    Profits Over Principles: Redlining In The Newspaper Industry

    This dissertation tests previous unsubstantiated accusations that newspapers intentionally draw their circulation boundaries to exclude minority areas to make their audience look more white and affluent to increase advertising revenue. Analyzing 328 daily newspapers from 2002 – 2015, this dissertation compares the demographics of the zip codes a newspaper serves to the neighboring zip codes a newspaper does not serve. Mirroring how the Department of Justice has defined redlining under the legal theory of disparate impact, I argue that newspapers who serve minority residents at less than 4/5’s the rate of white residents have created discriminatory practices. Using this measurement, I find that in 2014/2015, 15% of daily newspapers with circulations over 10,000 were redlining African American residents, 14% were redlining Asian American residents, and 10% were redlining Hispanic residents. I then show that since 2002, the percentage of papers engaging in redlining has decreased and that newspapers who stopped redlining were most likely to do so after decreasing their service boundaries by more than 25 miles. Using logistic regression, I then show that depending on the racial group, region, residential segregation, and circulation size are significant predictors of whether a paper will engage in redlining. I conclude by arguing that more research is needed to explore whether redlining shapes news coverage and the process in which newspapers set their service boundaries

    Simulation, modelling and development of the metris RCA

    In partnership with Metris UK we discuss the utilisation of modelling and simulation methods in the development of a revolutionary 7-axis Robot CMM Arm (RCA). An offline virtual model is described, facilitating pre-emptive collision avoidance and assessment of optimal placement of the RCA relative to scan specimens. Workspace accessibility of the RCA is examined under a range of geometrical assumptions and we discuss the effects of arbitrary offsets resulting from manufacturing tolerances. Degeneracy is identified in the number of ways a given pose may be attained and it is demonstrated how a simplified model may be exploited to solve the inverse kinematics problem of finding the “correct” set of joint angles. We demonstrate how the seventh axis may be utilised to avoid obstacles or otherwise awkward poses, giving the unit greater dexterity than traditional CMMs. The results of finite element analysis and static force modelling on the RCA are presented which provide an estimate of the forces exerted on the internal measurement arm in a range of poses

    Impacts of atmospheric CO2 and soil nutritional value on plant responses to rhizosphere colonization by soil bacteria

    Concerns over rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations have led to growing interest in the effects of global change on plant-microbe interactions. As a primary substrate of plant metabolism, atmospheric CO2 influences below-ground carbon allocation and root exudation chemistry, potentially affecting rhizosphere interactions with beneficial soil microbes. In this study, we have examined the effects of different atmospheric CO2 concentrations on Arabidopsis rhizosphere colonization by the rhizobacterial strain Pseudomonas simiae WCS417 and the saprophytic strain Pseudomonas putida KT2440. Rhizosphere colonization by saprophytic KT2440 was not influenced by sub-ambient (200 ppm) and elevated (1,200 ppm) concentrations of CO2, irrespective of the carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) content of the soil. Conversely, rhizosphere colonization by WCS417 in soil with relatively low C and N content increased from sub-ambient to elevated CO2. Examination of plant responses to WCS417 revealed that plant growth and systemic resistance varied according to atmospheric CO2 concentration and soil-type, ranging from growth promotion with induced susceptibility at sub-ambient CO2, to growth repression with induced resistance at elevated CO2. Collectively, our results demonstrate that the interaction between atmospheric CO2 and soil nutritional status has a profound impact on plant responses to rhizobacteria. We conclude that predictions about plant performance under past and future climate scenarios depend on interactive plant responses to soil nutritional status and rhizobacteria

    Flow heterogeneity in the fractured Chalk aquifer of southern England

    The aim of the current work is to investigate the heterogeneity of flow in the Chalk aquifer of southern England. The rock mass properties and hydraulic characteristics of the aquifer have been characterised using a suite of geological and geophysical surveys and hydraulic tests. Fracture logs have been produced based on core logging and using optical images of boreholes. Flow has been characterised using borehole flow logs and dilution tests and hydraulic conductivity measured using packer tests. Fractures have been recorded with apertures in the range <1mm to about 30cm (sub-karstic enlargement) in diameter, however, hydrogeologically significant flow is not restricted to the enlarged fractures and is affected by the local groundwater head distribution. The work is being undertaken as part of the LOCAR Programme. LOCAR is a multi-project programme with the aim of measuring and modelling processes controlling water and material fluxes within lowland permeable catchments in the UK

    Ex vivo detection and characterization of early dental caries by optical coherence tomography and Raman spectroscopy.

    Early dental caries detection will facilitate implementation of nonsurgical methods for arresting caries progression and promoting tooth remineralization. We present a method that combines optical coherence tomography (OCT) and Raman spectroscopy to provide morphological information and biochemical specificity for detecting and characterizing incipient carious lesions found in extracted human teeth. OCT imaging of tooth samples demonstrated increased light backscattering intensity at sites of carious lesions as compared to the sound enamel. The observed lesion depth on an OCT image was approximately 290 mm matching those previously documented for incipient caries. Using Raman microspectroscopy and fiber-optic- based Raman spectroscopy to characterize the caries further, spectral changes were observed in PO 42 vibrations arising from hydroxyapa- tite of mineralized tooth tissue. Examination of various ratios of PO 42 n 2 , n 3 , n 4 vibrations against the n 1 vibration showed consistent in- creases in carious lesions compared to sound enamel. The changes were attributed to demineralization-induced alterations of enamel crystallite morphology and/or orientation. OCT imaging is useful for screening carious sites and determining lesion depth, with Raman spectroscopy providing biochemical confirmation of caries. The com- bination has potential for development into a new fiber-optic diagnos- tic tool enabling dentists to identify early caries lesions with greater sensitivity and specificity. © 2005 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engi

    Dietary garlic and hip osteoarthritis: evidence of a protective effect and putative mechanism of action

    Background Patterns of food intake and prevalent osteoarthritis of the hand, hip, and knee were studied using the twin design to limit the effect of confounding factors. Compounds found in associated food groups were further studied in vitro. Methods Cross-sectional study conducted in a large population-based volunteer cohort of twins. Food intake was evaluated using the Food Frequency Questionnaire; OA was determined using plain radiographs. Analyses were adjusted for age, BMI and physical activity. Subsequent in vitro studies examined the effects of allium-derived compounds on the expression of matrix-degrading proteases in SW1353 chondrosarcoma cells. Results Data were available, depending on phenotype, for 654-1082 of 1086 female twins (median age 58.9 years; range 46-77). Trends in dietary analysis revealed a specific pattern of dietary intake, that high in fruit and vegetables, showed an inverse association with hip OA (p = 0.022). Consumption of 'non-citrus fruit' (p = 0.015) and 'alliums' (p = 0.029) had the strongest protective effect. Alliums contain diallyl disulphide which was shown to abrogate cytokine-induced matrix metalloproteinase expression. Conclusions Studies of diet are notorious for their confounding by lifestyle effects. While taking account of BMI, the data show an independent effect of a diet high in fruit and vegetables, suggesting it to be protective against radiographic hip OA. Furthermore, diallyl disulphide, a compound found in garlic and other alliums, represses the expression of matrix-degrading proteases in chondrocyte-like cells, providing a potential mechanism of action
