An analysis of the environment and competitive dynamics of management research
Purpose – The purpose of this paper examines some of the controversies facing business schools in their future evolution and pays particular attention to their competitive positioning as centres of management research.
Design/methodology/approach – The paper combines and builds on current literature to provide an analytic overview of the environment and competitive challenges to management research in business schools.
Findings – The paper assesses the impacts of a globalized environment and ever-changing competitive dynamics, for example in terms of the supply of high-quality faculty, on the activity of management research in business schools. It points out that research impacts must be judged not only in terms of theoretical development but also managerial and policy impact. However, managerial impact is difficult to measure and the “voice of practice” must be carefully identified.
Originality/value – The paper identifies the current challenges for undertaking innovative research in business schools in light of their competitive environment. Three interrelated conjectures focusing particularly on managerial impact are raised which identify problems and limitations of current debates on management research in business schools
On the effects of firing memory in the dynamics of conjunctive networks
Boolean networks are one of the most studied discrete models in the context
of the study of gene expression. In order to define the dynamics associated to
a Boolean network, there are several \emph{update schemes} that range from
parallel or \emph{synchronous} to \emph{asynchronous.} However, studying each
possible dynamics defined by different update schemes might not be efficient.
In this context, considering some type of temporal delay in the dynamics of
Boolean networks emerges as an alternative approach. In this paper, we focus in
studying the effect of a particular type of delay called \emph{firing memory}
in the dynamics of Boolean networks. Particularly, we focus in symmetric
(non-directed) conjunctive networks and we show that there exist examples that
exhibit attractors of non-polynomial period. In addition, we study the
prediction problem consisting in determinate if some vertex will eventually
change its state, given an initial condition. We prove that this problem is
{\bf PSPACE}-complete

Secukinumab in the treatment of psoriasis: patient selection and perspectives.
Secukinumab is a human monoclonal antibody targeting IL-17A that has been approved for three indications: moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. In Phase III clinical trials for each of these three indications, secukinumab has proven to be both highly efficacious and well-tolerated. However, several biologic medications are currently approved for the treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis, and many demonstrate excellent efficacy and safety. Due to this wide selection, it is often unclear how to choose biologics for specific patients. Important considerations in biologic selection include clinical efficacy, safety, cost, convenience, onset of action, and management of comorbid disease. Clinical Evaluation of Risankizumab-rzaa in the Treatment of Plaque Psoriasis.
Risankizumab-rzaa (Skyrizi®; AbbVie) is a humanized IgG monoclonal antibody directed against interleukin-23p19 (IL-23p19) indicated for the treatment of moderate-to-severe psoriasis in adults who are candidates for systemic therapy or phototherapy. Four pivotal Phase III trials: UltIMMa-1, UltIMMa-2, IMMhance, and IMMvent have demonstrated efficacy and safety in patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis. This review highlights important findings from these and other clinical trials that have evaluated risankizumab. In addition, we discuss the mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics, dosing recommendations, drug interactions, other potential indications, and ongoing clinical trials
In Vitro Evaluation of Anti-Eimeria tenella, Gamont-specific, Monoclonal Antibodies and Partial Characterization of their Target Antigens
This study represents an effort to interrupt the life cycle of Eimeria tenella, the parasite that causes cecal coccidiosis in chickens, with a panel of 12 gamont-specific monoclonal antibodies (Mabs). To facilitate Mab screening, it was first necessary to develop a cell culture-adapted strain of E. tenella (field strain 80) from primary chicken kidney cells (PCKC) to white Leghorn chickens and back to PCKC. This alternation was repeated through 12 such passages. As a result, we have developed a cell culture-adapted strain of E. tenella that produces over 280% more oocysts in vitro than the original parent strain, and over six times as many oocysts as reported by other investigators. Of the 12 Mabs evaluated, Mab HD8 had the greatest inhibitory effect by significantly reducing (PE. tenella oocysts produced in cell culture by 61% compared with untreated controls. Western blot analysis revealed that the target antigen for Mab HD8 had a molecular mass of 71 and 36 kilodaltons, respectively, when run under nonreduced and reduced conditions. Subsequent evaluation of soluble and membrane-associated proteins indicated that the target antigen for Mab HD8 was membrane-associated. In vivo studies are now required to validate the efficacy of this antigen in a subunit vaccine
An Exploratory Analysis of Father Involvement in Low-Income Families
Using data from the Fragile Families study, this paper explores factors that influence paternal involvement in low-income families. 4873 fathers from the Fragile Families study were classified using CART (Classification and Regression Tree Analysis). CART is a nonparametric technique that allows many different factors to be combined in order to classify homogeneous subgroups within a sample. The CART analysis distinguished between residential and non-residential fathers. In addition, among residential fathers, race emerged as the distinguishing factor. For White men, residential status was the only factor to affect involvement. For African American and Hispanic men however, interactions among several sociodemographic characteristics revealed that both contextual and individual factors affect paternal involvement. Results suggest that an ecological approach is necessary in the investigation of paternal involvement.
Shacklefords Commercial Development Analysis
King and Queen County believes that economic development is crucial to ensuring a stable economy and high quality of life for residents of the county. With an out-commuting rate of 71% for the entire Middle Peninsula region, residents and businesses are spending their money outside of the region due to a lack of job opportunities and commercial development. However, the intersection of Route 33 and The Trail at Shacklefords within King and Queen County provides a major economic development opportunity for King and Queen County and the Middle Peninsula region.
Through a one-semester research project, students in a VCU Commercial Revitalization course were invited by King and Queen County Administrator, Thomas Swartzwelder, to complete research on King and Queen County’s opportunity to attract the commuting traffic passing Shacklefords each day, as well as meet the desires of the community and the existing plans for this site. A VDOT Smart Scale funded development, currently in the design phase, will create a telecommuting center at the Shacklefords site, and relocate the offices of the Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission (PDC) to the same development. On a separate site at the same intersection, a privately established craft brewery site represents a convergence of new development that could spur additional commercial opportunities
