This paper takes a preliminary step in understanding the supply side of the Hong Kong market by investigating the construction and related industries. After taking into consideration of the unusual public expenditure, the construction industry seems to be “normal” in international standard.     Bioluminescence imaging reveals inhibition of tumor cell proliferation by Alzheimer's amyloid β protein

    Background: Cancer and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are two seemingly distinct diseases and rarely occur simultaneously in patients. To explore molecular determinants differentiating pathogenic routes towards AD or cancer, we investigate the role of amyloid β protein (Aβ) on multiple tumor cell lines that are stably expressing luciferase (human glioblastoma U87; human breast adenocarcinoma MDA-MB231; and mouse melanoma B16F). Results: Quantification of the photons emitted from the MDA-MB231 or B16F cells revealed a significant inhibition of cell proliferation by the conditioning media (CM) derived from amyloid precursor protein (APP) over-expressing cells. The inhibition of U87 cells was observed only after the media was conditioned for longer than 2 days with APP over-expressing cells. Conclusion: Our results suggest that Aβ plays an inhibitory role in tumor cell proliferation; this effect could depend on the type of tumor cells and amount of Aβ

    Bioluminescence Imaging of Heme Oxygenase-1 Upregulation in the Gua Sha Procedure

    Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese folk therapy that employs skin scraping to cause subcutaneous microvascular blood extravasation and bruises. The protocol for bioluminescent optical imaging of HO-1-luciferase transgenic mice reported in this manuscript provides a rapid in vivo assay of the upregulation of the heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) gene expression in response to the Gua Sha procedure. HO-1 has long been known to provide cytoprotection against oxidative stress. The upregulation of HO-1, assessed by the bioluminescence output, is thought to represent an antioxidative response to circulating hemoglobin products released by Gua Sha. Gua Sha was administered by repeated strokes of a smooth spoon edge over lubricated skin on the back or other targeted body part of the transgenic mouse until petechiae (splinter hemorrhages) or ecchymosis (bruises) indicative of extravasation of blood from subcutaneous capillaries was observed. After Gua Sha, bioluminescence imaging sessions were carried out daily for several days to follow the dynamics of HO-1 expression in multiple internal organs

    Functional magnetic resonance imaging providing the brain effect mechanism of acupuncture and moxibustion treatment for depression

    The efficacy of acupuncture and moxibustion in the treatment of depression has been fully recognized internationally. However, its central mechanism is still not developed into a unified standard, and it is generally believed that the central mechanism is regulation of the cortical striatum thalamic neural pathway of the limbic system. In recent years, some scholars have applied functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study the central mechanism and the associated brain effects of acupuncture and moxibustion treatment for depression. This study reviews the acupuncture and moxibustion treatment of depression from two aspects: (1) fMRI study of the brain function related to the acupuncture treatment of depression: different acupuncture and moxibustion methods are summarized, the fMRI technique is elaborately explained, and the results of fMRI study of the effects of acupuncture are analyzed in detail, and (2) fMRI associated “brain functional network” effects of acupuncture and moxibustion on depression, including the effects on the hippocampus, the amygdala, the cingulate gyrus, the frontal lobe, the temporal lobe, and other brain regions. The study of the effects of acupuncture on brain imaging is not adequately developed and still needs further improvement and development. The brain function networks associated with the acupuncture treatment of depression have not yet been adequately developed to provide a scientific and standardized mechanism of the effects of acupuncture. For this purpose, this study analyzes in-depth the clinical studies on the treatment of anxiety and depression by acupuncture and moxibustion, by depicting how the employment of fMRI technology provides significant imaging changes in the brain regions. Therefore, the study also provides a reference for future clinical research on the treatment of anxiety and depression

    New Findings, Classification and Long-Term Follow-Up Study Based on MRI Characterization of Brainstem Encephalitis Induced by Enterovirus 71

    Background To report the diversity of MRI features of brainstem encephalitis (BE) induced by Enterovirus 71. This is supported by implementation and testing of our new classification scheme in order to improve the diagnostic level on this specific disease. Methods Neuroimaging of 91 pediatric patients who got EV71 related BE were hospitalized between March, 2010 to October, 2012, were analyzed retrospectively. All patients underwent pre- and post-contrast MRI scan. Thereafter, 31 patients were randomly called back for follow-up MRI study during December 2013 to August 2014. The MRI signal patterns of BE primary lesion were analyzed and classified according to MR signal alteration at various disease stages. Findings in fatal and non-fatal cases were compared, and according to the MRI scan time point during the course of this disease, the patients’ conditions were classified as 1) acute stage, 2) convalescence stage, 3) post mortem stage, and 4) long term follow-up study. Results 103 patients were identified. 11 patients did not undergo MRI, as they died within 48 hours. One patient died on 14th day without MR imaging. 2 patients had postmortem MRI. Medical records and imaging were reviewed in the 91 patients, aged 4 months to 12 years, and two cadavers who have had MRI scan. At acute stage: the most frequent pattern (40 patients) was foci of prolonged T1 and T2 signal, with (15) or without (25) contrast enhancement. We observed a novel pattern in 4 patients having foci of low signal intensity on T2WI, with contrast enhancement. Another pattern in 10 patients having foci of contrast enhancement without abnormalities in T1WI or T2WI weighted images. Based on 2 cases, the entire medulla and pons had prolonged T1 and T2 signal, and 2 of our postmortem cases demonstrated the same pattern. At convalescence stage, the pattern observed in 4 patients was foci of prolonged T1 and T2 signal without contrast enhancement. Follow-up MR study of 31 cases showed normal in 26 cases, and demonstrated foci of prolonged T1 and T2 signal with hyper-intensity on FLAIR in 3 cases, or of prolonged T1 and T2 signal with hypo-intensity on FLAIR in 2 cases. Most importantly, MR findings of each case were thoroughly investigated and classified according to phases and MRI signal alteration. Conclusions This study has provided enhanced and useful information for the MRI features of BE induced by EV71, apart from common practice established by previous reports. In addition, a classification scheme that summarizes all types of features based on the MRI signal at the four different stages of the disease would be helpful to improve the diagnostic level

    Smoothed particle hydrodynamics method for free surface flow based on MPI parallel computing

    In the field of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is very suitable for simulating problems with large deformation, free surface flow and other types of flow scenarios. However, traditional smoothed particle hydrodynamics methods suffer from the problem of high computation complexity, which constrains their application in scenarios with accuracy requirements. DualSPHysics is an excellent smoothed particle hydrodynamics software proposed in academia. Based on this tool, this paper presents a largescale parallel smoothed particle hydrodynamics framework: parallelDualSPHysics, which can solve the simulation of large-scale free surface flow. First, an efficient domain decomposition algorithm is proposed. And the data structure of DualSPHysics in a parallel framework is reshaped. Secondly, we proposed a strategy of overlapping computation and communication to the parallel particle interaction and particle update module, which greatly improves the parallel efficiency of the smoothed particle hydrodynamics method. Finally, we also added the pre-processing and post-processing modules to enable parallelDualSPHysics to run in modern high performance computers. In addition, a thorough evaluation shows that the 3 to 120 million particles tested can still maintain more than 90% computing efficiency, which demonstrates that the parallel strategy can achieve superior parallel efficiency

    Pharmacophore-based molecular docking of usnic acid derivatives to discover anti-viral drugs against influenza A virus

    For decades, influenza virus infection has been a serious health concern due to seasonal epidemics and pandemics, and it is continuing on the rise today, yet there is no gold-standard medication available for treating influenza viral infection. As a result, better influenza medicine is necessary to prevent illness. The purpose of this work was to investigate how effective usnic acid derivatives were as antiviral medications against the influenza virus in a computational approach. To discover the prospective medication as an anti-influenza agent, we employed pharmacophore-based molecular docking, ADMET, and drug-likeness studies, CYP isoform analysis and MD simulation approaches. Using pharmacophore filtering processes, twenty-three (23) usnic acid derivatives were acquired from an in-house database of 340 usnic acid derivatives. A docking simulation on the Influenza A H1N1 polymerase resulted in four molecules with a high affinity for the protein. The pharmacokinetics and drug-likeness predictions yielded two hit compounds, which were then subjected to cytochrome P450 enzyme screening to provide the lead molecule, denoted as compound-4. In addition, MD simulation of lead compound (Compound-4) was performed to verify the stability of the docked complex and the binding posture acquired in docking experiments. The findings revealed that compound-4 is a promising option for antiviral treatment of influenza illness in the future
