    Ion cyclotron resonance studies of radiative and dissociative electron attachment processes at low pressures

    Ion cyclotron resonance spectroscopy is used to measure nondissociative electron attachment rate constants for C6F6 (perfluorobenzene), C7F8 (perfluorotoluene), c-C4F8 (perfluorocyclobutane), and C7F14 (perfluoromethylcyclohexane) at low pressure (<10−6 Torr). Infrared emission is assumed to stabilize excited species leading to long-lived molecular negative ions. Combining the present data with negative ion lifetimes measured at low pressures by time-of-flight methods and electron attachment rates measured at high pressures in swarm experiments allows estimates of radiative lifetimes to be made. These all fall in the range from 0.4 to 1.5 msec, which are typical of infrared radiative lifetimes. Data are also presented for dissociative electron attachment to CCl4, where the rate limiting step is shown to be thermalization of the electron energy distribution. A number of different buffer gases are examined and the ion cyclotron resonance results extrapolate to yield the attachment rate measured in high pressure swarm experiments

    Process-specific cues for recruitment in sedimentary environments: Geochemical signals?

    The most biologically and geochemically active marine sediments are characterized by steep chemical gradients within the top centimeters of sediment (Berner, 1980). A common feature of these environments is disruptions of surface sediments by both physical and biotic forces. Growth and mortality rates for new recruits are affected by many of these surface perturbations. At the same time, these disturbances also impose a discontinuity in concentration across the sediment-water interface, and accordingly, a change in surface chemistry. In this paper we present evidence that the cue used by juveniles to distinguish between recently disturbed and undisturbed surfaces may be disruption of geochemical gradients that are typical of nearshore benthic systems. New juveniles exposed to ammonium concentrations typical of disturbed surface sediments exhibit behaviors consistent with rejection of the habitat. Conversely, new juveniles placed onto sediments containing ammonium levels typical of undisturbed surficial sediments rapidly initiate burrowing activity, a sign of acceptability. We also present a numerical model, which assesses the dynamics of small-scale chemical shifts that accompany sediment disruption, to determine (a) what is the magnitude of surface chemistry changes associated with disturbance (i.e. what is the signal strength)? and (b) what are the spatial and temporal scales associated with the return to the undisturbed condition ( recovery )? Model results show that the signal strength, and the return to acceptable conditions, are strongly influenced by the initial gradient. Model predictions of the time required to recover indicate that times to recovery are longer than the interval between disturbance events, but are of the same temporal scale (minutes to hours). Thus, our results suggest that the dynamics of surficial gradients provide a strong signal over appropriate time scales that may reveal the intensity of disturbance and the likelihood of mortality for juveniles. As such, transport-reaction processes which govern porewater concentrations in surficial sediments may also play a role in recruitment processes

    The Obliteration of Truth by Management: Badiou, St. Paul and the Question of Economic Managerialism in Education

    This paper considers the questions that Badiou’s theory of the subject poses to cultures of economic managerialism within education. His argument that radical change is possible, for people and the situations they inhabit, provides a stark challenge to the stifling nature of much current educational climate. In 'Saint Paul: The Foundation of Universalism', Badiou describes the current universalism of capitalism, monetary homogeneity and the rule of the count. Badiou argues that the politics of identity are all too easily subsumed by the prerogatives of the marketplace and unable to present, therefore, a critique of the status quo. These processes are, he argues, without the potential for truth. What are the implications of Badiou’s claim that education is the arranging of ‘the forms of knowledge in such a way that truth may come to pierce a hole in them’ (Badiou, 2005, p. 9)? In this paper, I argue that Badiou’s theory opens up space for a kind of thinking about education that resists its colonisation by cultures of management and marketisation and leads educationalists to consider the emancipatory potential of education in a new light

    Disturbance size and frequency mediate the coexistence of benthic spatial competitors.

    Disturbance plays a key role in structuring community dynamics and is central to conservation and natural resource management. However, ecologists continue to debate the importance of disturbance for species coexistence and biodiversity. Such disagreements may arise in part because few studies have examined variation across multiple dimensions of disturbance (e.g., size, frequency) and how the effects of disturbance may depend on species attributes (e.g., competitiveness, dispersal ability). In light of this gap in understanding and accelerating changes to disturbance regimes worldwide, we used spatial population models to explore how disturbance size and frequency interact with species attributes to affect coexistence between seagrass (Zostera marina) and colonial burrowing shrimp (Neotrypaea californiensis) that compete for benthic space in estuaries throughout the west coast of North America. By simulating population dynamics under a range of ecologically relevant disturbance regimes, we discovered that intermediate disturbance (approximately 9-23% of landscape area per year) to short-dispersing, competitively dominant seagrass can foster long-term stable coexistence with broad-dispersing, competitively inferior burrowing shrimp via the spatial storage effect. When holding the total extent of disturbance constant, the individual size and annual frequency of disturbance altered landscape spatial patterns and mediated the dominance and evenness of competitors. Many small disturbances favored short-dispersing seagrass by hastening recolonization, whereas fewer large disturbances benefited rapidly colonizing burrowing shrimp by creating temporary refugia from competition. As a result, large, infrequent disturbances generally improved the strength and stability of coexistence relative to small, frequent disturbances. Regardless of disturbance size or frequency, the dispersal ability of the superior competitor (seagrass), the competitive ability of the inferior competitor (burrowing shrimp), and the reproduction and survival of both species strongly influenced population abundances and coexistence. Our results show that disturbance size and frequency can promote or constrain coexistence by altering the duration of time over which inferior competitors can escape competitive exclusion, particularly when colonization depends on the spatial pattern of disturbance due to dispersal traits. For coastal managers and conservation practitioners, our findings indicate that reducing particularly large disturbances may help conserve globally imperiled seagrass meadows and control burrowing shrimp colonies that can threaten the viability of oyster aquaculture

    Electron Capture Dissociation Mass Spectrometry of Tyrosine Nitrated Peptides

    In vivo protein nitration is associated with many disease conditions that involve oxidative stress and inflammatory response. The modification involves addition of a nitro group at the position ortho to the phenol group of tyrosine to give 3-nitrotyrosine. To understand the mechanisms and consequences of protein nitration, it is necessary to develop methods for identification of nitrotyrosine-containing proteins and localization of the sites of modification.Here, we have investigated the electron capture dissociation (ECD) and collision-induced association (CID) behavior of 3-nitrotyrosine-containing peptides. The presence of nitration did not affect the CID behavior of the peptides. For the doubly-charged peptides, addition of nitration severely inhibited the production of ECD sequence fragments. However, ECD of the triply-charged nitrated peptides resulted in some singly-charged sequence fragments. ECD of the nitrated peptides is characterized by multiple losses of small neutral species including hydroxyl radicals, water and ammonia. The origin of the neutral losses has been investigated by use of activated ion (AI) ECD. Loss of ammonia appears to be the result of non-covalent interactions between the nitro group and protonated lysine side-chains

    Modal Ω-Logic: Automata, Neo-Logicism, and Set-Theoretic Realism

    This essay examines the philosophical significance of Ω\Omega-logic in Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory with choice (ZFC). The duality between coalgebra and algebra permits Boolean-valued algebraic models of ZFC to be interpreted as coalgebras. The modal profile of Ω\Omega-logical validity can then be countenanced within a coalgebraic logic, and Ω\Omega-logical validity can be defined via deterministic automata. I argue that the philosophical significance of the foregoing is two-fold. First, because the epistemic and modal profiles of Ω\Omega-logical validity correspond to those of second-order logical consequence, Ω\Omega-logical validity is genuinely logical, and thus vindicates a neo-logicist conception of mathematical truth in the set-theoretic multiverse. Second, the foregoing provides a modal-computational account of the interpretation of mathematical vocabulary, adducing in favor of a realist conception of the cumulative hierarchy of sets

    Genomic analysis of human lung fibroblasts exposed to vanadium pentoxide to identify candidate genes for occupational bronchitis

    BACKGROUND: Exposure to vanadium pentoxide (V(2)O(5)) is a cause of occupational bronchitis. We evaluated gene expression profiles in cultured human lung fibroblasts exposed to V(2)O(5 )in vitro in order to identify candidate genes that could play a role in inflammation, fibrosis, and repair during the pathogenesis of V(2)O(5)-induced bronchitis. METHODS: Normal human lung fibroblasts were exposed to V(2)O(5 )in a time course experiment. Gene expression was measured at various time points over a 24 hr period using the Affymetrix Human Genome U133A 2.0 Array. Selected genes that were significantly changed in the microarray experiment were validated by RT-PCR. RESULTS: V(2)O(5 )altered more than 1,400 genes, of which ~300 were induced while >1,100 genes were suppressed. Gene ontology categories (GO) categories unique to induced genes included inflammatory response and immune response, while GO catogories unique to suppressed genes included ubiquitin cycle and cell cycle. A dozen genes were validated by RT-PCR, including growth factors (HBEGF, VEGF, CTGF), chemokines (IL8, CXCL9, CXCL10), oxidative stress response genes (SOD2, PIPOX, OXR1), and DNA-binding proteins (GAS1, STAT1). CONCLUSION: Our study identified a variety of genes that could play pivotal roles in inflammation, fibrosis and repair during V(2)O(5)-induced bronchitis. The induction of genes that mediate inflammation and immune responses, as well as suppression of genes involved in growth arrest appear to be important to the lung fibrotic reaction to V(2)O(5)

    Towards a ‘Long View’: Historical Perspectives on the Scaling and Replication of Social Ventures

    Social ventures are now widely regarded as playing an essential role in addressing persistent and pervasive societal challenges. This insight has prompted an active search for readily-scaleable and replicable business models. However, relatively little consideration has been given to the longer-term growth and performance of these hybrid organizational forms. This paper examines how historically-informed research might enhance our understanding of growth processes. It considers the conceptualization of organizational growth in social ventures and the relevance of prevailing constructs. The explanatory potential of ‘long view’ approaches examined by applying three constructs, opportunity recognition, entrepreneurial adjustment, and institutional structure, in a comparative historical analysis of two British social ventures
