Flow Equation for Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics
We study supersymmetric quantum mechanics with the functional RG formulated
in terms of an exact and manifestly off-shell supersymmetric flow equation for
the effective action. We solve the flow equation nonperturbatively in a
systematic super-covariant derivative expansion and concentrate on systems with
unbroken supersymmetry. Already at next-to-leading order, the energy of the
first excited state for convex potentials is accurately determined within a 1%
error for a wide range of couplings including deeply nonperturbative regimes.Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures, references added, typos correcte
Center clusters in the Yang-Mills vacuum
Properties of local Polyakov loops for SU(2) and SU(3) lattice gauge theory
at finite temperature are analyzed. We show that spatial clusters can be
identified where the local Polyakov loops have values close to the same center
element. For a suitable definition of these clusters the deconfinement
transition can be characterized by the onset of percolation in one of the
center sectors. The analysis is repeated for different resolution scales of the
lattice and we argue that the center clusters have a continuum limit.Comment: Table added. Final version to appear in JHE
Heat kernel coefficients for chiral bag boundary conditions
We study the asymptotic expansion of the smeared L2-trace of fexp(-tP^2)
where P is an operator of Dirac type, f is an auxiliary smooth smearing
function which is used to localize the problem, and chiral bag boundary
conditions are imposed. Special case calculations, functorial methods and the
theory of zeta and eta invariants are used to obtain the boundary part of the
heat-kernel coefficients a1 and a2.Comment: Published in J. Phys. A38, 2259-2276 (2005). Record without file

Achieving ground state and enhancing entanglement by recovering information
For cavity-assisted optomechanical cooling experiments, it has been shown in
the literature that the cavity bandwidth needs to be smaller than the
mechanical frequency in order to achieve the quantum ground state of the
mechanical oscillator, which is the so-called resolved-sideband or good-cavity
limit. We provide a new but physically equivalent insight into the origin of
such a limit: that is information loss due to a finite cavity bandwidth. With
an optimal feedback control to recover those information, we can surpass the
resolved-sideband limit and achieve the quantum ground state. Interestingly,
recovering those information can also significantly enhance the optomechanical
entanglement. Especially when the environmental temperature is high, the
entanglement will either exist or vanish critically depending on whether
information is recovered or not, which is a vivid example of a quantum eraser.Comment: 9 figures, 18 page
Spectral asymmetry for bag boundary conditions
We give an expression, in terms of boundary spectral functions, for the
spectral asymmetry of the Euclidean Dirac operator in two dimensions, when its
domain is determined by local boundary conditions, and the manifold is of
product type. As an application, we explicitly evaluate the asymmetry in the
case of a finite-length cylinder, and check that the outcome is consistent with
our general result. Finally, we study the asymmetry in a disk, which is a
non-product case, and propose an interpretation.Comment: Some minor changes. To appear in Journal of Physics A: Mathematical

Towards Canonical Quantum Gravity for G1 Geometries in 2+1 Dimensions with a Lambda--Term
The canonical analysis and subsequent quantization of the (2+1)-dimensional
action of pure gravity plus a cosmological constant term is considered, under
the assumption of the existence of one spacelike Killing vector field. The
proper imposition of the quantum analogues of the two linear (momentum)
constraints reduces an initial collection of state vectors, consisting of all
smooth functionals of the components (and/or their derivatives) of the spatial
metric, to particular scalar smooth functionals. The demand that the
midi-superspace metric (inferred from the kinetic part of the quadratic
(Hamiltonian) constraint) must define on the space of these states an induced
metric whose components are given in terms of the same states, which is made
possible through an appropriate re-normalization assumption, severely reduces
the possible state vectors to three unique (up to general coordinate
transformations) smooth scalar functionals. The quantum analogue of the
Hamiltonian constraint produces a Wheeler-DeWitt equation based on this reduced
manifold of states, which is completely integrated.Comment: Latex 2e source file, 25 pages, no figures, final version (accepted

Species composition and insecticide resistance in malaria vectors in Ellibou, southern Côte d'Ivoire and first finding of; Anopheles arabiensis; in Côte d'Ivoire
Background Knowing the species composition and insecticide resistance status of the target vector population is important to guide malaria vector control. The aim of this study was to characterize the malaria vector population in terms of species composition, insecticide susceptibility status and potential underlying resistance mechanisms in Ellibou, southern Côte d'Ivoire. Methods A 1-year longitudinal entomological survey was conducted using light traps and pyrethroid spray catches to sample adult mosquitoes in combination with larval sampling. The susceptibility status of Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (s.l.) to bendiocarb, deltamethrin, DDT and malathion was assessed using the World Health Organization insecticide susceptibility test. Additionally, An. gambiae specimens were screened for knockdown (kdr) and acetylcholineesterase (ace1) target site resistance alleles, and the expression levels of eight metabolic resistance genes, including seven cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P450s) and one glutathione S-transferase (GST), measured with reverse transcription quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Results Overall, 2383 adult mosquitoes from 12 different taxa were collected with Culex quinquefasciatus and An. gambiae being the predominant taxa. Molecular identification of An. gambiae s.l. revealed the presence of Anopheles arabiensis, Anopheles coluzzii, An. gambiae sensu stricto (s.s.) and Anopheles coluzzii/An. gambiae s.s. hybrids. Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes were resistant to all insecticides except malathion. PCR diagnostics revealed the presence of ace1-G280S and the kdr L995F, L995S and N1570Y target-site mutations. Additionally, several genes were upregulated, including five P450s (i.e., CYP6P3, CYP6M2, CYP9K1, CYP6Z1, CYP6P1) and GSTE2. Conclusion This is the first documented presence of An. arabiensis in Côte d'Ivoire. Its detection - together with a recent finding further north of the country - confirms its existence in the country, which is an early warning sign, as An. arabiensis shows a different biology than the currently documented malaria vectors. Because the local An. gambiae population was still susceptible to malathion, upregulation of P450s, conferring insecticide resistance to pyrethroids, together with the presence of ace1, suggest negative cross-resistance. Therefore, organophosphates could be an alternative insecticide class for indoor residual spraying in the Ellibou area, while additional tools against the outdoor biting An. arabiensis will have to be considered
Dynamics of Tunneling Centers in Metallic Systems
Dynamics of tunneling centers (TC) in metallic systems is studied, using the
technique of bosonization. The interaction of the TC with the conduction
electrons of the metal involves two processes, namely, the screening of the TC
by electrons, and the so-called electron assisted tunneling. The presence of
the latter process leads to a different form of the renormalized tunneling
frequency of the TC, and the tunneling motion is damped with a temperature
dependent relaxation rate. As the temperature is lowered, the relaxation rate
per temperature shows a steep rise as opposed to that in the absence of
electron assisted process. It is expected that this behavior should be observed
at very low temperatures in a careful experiment. The present work thus tries
to go beyond the existing work on the {\it dynamics} of a two-level system in
metals, by treating the electron assisted process.Comment: REVTeX twocolumn format, 5 pages, two PostScript figures available on

Spectral action for torsion with and without boundaries
We derive a commutative spectral triple and study the spectral action for a
rather general geometric setting which includes the (skew-symmetric) torsion
and the chiral bag conditions on the boundary. The spectral action splits into
bulk and boundary parts. In the bulk, we clarify certain issues of the previous
calculations, show that many terms in fact cancel out, and demonstrate that
this cancellation is a result of the chiral symmetry of spectral action. On the
boundary, we calculate several leading terms in the expansion of spectral
action in four dimensions for vanishing chiral parameter of the
boundary conditions, and show that is a critical point of the action
in any dimension and at all orders of the expansion.Comment: 16 pages, references adde
Pole structure of the Hamiltonian -function for a singular potential
We study the pole structure of the -function associated to the
Hamiltonian of a quantum mechanical particle living in the half-line
, subject to the singular potential . We show that
admits nontrivial self-adjoint extensions (SAE) in a given range of values
of the parameter . The -functions of these operators present poles
which depend on and, in general, do not coincide with half an integer (they
can even be irrational). The corresponding residues depend on the SAE
considered.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure, RevTeX. References added. Version to appear in
