    Emergent properties in optically bound matter

    Sub-micron particles have been observed to spontaneously form regular two-dimensional structures in counterpropagating evanescent laser fields. We show that collective properties of large numbers of optically-trapped particles can be qualitatively different to the properties of small numbers. This is demonstrated both with a computer model and with experimental results. As the number of particles in the structure is increased, optical binding forces can be sufficiently large to overcome the optical landscape imposed by the interference fringes of the laser beams and impose a different, competing structure

    Multi-technique characterisation of MOVPE-grown GaAs on Si

    The heterogeneous integration of III-V materials on a Si CMOS platform offers tremendous prospects for future high speed and low power logic applications. That said this integration generates immense scientific and technological challenges. In this work multi-technique characterisation is used to investigate properties of GaAs layers grown by Metal-Organic Vapour Phase Epitaxy (MOVPE) on Si substrates - (100) with 4⁰ offset towards - under various growth conditions. This being a crucial first step towards the production of III-V template layers with a relatively lower density of defects for selective epitaxial overgrowth of device quality material. The optical and structural properties of heteroepitaxial GaAs are first investigated by micro-Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence and reflectance measurements. High-resolution X-ray diffraction (HR-XRD) is used to investigate structural properties. Advanced XRD techniques, including double-axis diffraction and X-ray crystallographic mapping are used to evaluate degrees of relaxation and distribution of the grain orientations in the epilayers, respectively. Results obtained from the different methodologies are compared in an attempt to understand growth kinetics of the materials system. The GaAs overlayer grown with annealing at 735⁰C following As predeposition at 500⁰C shows the best crystallinity. Close inspection confirms the growth of epitaxial GaAs preferentially oriented along (100) embedded in a highly-textured polycrystalline structure

    Sedimentation-consolidation of a double porosity material

    This paper studies the sedimentation-consolidation of a double porosity material, such as lumpy clay. Large displacements and finite strains are accounted for in a multidimensional setting. Fundamental equations are derived using a phenomenological approach and non-equilibrium thermodynamics, as set out by Coussy [Coussy, Poromechanics, Wiley, Chichester, 2004]. These equations particularise to three non-linear partial differential equations in one dimensional context. Numerical implementation in a finite element code is currently being undertaken

    Extent of the Ross Orogen in Antarctica: new data from DSDP 270 and Iselin Bank

    The Ross Sea is bordered by the Late Precambrian–Cambrian Ross–Delamerian Orogen of East Antarctica and the more Pacific-ward Ordovician–Silurian Lachlan–Tuhua–Robertson Bay–Swanson Orogen. A calcsilicate gneiss from Deep Sea Drilling Project 270 drill hole in the central Ross Sea, Antarctica, gives a U-Pb titanite age of 437 ± 6 Ma (2σ). This age of high-grade metamorphism is too young for typical Ross Orogen. Based on this age, and on lithology, we propose a provisional correlation with the Early Palaeozoic Lachlan–Tuhua–Robertson Bay–Swanson Orogen, and possibly the Bowers Terrane of northern Victoria Land. A metamorphosed porphyritic rhyolite dredged from the Iselin Bank, northern Ross Sea, gives a U-Pb zircon age of 545 ± 32 Ma (2σ). The U-Pb age, petrochemistry, Ar-Ar K-feldspar dating, and Sr and Nd isotopic ratios indicate a correlation with Late Proterozoic–Cambrian igneous protoliths of the Ross Orogen. If the Iselin Bank rhyolite is not ice-rafted debris, then it represents a further intriguing occurrence of Ross basement found outside the main Ross–Delamerian Orogen

    Serum antioxidants as predictors of the adult respiratory distress syndrome in septic patients

    Adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) can develop as a complication of various disorders, including sepsis, but it has not been possible to identify which of the patients at risk will develop this serious disorder. We have investigated the ability of six markers, measured sequentially in blood, to predict development of ARDS in 26 patients with sepsis. At the initial diagnosis of sepsis (6-24 h before the development of ARDS), serum manganese superoxide dismutase concentration and catalase activity were higher in the 6 patients who subsequently developed ARDS than in 20 patients who did not develop ARDS. These changes in antioxidant enzymes predicted the development of ARDS in septic patients with the same sensitivity, specificity, and efficiency as simultaneous assessments of serum lactate dehydrogenase activity and factor VIII concentration. By contrast, serum glutathione peroxidase activity and α1Pi-elastase complex concentration did not differ at the initial diagnosis of sepsis between patients who did and did not subsequently develop ARDS, and were not as effective in predicting the development of ARDS. Measurement of manganese superoxide dismutase and catalase, in addition to the other markers, should facilitate identification of patients at highest risk of ARDS and allow prospective treatment

    Contribution of neutral processes to the assembly of gut microbial communities in the zebrafish over host development

    Despite their importance to host health and development, the communities of microorganisms associated with humans and other animals are characterized by a large degree of unexplained variation across individual hosts. The processes that drive such inter-individual variation are not well understood. To address this, we surveyed the microbial communities associated with the intestine of the zebrafish, Danio rerio, over developmental time. We compared our observations of community composition and distribution across hosts with that predicted by a neutral assembly model, which assumes that community assembly is driven solely by chance and dispersal. We found that as hosts develop from larvae to adults, the fit of the model to observed microbial distributions decreases, suggesting that the relative importance of non-neutral processes, such as microbe-microbe interactions, active dispersal, or selection by the host, increases as hosts mature. We also observed that taxa which depart in their distributions from the neutral prediction form ecologically distinct sub-groups, which are phylogenetically clustered with respect to the full metacommunity. These results demonstrate that neutral processes are sufficient to generate substantial variation in microbiota composition across individual hosts, and suggest that potentially unique or important taxa may be identified by their divergence from neutral distributions

    Teleparallel Equivalent of Non-Abelian Kaluza-Klein Theory

    Based on the equivalence between a gauge theory for the translation group and general relativity, a teleparallel version of the non-abelian Kaluza-Klein theory is constructed. In this theory, only the fiber-space turns out to be higher-dimensional, spacetime being kept always four-dimensional. The resulting model is a gauge theory that unifies, in the Kaluza-Klein sense, gravitational and gauge fields. In contrast to the ordinary Kaluza-Klein models, this theory defines a natural length-scale for the compact sub-manifold of the fiber space, which is shown to be of the order of the Planck length.Comment: Revtex4, 7 pages, no figures, to appear in Phys.     The composition of the zebrafish intestinal microbial community varies across development

    The assembly of resident microbial communities is an important event in animal development; however, the extent to which this process mirrors the developmental programs of host tissues is unknown. Here we surveyed the intestinal bacteria at key developmental time points in a sibling group of 135 individuals of a model vertebrate, the zebrafish (Danio rerio). Our survey revealed stage-specific signatures in the intestinal microbiota and extensive interindividual variation, even within the same developmental stage. Microbial community shifts were apparent during periods of constant diet and environmental conditions, as well as in concert with dietary and environmental change. Interindividual variation in the intestinal microbiota increased with age, as did the difference between the intestinal microbiota and microbes in the surrounding environment. Our results indicate that zebrafish intestinal microbiota assemble into distinct communities throughout development, and that these communities are increasingly different from the surrounding environment and from one another
