On the missing 2175 Angstroem-bump in the Calzetti extinction curve
The aim of the paper is to give a physical explanation of the absence of the
feature in the Calzetti extinction curve. We analyze the dust attenuation of a
homogeneous source seen through a distant inhomogeneous distant screen. The
inhomogeneities are described through an idealized isothermal turbulent medium
where the probability distribution function (PDF) of the column density is
log-normal. In addition it is assumed that below a certain critical column
density the carriers of the extinction bump at 2175 Angstroem are being
destroyed by the ambient UV radiation field. Turbulence is found to be a
natural explanation not only of the flatter curvature of the Calzetti
extinction curve but also of the missing bump provided the critical column
density is N_H >= 10^21 cm^-2. The density contrast needed to explain both
characteristics is well consistent with the Mach number of the cold neutral
medium of our own Galaxy which suggests a density contrast sigma_(rho/) 6.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures accepted for publication in A&A, section
Neural Compensations After Lesion of the Cerebral Cortex
Functional improvement after cortical
injury can be stimulated by various factors
including experience, psychomotor stimulants,
gonadal hormones, and neurotrophic factors.
The, timing of the administration of these
factors may be critical, however. For example,
factors such as gonadal hormones, nerve growth
factor, or psychomotor stimulants may act to
either enhance or retard recovery, depending
upon the timing of administration. Nicotine, for
instance, stimulates recovery if given after an
injury but is without neuroprotective effect and
may actually retard recovery if it is given only
preinjury. A related timing problem concerns
the interaction of different treatments. For
example, behavioral therapies may act, in part,
via their action in stimulating the endogenous
production of trophic factors. Thus, combining
behavioral therapies with pharmacological
administration of compounds to increase the
availability of trophic factors enhances functional
outcome. Finally, anatomical evidence suggests
that the mechanism of action of many treatments
is through changes in dendritic arborization,
which presumably reflects changes in synaptic
organization. Factors that enhance dendritic
change stimulate functional compensation,
whereas factors that retard or block dendritic
change block or retard compensation
Persistent isolated hypocortisolism following brief treatment with trilostane
A 12-year-old male neutered Miniature Poodle with confirmed pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism was treated with trilostane. After three doses, it developed clinical and laboratory changes suggestive of isolated hypocortisolism ('atypical hypoadrenocorticism'), which persisted and progressed for more than 3 months despite immediate withdrawal of the trilostane. The clinical signs of hyperadrenocorticism resolved without further trilostane. After 3 months, prednisolone treatment was started and the clinical signs of hypocortisolism resolved. Prednisolone therapy was required for more than 1 year. Ultrasonography initially demonstrated large hypoechoic adrenal cortices, typical of dogs with hyperadrenocorticism, which then became small and heteroechoic, consistent with the development of adrenal necrosis. Persistent isolated hypocortisolism has not been reported previously as a complication of trilostane therapy. The case is also remarkable for the very short duration of trilostane therapy that elicited this complication. Clinicians should be aware that trilostane therapy may result in adrenal necrosis, even in the very earliest stages of therapy, but prompt action can prevent a life-threatening situation
Inflammatory Markers Associated With Subclinical Coronary Artery Disease: The Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study.
BackgroundDespite evidence for higher risk of coronary artery disease among HIV+ individuals, the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. We investigated associations of inflammatory markers with subclinical coronary artery disease in 923 participants of the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (575 HIV+ and 348 HIV- men) who underwent noncontrast computed tomography scans for coronary artery calcification, the majority (n=692) also undergoing coronary computed tomography angiography.Methods and resultsOutcomes included presence and extent of coronary artery calcification, plus computed tomography angiography analysis of presence, composition, and extent of coronary plaques and severity of coronary stenosis. HIV+ men had significantly higher levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), intercellular adhesion molecule-1, C-reactive protein, and soluble-tumor necrosis factor-α receptor (sTNFαR) I and II (all P<0.01) and a higher prevalence of noncalcified plaque (63% versus 54%, P=0.02) on computed tomography angiography. Among HIV+ men, for every SD increase in log-interleukin-6 and log intercellular adhesion molecule-1, there was a 30% and 60% increase, respectively, in the prevalence of coronary stenosis â„50% (all P<0.05). Similarly, sTNFαR I and II in HIV+ participants were associated with an increase in prevalence of coronary stenosis â„70% (P<0.05). Higher levels of interleukin-6, sTNFαR I, and sTNFαR II were also associated with greater coronary artery calcification score in HIV+ men (P<0.01).ConclusionsHigher inflammatory marker levels are associated with greater prevalence of coronary stenosis in HIV+ men. Our findings underscore the need for further study to elucidate the relationships of inflammatory pathways with coronary artery disease in HIV+ individuals
The ERE of the "Red Rectangle" revisited
We present in this paper high signal-to-noise long-slit optical spectra of
the Extended Red Emission (ERE) in the "Red Rectangle" (RR) nebula. These
spectra, obtained at different positions in the nebula, reveal an extremely
complex emission pattern on top of the broad ERE continuum. It is well known
that three features converge at large distance from the central object, in
wavelength and profile to the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) at 5797, 5849.8
and 6614 ang., (e.g. Sarre et al., 1995). In this paper we give a detailed
inventory of all spectral subfeatures observed in the 5550--6850 ang. spectral
range. Thanks to our high S/N spectra, we propose 5 new features in the RR that
can be associated with DIBs. For the 5550--6200 ang. spectral range our slit
position was on top of the NE spike of the X shaped nebula. A detailed
description of the spatial profile-changes is given of the strongest features
revealing that even far out in the nebula at 24 arcsec from the central star,
there remains a small shift in wavelength of 1 respectively 2 ang between the
ERE subfeatures and the DIB wavelengths of 5797.11 and 5849.78 ang.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysic
Cnidaria in UK coastal waters: description of spatio-temporal patterns and inter-annual variability
Note that the accepted version of this paper is available on open access in ORE at: http://hdl.handle.net/10871/15245Concern has been expressed over future biogeographical expansion and habitat capitalization by species of the phylum Cnidaria, as this may have negative implications on human activities and ecosystems. There is, however, a paucity of knowledge and understanding of jellyfish ecology, in particular species distribution and seasonality. Recent studies in the UK have principally focused on the Celtic, Irish and North Seas, but all in isolation. In this study we analyse data from a publicly- driven sightings scheme across UK coastal waters (2003â2011; 9 years), with the aim of increasing knowledge on spatial and temporal patterns and trends. We describe inter-annual variability, seasonality and patterns of spatial distribution, and compare these with existing historic literature. Although incidentally-collected data lack quantification of effort, we suggest that with appropriate data management and interpretation, publicly-driven, citizen-science-based, recording schemes can provide for large-scale (spatial and temporal) coverage that would otherwise be logistically and financially unattainable. These schemes may also contribute to baseline data from which future changes in patterns or trends might be identified. We further suggest that findings from such schemes may be strengthened by the inclusion of some element of effort-corrected data collection
DoD-GEIS Rift Valley Fever Monitoring and Prediction System as a Tool for Defense and US Diplomacy
Over the last 10 years the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center's Global Emerging Infections Surveillance and Response System (GEIS) partnering with NASA'S Goddard Space Flight Center and USDA's USDA-Center for Medical, Agricultural & Veterinary Entomology established and have operated the Rift Valley fever Monitoring and Prediction System to monitor, predict and assess the risk of Rift Valley fever outbreaks and other vector-borne diseases over Africa and the Middle East. This system is built on legacy DoD basic research conducted by Walter Reed Army Institute of Research overseas laboratory (US Army Medical Research Unit-Kenya) and the operational satellite environmental monitoring by NASA GSFC. Over the last 10 years of operation the system has predicted outbreaks of Rift Valley fever in the Horn of Africa, Sudan, South Africa and Mauritania. The ability to predict an outbreak several months before it occurs provides early warning to protect deployed forces, enhance public health in concerned countries and is a valuable tool use.d by the State Department in US Diplomacy. At the international level the system has been used by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAD) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to support their monitoring, surveillance and response programs in the livestock sector and human health. This project is a successful testament of leveraging resources of different federal agencies to achieve objectives of force health protection, health and diplomacy
Tissue- specific angiogenic and invasive properties of human neonatal thymus and bone MSCs: Role of SLIT3- ROBO1
Although mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) are being explored in numerous clinical trials as proangiogenic and proregenerative agents, the influence of tissue origin on the therapeutic qualities of these cells is poorly understood. Complicating the functional comparison of different types of MSCs are the confounding effects of donor age, genetic background, and health status of the donor. Leveraging a clinical setting where MSCs can be simultaneously isolated from discarded but healthy bone and thymus tissues from the same neonatal patients, thereby controlling for these confounding factors, we performed an in vitro and in vivo paired comparison of these cells. We found that both neonatal thymus (nt)MSCs and neonatal bone (nb)MSCs expressed different pericytic surface marker profiles. Further, ntMSCs were more potent in promoting angiogenesis in vitro and in vivo and they were also more motile and efficient at invading ECM in vitro. These functional differences were in part mediated by an increased ntMSC expression of SLIT3, a factor known to activate endothelial cells. Further, we discovered that SLIT3 stimulated MSC motility and fibrin gel invasion via ROBO1 in an autocrine fashion. Consistent with our findings in human MSCs, we found that SLIT3 and ROBO1 were expressed in the perivascular cells of the neonatal murine thymus gland and that global SLIT3 or ROBO1 deficiency resulted in decreased neonatal murine thymus gland vascular density. In conclusion, ntMSCs possess increased proangiogenic and invasive behaviors, which are in part mediated by the paracrine and autocrine effects of SLIT3.Comparison of mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) from the human neonatal thymus and bone revealed that the axon guidance molecule SLIT3 is important for MSC proangiogenic effects. Not only is SLIT3 an endothelial cell stimulatory factor, but it also promotes MSC migration and invasion in an autocrine fashion via the ROBO1 receptor. New limb-darkening coefficients and synthetic photometry for model-atmosphere grids at Galactic, LMC, and SMC abundances
New grids of Atlas9 models have been calculated using revised convection
parameters and updated opacity-distribution functions, for chemical
compositions intended to be representative of solar, [M/H] = +0.3, +0.5, Large
Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) abundances. The grids
cover T(eff) = 3.5-50kK, from log(g) = 5.0 to the effective Eddington limit.
Limb-darkening coefficients and synthetic photometry are presented in the
UBVRIJHKLM, uvby, ugriz, WFCAM, Hipparcos/Tycho, and Kepler passbands for these
models, and for Castelli's comparable `new-ODF' grids. Flux distributions are
given for the new models. The sensitivity of limb-darkening coefficients to the
adopted physics is illustrated
