    Mean Free Path in Disordered Multichannel Tight-Binding Wires

    Transport in a disordered tight-binding wire involves a collection of different mean free paths resulting from the distinct fermi points, which correspond to the various scattering channels of the wire. The generalization of Thouless' relation between the mean free path and the localization length Ο\xi permits to define an average channel mean free path,ℓˉ\bar\ell, such that Ο∌Nℓˉ\xi\sim N\bar\ell in an NN-channel system. The averaged mean free path ℓˉ\bar\ell is expressed exactly in terms of the total reflection coefficient of the wire and compared with the mean free path defined in the maximum entropy approach

    The molecular components of three giant HII regions (NGC 5461, NGC 5462, NGC 5471) in the galaxy M101 are investigated with new observations from the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, the NRAO 12-meter, and the Owens Valley millimeter array. Of the three HII regions, only NGC 5461 had previously been detected in CO emission. We calculate preliminary values for the molecular mass of the GMCs in NGC 5461 by assuming a CO-to-H_2 factor (X factor) and then compare these values with the virial masses. We conclude that the data in this paper demonstrate for the first time that the value of X may decrease in regions with intense star formation. The molecular mass for the association of clouds in NGC 5461 is approximately 3x10^7 Mo and is accompanied by 1-2 times as much atomic mass. The observed CO emission in NGC 5461 is an order of magnitude stronger than in NGC 5462, while it was not possible to detect molecular gas toward NGC 5471 with the JCMT. An even larger ratio of atomic to molecular gas in NGC 5471 was observed, which might be attributed to efficient conversion of molecular to atomic gas. The masses of the individual clouds in NGC 5461, which are gravitationally bound, cover a range of (2-8) x 10^5 Mo, comparable with the masses of Galactic giant molecular clouds (GMCs). Higher star forming efficiencies, and not massive clouds, appear to be the prerequisite for the formation of the large number of stars whose radiation is required to produce the giant HII regions in M101.Comment: 32 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa

    Large-Area Mapping at 850 Microns. I. Optimum Image Reconstruction from Chop Measurements

    We present results on the optimum reconstruction of chop data taken using the Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. Using an artificial data set with known noise properties, we analyze three techniques for constructing images of the sky from the chop data: Emerson Fourier deconvolution, matrix inversion, and maximum entropy reconstruction. We conclude that a matrix inversion formulation via an iterative procedure produces the best image reconstructions. We apply the three reconstruction techniques to produce maps of the calibration point source CRL 618 and the ? Ophiuchi A core at 850 ?m and use Wiener filtering to remove the high-frequency noise component from the matrix inversion method

    Intermittent permeation of cylindrical nanopores by water

    Molecular Dynamics simulations of water molecules in nanometre sized cylindrical channels connecting two reservoirs show that the permeation of water is very sensitive to the channel radius and to electric polarization of the embedding material. At threshold, the permeation is {\emph{intermittent}} on a nanosecond timescale, and strongly enhanced by the presence of an ion inside the channel, providing a possible mechanism for gating. Confined water remains surprisingly fluid and bulk-like. Its behaviour differs strikingly from that of a reference Lennard-Jones fluid, which tends to contract into a highly layered structure inside the channel.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Numerical models of irrotational binary neutron stars in general relativity

    We report on general relativistic calculations of quasiequilibrium configurations of binary neutron stars in circular orbits with zero vorticity. These configurations are expected to represent realistic situations as opposed to corotating configurations. The Einstein equations are solved under the assumption of a conformally flat spatial 3-metric (Wilson-Mathews approximation). The velocity field inside the stars is computed by solving an elliptical equation for the velocity scalar potential. Results are presented for sequences of constant baryon number (evolutionary sequences). Although the central density decreases much less with the binary separation than in the corotating case, it still decreases.     Molecular genetics and pathophysiology of 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 3 deficiency.

    Autosomal recessive mutations in the 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 3 gene impair the formation of testosterone in the fetal testis and give rise to genetic males with female external genitalia. Such individuals are usually raised as females, but virilize at the time of expected puberty as the result of increases in serum testosterone. Here we describe mutations in 12 additional subjects/families with this disorder. The 14 mutations characterized to date include 10 missense mutations, 3 splice junction abnormalities, and 1 small deletion that results in a frame shift. Three of these mutations have occurred in more than 1 family. Complementary DNAs incorporating 9 of the 10 missense mutations have been constructed and expressed in reporter cells; 8 of the 9 missense mutations cause almost complete loss of enzymatic activity. In 2 subjects with loss of function, missense mutations testosterone levels in testicular venous blood were very low. Considered together, these findings strongly suggest that the common mechanism for testosterone formation in postpubertal subjects with this disorder is the conversion of circulating androstenedione to testosterone by one or more of the unaffected 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase isoenzymes
