The A-theoretic FarrellâJones conjecture for virtually solvable groups
We prove the A -theoretic FarrellâJones conjecture for virtually solvable groups. As a corollary, we obtain that the conjecture holds for S -arithmetic groups and lattices in almost connected Lie groups
Split injectivity of A-theoretic assembly maps
We construct an equivariant coarse homology theory arising from the algebraic -theory of spherical group rings and use this theory to derive split injectivity results for associated assembly maps. On the way, we prove that the fundamental structural theorems for Waldhausen's algebraic -theory functor carry over to its nonconnective counterpart defined by Blumberg--Gepner--Tabuada
Equivariant coarse homotopy theory and coarse algebraic -homology
We study equivariant coarse homology theories through an axiomatic framework. To this end we introduce the category of equivariant bornological coarse spaces and construct the universal equivariant coarse homology theory with values in the category of equivariant coarse motivic spectra. As examples of equivariant coarse homology theories we discuss equivariant coarse ordinary homology and equivariant coarse algebraic -homology. Moreover, we discuss the cone functor, its relation with equivariant homology theories in equivariant topology, and assembly and forget-control maps. This is a preparation for applications in subsequent papers aiming at split-injectivity results for the Farrell-Jones assembly map
Filtering the assembly map in algebraic K-theory and transfer reducibility of Z n Z
The present thesis addresses two aspects of the Farrell-Jones Conjecture. First, we generalise certain categories of resolutions due to Waldhausen to construct a spectral sequence converging to the K-theory of a given group ring, and show that this spectral sequence is compatible with the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence of the classifying space under the assembly map. Second, we apply a theorem due to Oliver on fixed-point free actions of finite groups to show that Z^n \rtimes Z is transfer reducible in the sense of Bartels-LĂŒck-Reich.<br
The Grasping Side of Odours
Background: Research on multisensory integration during natural tasks such as reach-to-grasp is still in its infancy. Crossmodal links between vision, proprioception and audition have been identified, but how olfaction contributes to plan and control reach-to-grasp movements has not been decisively shown. We used kinematics to explicitly test the influence of olfactory stimuli on reach-to-grasp movements. Methodology/Principal Findings: Subjects were requested to reach towards and grasp a small or a large visual target (i.e., precision grip, involving the opposition of index finger and thumb for a small size target and a power grip, involving the flexion of all digits around the object for a large target) in the absence or in the presence of an odour evoking either a small or a large object that if grasped would require a precision grip and a whole hand grasp, respectively. When the type of grasp evoked by the odour did not coincide with that for the visual target, interference effects were evident on the kinematics of hand shaping and the level of synergies amongst fingers decreased. When the visual target and the object evoked by the odour required the same type of grasp, facilitation emerged and the intrinsic relations amongst individual fingers were maintained. Conclusions/Significance: This study demonstrates that olfactory information contains highly detailed information able to elicit the planning for a reach-to-grasp movement suited to interact with the evoked object. The findings offer a substantia
Tele-Neuro-Ophthalmology During the Age of COVID-19
This article is made available for unrestricted research re-use and secondary analysis in any form or be any means with acknowledgement of the original source. These permissions are granted for the duration of the World Health Organization (WHO) declaration of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. In this article, we present possible âbest practicesâ for neuro-ophthalmologists to design and implement tele-neuro-ophthalmology during and following this national and international crisis. We review the previsit, intravisit, and postvisit steps in a practical manner that we hope will be of value to practicing neuro-ophthalmologists. We include sections on how to appropriately implement telemedicine and patient selection, focusing on different types of visits, determining eligible patients, and triaging patients. In addition, we outline the software and hardware requirements for the electronic medical record (EMR), including Epic and non-Epic platforms. We also describe the nuts and bolts of how to get started, including descriptions of the multiple useful applications and software available. As with any medical encounter, privacy regulations, billing, and coding can be significant hurdles to implementation, and we discuss each in detail. We hope that this article will be of use for neuro-ophthalmologists, comprehensive ophthalmologists, and general neurologists because we deal with effects and aftereffects of this COVID-19 pandemic. We believe that this current disruptive innovation will drive the future of telemedicine in neuro-ophthalmology
MERTK receptor tyrosine kinase is a therapeutic target in melanoma
Metastatic melanoma is one of the most aggressive forms of cutaneous cancers. Although recent therapeutic advances have prolonged patient survival, the prognosis remains dismal. C-MER proto-oncogene tyrosine kinase (MERTK) is a receptor tyrosine kinase with oncogenic properties that is often overexpressed or activated in various malignancies. Using both protein immunohistochemistry and microarray analyses, we demonstrate that MERTK expression correlates with disease progression. MERTK expression was highest in metastatic melanomas, followed by primary melanomas, while the lowest expression was observed in nevi. Additionally, over half of melanoma cell lines overexpressed MERTK compared with normal human melanocytes; however, overexpression did not correlate with mutations in BRAF or RAS. Stimulation of melanoma cells with the MERTK ligand GAS6 resulted in the activation of several downstream signaling pathways including MAPK/ERK, PI3K/AKT, and JAK/STAT. MERTK inhibition via shRNA reduced MERTK-mediated downstream signaling, reduced colony formation by up to 59%, and diminished tumor volume by 60% in a human melanoma murine xenograft model. Treatment of melanoma cells with UNC1062, a novel MERTK-selective small-molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitor, reduced activation of MERTK-mediated downstream signaling, induced apoptosis in culture, reduced colony formation in soft agar, and inhibited invasion of melanoma cells. This work establishes MERTK as a therapeutic target in melanoma and provides a rationale for the continued development of MERTK-targeted therapies
Shortening binary complexes and commutativity of -theory with infinite products
We show that in Grayson's model of higher algebraic -theory using binary acyclic complexes, the complexes of length two suffice to generate the whole group. Moreover, we prove that the comparison map from Nenashev's model for to Grayson's model for is an isomorphism. It follows that algebraic -theory of exact categories commutes with infinite products
