How do you write about a feeling you do not understand? How do you organize what is purposefully messy? How can you name a ghost of something that you push into the world with your hands? In this thesis, I will explain my practice, form, and material as a way to illuminate my art, along with various readings and philosophies that I use to guide the work

Efficacy of Hypnosis on Dental Anxiety and Phobia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    Get PDF
Hypnosis is a commonly used therapy option in dentistry and medicine for fear and pain reduction. Nevertheless, it is viewed very critically, as there is still insufficient evidence for a treatment effect. Specific phobia of dental treatment and dental anxiety are prevalent conditions that can cause an oral health impairment. This paper critically reviews 19 clinical trials aimed at reducing dental anxiety and fear avoidance in adults, published in peer-reviewed journals between 1979 and 2021. The search identified 257 papers; 223 were selected after removing duplicates. A total of 188 articles were excluded after title and abstract evaluation; 35 full text articles were assessed for eligibility. Another 10 papers were discharged after full text evaluation, as these were case reports and questionnaires. Six papers were discharged due to the lack of a comparable scale to measure dental anxiety. The following treatment techniques were reviewed: various forms of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), relaxation training, benzodiazepine premedication, self-hypnosis by audio therapy, hypnotherapy, hypnosis, and nitrous oxide sedation. CBT delivered in a variety of formats, including one-session treatment, showed the most evidence for the efficacy of reducing anxiety. A wide heterogeneity of methods allowed only the inclusion of five studies to the performed meta-analysis, showing contrasting results for the application of hypnosis. The main reason for this issue is the great variety in methods used, making a distinct assessment of hypnotic interventions difficult. However, the results of the systematic review are promising in that hypnosis can also be regarded as powerful and successful method for anxiety reduction, while there are also studies with a small or even slightly negative effect. Therefore, further research is needed. Within the limitations of the current study, a more consistent use of methods to examine anxiety for hypnosis research is recommended

Effects of muscle fatigue on gait characteristics under single and dual-task conditions in young and older adults

    Get PDF
Muscle fatigue and dual-task walking (e.g., concurrent performance of a cognitive interference (CI) while walking) represent major fall risk factors in young and older adults. Thus, the objectives of this study were to examine the effects of muscle fatigue on gait characteristics under single and dual-task conditions in young and older adults and to determine the impact of muscle fatigue on dual-task costs while walking

Reliability and Validity of the Adapter COPE Scale with Deaf College Students

    Get PDF
The purpose of the current study was to investigate the reliability and validity of the Adapted Coping Operations Preference Enquiry (COPE) Scale with deaf college students. The Adapted COPE identifies15 strategies for managing stresors. 117 deaf college students from Gallaudet University, between the ages of 18 and 25, participated in the present study. When used with this sample, the majority of the Adapted COPE subscales evidenced high or moderate internal consistency reliability, except for the Mental Disengagement and Active Coping subscales. To investigate structural validity, principle component analysis was conducted utilizing quartimax rotation. Initial analyses retained 17 factors and failed to replicate the intended subscale structure of the measure. Post-hoc t-tests indicated that responses to the Original COPE by hearing participants and the Adapted COPE by deaf participants were largely similar, except for the Substance Use subscale, with significantly higher mean scores in the deaf sample. This suggests that the psychometric analyses of the original COPE scale indicate a need for additional restructuring of the measure

Spin Coulomb drag in the two-dimensional electron liquid

We calculate the spin-drag transresistivity ρ(T)\rho_{\uparrow \downarrow}(T) in a two-dimensional electron gas at temperature TT in the random phase approximation. In the low-temperature regime we show that, at variance with the three-dimensional low-temperature result [ρ(T)T2\rho_{\uparrow\downarrow}(T) \sim T^2], the spin transresistivity of a two-dimensional {\it spin unpolarized} electron gas has the form ρ(T)T2lnT\rho_{\uparrow\downarrow}(T) \sim T^2 \ln T. In the spin-polarized case the familiar form ρ(T)=AT2\rho_{\uparrow\downarrow}(T) =A T^2 is recovered, but the constant of proportionality AA diverges logarithmically as the spin-polarization tends to zero. In the high-temperature regime we obtain ρ(T)=(/e2)(π2Ry/kBT)\rho_{\uparrow \downarrow}(T) = -(\hbar / e^2) (\pi^2 Ry^* /k_B T) (where RyRy^* is the effective Rydberg energy) {\it independent} of the density. Again, this differs from the three-dimensional result, which has a logarithmic dependence on the density. Two important differences between the spin-drag transresistivity and the ordinary Coulomb drag transresistivity are pointed out: (i) The lnT\ln T singularity at low temperature is smaller, in the Coulomb drag case, by a factor e4kFde^{-4 k_Fd} where kFk_F is the Fermi wave vector and dd is the separation between the layers. (ii) The collective mode contribution to the spin-drag transresistivity is negligible at all temperatures. Moreover the spin drag effect is, for comparable parameters, larger than the ordinary Coulomb drag effect.Comment: 6 figures; various changes; version accepted for publicatio

Effects of a salsa dance training on balance and strength performance in older adults

Deficits in static and particularly dynamic postural control and force production have frequently been associated with an increased risk of falling in older adults.; The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of salsa dancing on measures of static/dynamic postural control and leg extensor power in seniors.; Twenty-eight healthy older adults were randomly assigned to an intervention group (INT, n = 14, age 71.6 ± 5.3 years) to conduct an 8-week progressive salsa dancing programme or a control group (CON, n = 14, age 68.9 ± 4.7 years). Static postural control was measured during one-legged stance on a balance platform and dynamic postural control was obtained while walking on an instrumented walkway. Leg extensor power was assessed during a countermovement jump on a force plate.; Programme compliance was excellent with participants of the INT group completing 92.5% of the dancing sessions. A tendency towards an improvement in the selected measures of static postural control was observed in the INT group as compared to the CON group. Significant group × test interactions were found for stride velocity, length and time. Post hoc analyses revealed significant increases in stride velocity and length, and concomitant decreases in stride time. However, salsa dancing did not have significant effects on various measures of gait variability and leg extensor power.; Salsa proved to be a safe and feasible exercise programme for older adults accompanied with a high adherence rate. Age-related deficits in measures of static and particularly dynamic postural control can be mitigated by salsa dancing in older adults. High physical activity and fitness/mobility levels of our participants could be responsible for the nonsignificant findings in gait variability and leg extensor power

A de novo variant in the bovine ADAMTSL4 gene in an Original Braunvieh calf with congenital cataract

    Get PDF
Inherited forms of cataract are a heterogeneous group of eye disorders known in livestock species. Clinicopathological analysis of a single case of impaired vision in a newborn Original Braunvieh calf revealed nuclear cataract. Whole-genome sequencing of the parent-offspring trio revealed a de novo mutation of ADAMTSL4 in this case. The heterozygous p.Arg776His missense variant affects a conserved residue of the ADAMTSL4 gene that encodes a secreted glycoprotein expressed in the lens throughout embryonic development. In humans, ADAMTSL4 genetic variants cause recessively inherited forms of subluxation of the lens. Given that ADAMTSL4 is a functional candidate gene for inherited disorders of the lens, we suggest that heterozygosity for the identified missense variant may have caused the congenital cataract in the affected calf. Cattle populations should be monitored for unexplained cataract cases, with subsequent DNA sequencing a hypothesized pathogenic effect of heterozygous ADAMTSL4 variants could be confirmed
