A pragmatics' view of patient identification
Patient identification is a central safety critical aspect of healthcare work. Most healthcare activities require identification of patients by healthcare staff, often in connection with the use of patient records. Indeed, the increasing reliance on electronic systems makes the correct matching of patients with their records a keystone for patient safety. Most research on patient identification has been carried out in hospital settings. Quasideterminants
The determinant is a main organizing tool in commutative linear algebra. In
this review we present a theory of the quasideterminants defined for matrices
over a division algebra. We believe that the notion of quasideterminants should
be one of main organizing tools in noncommutative algebra giving them the same

Patterns of gene expression in schistosomes: localization by whole mount in situ hybridization
rom the identification of genes to the characterization of their functions and interactions. Developmental biologists have long used whole mount in situ hybridization (WISH) to determine gene expression patterns, as a vital tool for formulating and testing hypotheses about function. This paper describes the application of WISH to the study of gene expression in larval and adult schistosomes. Fixed worms were permeablized by proteinase K treatment for hybridization with digoxygenin-labelled RNA probes, with binding being detected by alkaline phosphatase-coupled anti-digoxygenin antibodies, and BM Purple substrate. Discrete staining patterns for the transcripts of the molecules Sm29, cathepsin L, antigen 10.3 and chorion were observed in the tegument cell bodies, gut epithelium, oesophageal gland and vitelline lobules, respectively, of adult worms. Transcripts of the molecules SGTP4, GP18-22 and cathepsin L were localized to tegument cell bodies and embryonic gut, respectively, of lung schistosomula. We also showed that Fast Red TR fluorescent substrate can refine the pattern of localization permitting use of confocal microscopy. We believe that method of WISH will find broad application, in synergy with other emerging post-genomic techniques, such as RNA interference, to studies focused at increasing our molecular understanding of schistosomes
A model for the kinetics of a solar-pumped long path laser experiment
A kinetic model for a solar-simulator pumped iodine laser system is developed and compared to an experiment in which the solar simulator output is dispersed over a large active volume (150 cu cm) with low simulator light intensity (approx. 200 solar constants). A trace foreign gas which quenches the upper level is introduced into the model. Furthermore, a constant representing optical absorption of the stimulated emission is introduced, in addition to a constant representing the scattering at each of the mirrors, via the optical cavity time constant. The non-uniform heating of the gas is treated as well as the pressure change as a function of time within the cavity. With these new phenomena introduced into the kinetic model, a best reasonable fit to the experimental data is found by adjusting the reaction rate coefficients within the range of known uncertainty by numerical methods giving a new bound within this range of uncertainty. The experimental parameters modeled are the lasing time, laser pulse energy, and time to laser threshold
Induced scattering of short radio pulses
Effect of the induced Compton and Raman scattering on short, bright radio
pulses is investigated. It is shown that when a single pulse propagates through
the scattering medium, the effective optical depth is determined by the
duration of the pulse but not by the scale of the medium. The induced
scattering could hinder propagation of the radio pulse only if close enough to
the source a dense enough plasma is presented. The induced scattering within
the relativistically moving source places lower limits on the Lorentz factor of
the source. The results are applied to the recently discovered short

Comprehensive Organic Analysis of Antartic Micrometeorites
Introduction: Micrometeorites (MMs) are thought to be significant contributors of organic material to the early Earth [1], and a variety of techniques have been employed to identify their organic composition [2-6]. These include the identification of key organic groups using combinations of infrared, energy dispersive Xray, electron energy loss and Raman spectroscopy and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy [2-4], highlighting similarities between that of MMs and carbonaceous chondrites.
Few studies, however, have focused on the characterisation of individual micrometeoritic organic components. Microscopic L2MS has been used to identify up to C5 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their alkyl derivatives [5]. A combination of ionexchange chromatography and fluorimetric detection has also been successful in identifying a number of protein amino acids including glycine and alanine [6].
We have previously reported a method to analyse ?g-sized quantities of extraterrestrial materials, with prior application to assessing organic volatile release from MM atmospheric entry heating simulations [7]. In this study we utilise this technique to characterise the organic composition of Antarctic terrestrial particles and MMs collected in 1994 from Cap-Prudhomme [8]

On the prediction of multigrid efficiency through local mode analysis
A single grid local mode analysis is used to predict the smoothing properties of numerical schemes for solving the Navier-Stokes equations with factorization based on Stone's Strongly Implicit Method. Four difference approximations for the convection terms are considered, namely, hybrid, central, second-order upwind, and third-order upwind. Smoothing factors from the analysis are compared with practical convergence factors in a multigrid method for flow over a backward facing step and it is found that the local mode analysis correctly predicts the effects of Reynolds number and higher-order schemes
