quantum system of interacting bosons. We find an increase of properly defined mixing properties when the number of particles increases at constant density or the interaction strength drives the system away from integrability. A correspondence with the dynamical chaoticity of an associated cc-number system is then used to infer properties of the quantum system in the thermodynamic limit.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, 4 postscript figures included with psfig; Completely restructured version with new results on mixing properties added

    A survey for water maser emission towards planetary nebulae. New detection in IRAS 17347-3139

    We report on a water maser survey towards a sample of 27 planetary nebulae (PNe) using the Robledo de Chavela and Medicina single-dish antennas, as well as the Very Large Array (VLA). Two detections have been obtained: the already known water maser emission in K 3-35, and a new cluster of masers in IRAS 17347-3139. This low rate of detections is compatible with the short life-time of water molecules in PNe (~100 yr). The water maser cluster at IRAS 17347-3139 are distributed on a ellipse of size ~ 0.2" x 0.1", spatially associated with compact 1.3 cm continuum emission (simultaneously observed with the VLA). From archive VLA continuum data at 4.9, 8.4, and 14.9 GHz, a spectral index alpha = 0.76 +- 0.03 is derived for this radio source, which is consistent with either a partially optically thick ionized region or with an ionized wind. However, the latter scenario can be ruled out on mass-loss considerations, thus indicating that this source is probably a young PN. The spatial distribution and the radial velocities of the water masers are suggestive of a rotating and expanding maser ring, tracing the innermost regions of a torus formed at the end of the AGB phase. Given that the 1.3 cm continuum emission peak is located near one of the tips of the major axis of the ellipse of masers, we speculate on a possible binary nature of IRAS 17347-3139, where the radio continuum emission could belong to one of the components and the water masers would be associated with a companion.Comment: Accepted by The Astrophysical Journal. 25 pages, 6 figure
