MONTE CARLO SIMULATIONS OF MUON PRODUCTION
Muon production requirements for a muon collider are presented. Production of
muons from pion decay is studied. Lithium lenses and solenoids are considered
for focussing pions from a target, and for matching the pions into a decay
channel. Pion decay channels of alternating quadrupoles and long solenoids are
compared. Monte Carlo simulations are presented for production of by protons over a wide energy range, and criteria for

Orbital Orientations of Exoplanets: HAT-P-4b is Prograde and HAT-P-14b is Retrograde
We present observations of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect for two
exoplanetary systems, revealing the orientations of their orbits relative to
the rotation axes of their parent stars. HAT-P-4b is prograde, with a
sky-projected spin-orbit angle of lambda = -4.9 +/- 11.9 degrees. In contrast,
HAT-P-14b is retrograde, with lambda = 189.1 +/- 5.1 degrees. These results
conform with a previously noted pattern among the stellar hosts of close-in
giant planets: hotter stars have a wide range of obliquities and cooler stars
have low obliquities. This, in turn, suggests that three-body dynamics and
tidal dissipation are responsible for the short-period orbits of many
exoplanets. In addition, our data revealed a third body in the HAT-P-4 system,

Line-profile tomography of exoplanet transits I: The Doppler shadow of HD 189733b
We present a direct method for isolating the component of the starlight
blocked by a planet as it transits its host star, and apply it to spectra of
the bright transiting planet HD 189733b. We model the global shape of the
stellar cross-correlation function as the convolution of a limb-darkened
rotation profile and a gaussian representing the Doppler core of the average
photospheric line profile. The light blocked by the planet during the transit
is a gaussian of the same intrinsic width, whose trajectory across the line
profile yields a precise measure of the misalignment angle and an independent
measure of v sin I. We show that even when v sin I is less than the width of
the intrinsic line profile, the travelling Doppler "shadow" cast by the planet
creates an identifiable distortion in the line profiles which is amenable to
direct modelling. Direct measurement of the trajectory of the missing starlight
yields self-consistent measures of the projected stellar rotation rate, the
intrinsic width of the mean local photospheric line profile, the projected
spin-orbit misalignment angle, and the system's centre-of-mass velocity.
Combined with the photometric rotation period, the results give a geometrical
measure of the stellar radius which agrees closely with values obtained from
high-precision transit photometry if a small amount of differential rotation is

Twenty-One New Light Curves of OGLE-TR-56b: New System Parameters and Limits on Timing Variations
Although OGLE-TR-56b was the second transiting exoplanet discovered, only one
light curve, observed in 2006, has been published besides the discovery data.
We present twenty-one light curves of nineteen different transits observed
between July 2003 and July 2009 with the Magellan Telescopes and Gemini South.
The combined analysis of the new light curves confirms a slightly inflated
planetary radius relative to model predictions, with R_p = 1.378 +/- 0.090 R_J.
However, the values found for the transit duration, semimajor axis, and
inclination values differ significantly from the previous result, likely due to
systematic errors. The new semimajor axis and inclination, a = 0.01942 +/-
0.00015 AU and i = 73.72 +/- 0.18 degrees, are smaller than previously
reported, while the total duration, T_14 = 7931 +/- 38 s, is 18 minutes longer.
The transit midtimes have errors from 23 s to several minutes, and no evidence
is seen for transit midtime or duration variations. Similarly, no change is
seen in the orbital period, implying a nominal stellar tidal decay factor of
Q_* = 10^7, with a three-sigma lower limit of 10^5.7.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, accepted to Ap
A Prograde, Low-Inclination Orbit for the Very Hot Jupiter WASP-3b
We present new spectroscopic and photometric observations of the transiting
exoplanetary system WASP-3. Spectra obtained during two separate transits
exhibit the Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) effect and allow us to estimate the
sky-projected angle between the planetary orbital axis and the stellar rotation
axis, lambda = 3.3^{+2.5}_{-4.4} degrees. This alignment between the axes
suggests that WASP-3b has a low orbital inclination relative to the equatorial
plane of its parent star. During our first night of spectroscopic measurements,
we observed an unexpected redshift briefly exceeding the expected sum of the
orbital and RM velocities by 140 m/s. This anomaly could represent the
occultation of material erupting from the stellar photosphere, although it is
more likely to be an artifact caused by moonlight scattered into the

HATS-1b: The First Transiting Planet Discovered by the HATSouth Survey
We report the discovery of HATS-1b, a transiting extrasolar planet orbiting
the moderately bright V=12.05 G dwarf star GSC 6652-00186, and the first planet
discovered by HATSouth, a global network of autonomous wide-field telescopes.
HATS-1b has a period P~3.4465 d, mass Mp~1.86MJ, and radius Rp~1.30RJ. The host
star has a mass of 0.99Msun, and radius of 1.04Rsun. The discovery light curve
of HATS-1b has near continuous coverage over several multi-day periods,
demonstrating the power of using a global network of telescopes to discover

Against academic identity
‘Academic identity’ is a key issue for debates about the professionalisation of university teaching and research, as well as the meaning and purpose of higher education. However, the concept of ‘academic identity’ is not adequate to the critical task for which it is utilised as it fails to deal with the real nature of work in capitalist society. It is important to move on from the mystifying and reified politics of identity and seek to understand academic life so that its alienated forms can be transformed. This can be done by grasping the essential aspects of capitalist work in both its abstract and concrete forms, as well as the historical and social processes out of which academic labour has emerged
Interferometric Phase Calibration Sources in the Declination Range 0deg to -30deg
We present a catalog of 321 compact radio sources in the declination range
0deg > delta > -30deg. The positions of these sources have been measured with a
two-dimensional rms accuracy of 35 milliarcseconds using the NRAO Very Large
Array. Each source has a peak flux density >50 mJy at 8.4 GHz. We intend for
this catalog to be used mainly for selection of phase calibration sources for
radio interferometers, although compact radio sources have other scientific

The Development of a Common Investment Appraisal for Urban Transport Projects.
In December 1990 we were invited by Birmingham City Council and Centro to submit a proposal for an introductory study of the development of a common investment appraisal for urban transport projects. Many of the issues had arisen during the Birmingham Integrated Transport Study (BITS) in which we were involved, and in the subsequent assessment of light rail schemes of which we have considerable experience. In subsequent discussion, the objectives were identified as being:- (i) to identify, briefly, the weaknesses with existing appraisal techniques; (ii) to develop proposals for common methods for the social cost-benefit appraisal of both urban road and rail schemes which overcome these weaknesses; (iii) to develop complementary and consistent proposals for common methods of financial appraisal of such projects; (iv) to develop proposals for variants of the methods in (ii) and (iii) which are appropriate to schemes of differing complexity and cost; (v) to consider briefly methods of treating externalities, and performance against other public sector goals, which are consistent with those developed under (ii) to (iv) above; (vi) to recommend work to be done in the second phase of the study (beyond March 1991) on the provision of input to such evaluation methods from strategic and mode-specific models, and on the testing of the proposed evaluation methods. Such issues are particularly topical at present, and we have been able to draw, in our study, on experience of:-
(i) evaluation methods developed for BITS and subsequent integrated transport studies (MVA) (ii) evaluation of individual light rail and heavy rail investment projects (ITS,MVA); (iii) the recommendations of AMA in "Changing Gear" (iv) advice to IPPR on appraisal methodology (ITS); (v) submissions to the House of Commons enquiry into "Roads for the Future" (ITS); (vi) advice to the National Audit Office (ITS) (vii) involvement in the SACTRA study of urban road appraisal (MVA, ITS
