    Bacteria con leche: Bacterial populations and antibiotic resistance within conventional, USDA organic, and local milk

    Concerns over food production and processing, along with increasing outbreaks of foodborne illnesses and antibiotic resistant infections have led many consumers to seek alternative food sources in the organic and local food markets. This study compared conventional, USDA certified organic, and local “farmer’s market” milk types to determine whether there is any noticeable benefit to purchasing organic or locally harvested milk in terms of their bacterial populations and level of antibiotic resistance. Samples from various milk types were plated on Tryptic Soy Agar and Milk Agar plates to enumerate bacteria, and the cultivated bacteria tested for resistance to the antibiotics penicillin, erythromycin, tetracycline, and gentamicin. Bacterial cultures from the various milk samples were identified using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Local farmer’s market milk had the most abundant and diverse bacterial composition, containing several potential pathogens, and a high general level of antibiotic resistance. Conventional milk samples also showed considerable bacterial counts and high levels of antibiotic resistance. On the other hand, USDA certified organic milk yielded no culturable bacteria on either TSA or MA plates. This study shows that concerned with food safety should consume USDA organic milk to lessen their exposure to high numbers of antibiotic resistant and potentially pathogenic bacteria

    Sources and Channels of Information Used by Educational Program Clients

    Organizations that want to create change through educational programs need to engage clients in a process that makes use of existing communication networks. Most clients use a repertoire of sources and channels for becoming aware of, learning about, and making decisions about practice or technology adoption. This paper focuses on one group of clients served by Cooperative Extension - horse owners - to identify patterns in the sources and channels of information they use. Further, the association between sets of channels and sources is assessed, controlling for relevant client attributes. The results show that horse owners have four correlated sets of information sources and four sets of information channels. The net influence of channels on clients\u27 use of sources varies, with traditional Extension channels, one-on-one consultations, and Internet channels being strongly associated with the use of sources characterized by linkages outside the community. Overall, the results suggest that horse owners can be sorted into distinct market segments that use specific sources and channels. These findings can guide the design of communication strategies for Extension professionals serving adult horse owners in Florida, as well as provide general rules for others involved in developing educational programs for other clients

Yet, we still have many important questions about its role in normal physiology and development. Moreover, we still do not fully understand how this protein mediates the adverse effects of a variety of environmental pollutants, such as the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (“dioxins”), and many polyhalogenated biphenyls. To provide a platform for future research, we provide the historical underpinnings of our current state of knowledge about AHR signal transduction, identify a few areas of needed research, and then develop concepts such as adaptive metabolism, ligand structural diversity, and the importance of proligands in receptor activation. We finish with a discussion of the cognate physiological role of the AHR, our perspective on why this receptor is so highly conserved, and how we might think about its cognate ligands in the future.This review is dedicated in memory of the career of Alan Poland, one of the truly great minds in pharmacology and toxicology.     Effect of sensory blockade and rate of sensory stimulation on local heating induced axon reflex response in facial skin

    Local neuronal circuits in non-glabrous skin drive the initial increase of the biphasic cutaneous vasodilation response to fast non-noxious heating. Voltage-sensitive Na+ (NaV) channel inhibition blocks the afferent limb of the non-glabrous forearm cutaneous axon reflex. Slow local heating does not engage this response. These mechanisms have not been adequately investigated or extended into areas associated with flushing pathology. We hypothesized that despite regional differences in sensory afferents, both sensory blockade and slowing the heating rate would abate the cutaneous axon reflex-mediated vasodilator responses in facial skin. We measured skin blood flow responses (laser-Doppler flowmetry) of 6 healthy subjects (5 female) to non-noxious forearm, cheek, and forehead local heating, expressed as a percentage of cutaneous vascular conductance at plateau (CVC = flux/mean arterial pressure). We assessed CVC during fast (1 °C/30s) and slow (1 °C/10 min) local heating to 43 °C in both NaV inhibition (topical 2.5% lidocaine/prilocaine) and control conditions. NaV inhibition decreased forearm (control: 84 ± 4, block: 34 ± 9%plateau, p < 0.001) and trended toward decreased forehead (control: 90 ± 3, block: 68 ± 3%plateau, p = 0.057) initial CVC peaks but did not alter cheek responses (control: 90 ± 3, block: 92 ± 13%plateau, p = 0.862) to fast heating. Slow heating eliminated the initial CVC peak incidence for all locations, and we observed similar results with combined slow heating and NaV inhibition. Slower sensory afferent activation rate eliminated the axon reflex response in facial and non-glabrous skin, but topical sensory blockade did not block axon reflex responses in flushing-prone cheek skin. Thus, slower heating protocols are needed to abate facial, particularly cheek, axon reflex responses
