European climate finance: securing the best return. Bruegel Policy Brief ISSUE 2015/03, 11 September 2015

Combating climate change is perhaps the most formidable public policy challenge of our times. Unmitigated climate change will be irreversible. It will place significant costs on future generations, and expose them to unexplored risks. To mitigate climate change, global coordination is indispensable. European Union citizens consider climate change a central problem. The EU and its member states have therefore put in place signficant and costly climate mitigation policies

Effective Integration of Gamification and Learning Management Systems for Creating Gamified Learning Arrangements

[EN] This paper describes ongoing research concerning the effective development of gamified learning arrangements. It shows the necessity for more standardization of the design of such arrangements and reveals potential ways in order to support this need with the use of a domain-specific modeling language. The latter is used by lecturers for designing and exchanging models of gamified learning arrangements and provides the possibility to automatically generate a working learning management system using a language specific generator. The generated learning management system can directly be used by learners and furthermore allows to track the individual learning process for both learners and lecturers.Bartel, A.; Hagel, G.; Wolff, C. Emendo – A Toolchain for Creating Gamified Learning Arrangements for Online Learning Settings

[EN] This contribution describes the Emendo toolchain which enables the effective creation and implementation of gamified learning arrangements for online learning settings based on the domain-specific modeling approach. The components of Emendo are a domain-specific modeling language, a generator which transforms models based on the language into source code as well as the embedding of the latter in a learning management system. Scenarios for the usage of Emendo for teaching and learning are presented with respect to the functionalities of the toolchain. In addition, a qualitative evaluation concerning Emendo’s goals, concept and insights on the results is given. The evaluation shows that Emendo reaches high acceptance for teaching purposes and can serve as a promising means for the digitisation of teaching and learning.http://ocs.editorial.upv.es/index.php/HEAD/HEAD18Bartel, A.; Hagel, G.; Wolff, C. Information Processing of Foreign Exchange News: Extending the Overshooting Model to Include Qualitative Information from News Sentiment

In a globalized world, the volume of international trade is based on both import and export prices, thereby making a country\u27s economy highly dependent on exchange rates. In order to study exchange rate movements, one frequently exploits the so-called Dornbusch overshooting model. However, the model is controversial from a theoretical point of view: it presupposes the processing of information, though this is not directly reflected by the underlying variables. As a remedy, this paper investigates a potential cognitive bias by including textual news content, thus adjusting for information dissemination. As such, we perform a multivariate analysis to compare the classical overshooting model with an extended variant that includes news sentiment. Our results show that news has a substantial explanatory power of 11% of the exchange rate forecasting error variance. In addition, we also find statistical evidence that a shock in news sentiment may lead to overshooting

The day-of-invitation effect on participation in web-based studies

Several methods have been proposed to promote participation in web-based research. Here, we examine a technique that is available at no cost: Inviting respondents per e-mail on a particular day of the week. We base our reasoning on such a day-of-invitation effect upon theories on variations in mood and work performance over the week. We conducted five experiments with large and heterogeneous samples to find out whether such effects apply for response rate (i.e., visiting the first page of a study) and retention rate (i.e., completing the study) in web-based studies. We found evidence of a small but significant day-of-invitation effect. Response rate is high at the beginning of the workweek and falls to a low on Friday. Exploratory analyses showed that this decline is higher for employed (vs. nonemployed) persons. Effects on retention rate appear to follow a less straightforward pattern. We discuss possible mechanisms that might account for the day-of-invitation effect and recommend inviting participants on Monday or Tuesday. Panel discussion: Proposals for improving OCL

    Get PDF
During the panel session at the OCL workshop, the OCL community discussed, stimulated by short presentations by OCL experts, potential future extensions and improvements of the OCL. As such, this panel discussion continued the discussion that started at the OCL meeting in Aachen in 2013 and on which we reported in the proceedings of the last year's OCL workshop. This collaborative paper, to which each OCL expert contributed one section, summarises the panel discussion as well as describes the suggestions for further improvements in more detail.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
