    Weighted and metric surface networks - new insights and an interactive application for their generalisation in Tcl/Tk

    The idea of characterising the different forms of natural topographic surfaces by a topologicalmodel based on their fundamental surface features has attracted many proposals. In this paper, adetailed discussion and new proposals on various issues related to the concept, generation, andvisualisation of two graph theoretic based surface topology data structures ? Weighted SurfaceNetworks and their improved version, Metric Surface Networks - are presented. Also presented isan interactive Tcl/Tk application called Surface Topology Toolkit, which has been developed tosupport the discussion on aspects of their generalisation and visualisation. The highlight of theSurface Topology Toolkit is the utility to allow arbitrary contraction unlike the usual verteximportance based criterion. This paper proposes that effective automated surface topologymodelling based on these surface networks requires (a) further research in the development of?computing? algorithms that will accurately locate critical surface points, be able to establishtopological links, and also check topological consistency, (b) transforming their 2D straight linegraph like appearance to 3D to improve visualisation and contraction, and (c) assessment and userawarenessabout the effects of each type of contraction criterion on the topography

    The Apollo 16 Mission was the sixteenth in a series of flights using Apollo flight hardware and included the fifth lunar landing of the Apollo Program. The Apollo 16 Mission utilized CSM 113 which was equipped with SPS Engine S/N 66 (Injector S/N 137). The engine configuration and expected performance characteristics are presented. Since previous flight results of the SPS have consistently shown the existence of a negative mixture ratio shift, SPS Engine S/N 66 was reorificed to increase the mixture ratio for this mission. The propellant unbalance for the two major engine firings is compared with the predicted unbalance. Although the unbalance at the end of the TEI burn is significantly different than the predicted unbalance, the propellant mixture ratio was well within limits. The SPS performed six burns during the mission, with a total burn duration of 575.3 seconds. The ignition time, burn duration and velocity gain for each of the six SPS burns are reported

    Mobility of Dislocations in Aluminum

    The velocities of individual dislocations of edge and mixed types in pure aluminum single crystals were determined as a function of applied‐resolved shear stress and temperature. The dislocation velocities were determined from measurements of the displacements of individual dislocations produced by stress pulses of known duration. The Berg‐Barrett x‐ray technique was employed to observe the dislocations, and stress pulses of 15 to 108 ÎŒsec duration were applied by propagating torsional waves along the axes of [111]‐oriented cylindrical crystals. Resolved shear stresses up to 16×10^6 dynes∕cm^2 were applied at temperatures ranging from −150° to +70°C, and dislocation velocities were found to vary from 10 to 2800 cm∕sec over these ranges of stress and temperature. The experimental conditions were such that the dislocation velocities were not significantly influenced by impurities, dislocation curvature, dislocation‐dislocation interactions, or long‐range internal stress fields in the crystals. The velocity of dislocations is found to be linearly proportional to the applied‐resolved shear stress, and to decrease with increasing temperature. Qualitative comparison of these results with existing theories leads to the conclusion that the mobility of individual dislocations in pure aluminum is governed by dislocation‐phonon interactions. The phonon‐viscosity theory of dislocation mobility can be brought into agreement with the experimental results by reasonable choices of the values of certain constants appearing in the theory

    Troubling Vulnerability: Designing with LGBT Young People's Ambivalence Towards Hate Crime Reporting

    HCI is increasingly working with ?vulnerable? people yet there is a danger that the label of vulnerability can alienate and stigmatize the people such work aims to support. We report our study investigating the application of interaction design to increase rates of hate crime reporting amongst Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender young people. During design-led workshops participants expressed ambivalence towards reporting. While recognizing their exposure to hate crime they simultaneously rejected ascription as victim as implied in the act of reporting. We used visual communication design to depict the young people?s ambivalent identities and contribute insights on how these fail and succeed to account for the intersectional, fluid and emergent nature of LGBT identities through the design research process. We argue that by producing ambiguous designed texts, alongside conventional qualitative data, we ?trouble? our design research narratives as a tactic to disrupt static and reductive understandings of vulnerability within HCI
