Integrated voice and visual systems research topics
A series of studies was performed to investigate factors of helicopter speech and visual system design and measure the effects of these factors on human performance, both for pilots and non-pilots. The findings and conclusions of these studies were applied by the U.S. Army to the design of the Army's next generation threat warning system for helicopters and to the linguistic functional requirements for a joint Army/NASA flightworthy, experimental speech generation and recognition system
Counter-urbanisation, housing and households in Cornwall
Over the last thirty years Cornwall has experienced a dramatic population expansion.
Population growth has had effects in many areas, but particularly in housing. The
increased demand for housing from those migrating into the area has inflated house prices,
yet the Cornish economy is afflicted by low wage levels and high unemployment rates,
creating a `mortgage gap' for long term residents. This coupled with the decline in
availability of both publicly and privately rented accommodation has resulted in what has
been termed a housing `crisis' (George 1987, Deacon et al. 1988, Lennon 1991, Williams
1993).
It has been suggested that this `crisis' has resulted in a `two tier' housing system, recent inmigrants
generally enjoying better housing chances than longer term residents of Cornwall
(Williams, 1993). Furthermore, it has been suggested that much of Cornwall's housing
problems remain `hidden' having been absorbed into existing household structures.
The research presented in this thesis aimed to assess the housing circumstances and
chances of both recent in-migrant and long-term residents in order to discover if they do in
fact differ. Whether or not housing need was being absorbed into existing household
structures was also explored, as were the reasons why.
It was found that the housing circumstances and chances of recent in-migrants are generally
better than those of long-term residents and that this was as a result of the distinctly
different economic characteristics of the groups. Housing need was also found to be to a
large extent 'concealed'. This was mainly young adults who were unable to set up
independent households as a result of a lack of affordable accommodation. The research
suggests that families remain a source of support and assistance to their members in
relation to housing, but that the type of support given varies according to occupational class
and economic means which might serve to disadvantage long-term residents still further in
the future.University Research Studentship (HEFCE) with

A Study of The Current Costs of Public Higher Education in New Mexico For 1949-1950
The purpose of this study is the presentation and comparison of certain important aspects of revenues and costs of higher education in New Mexico for the fiscal year which began July 1, 1949 and ended June 30, 1950. A more complete evaluation of the problems and accomplishments of these institutions can be made after studying those factors which affect income and costs. Enrollment statistics for each school can be considered a basic factor in discussing income and expenditures. Not only does the number of students have much to do with the amount of money received and with the type of expenditures made, but it also provides an effective unit of comparison. An analysis of the income and expenditure figures is presented in this paper as total dollars, as percentages, and on a per student basis in order to better visualize the problems involved
The impact of increased grid resolution on the mixed layer depth variability in the South Atlantic Ocean and Southern Ocean
The Southern Ocean plays a major role in global climate system. An understanding of Southern Ocean dynamics allows for a better understanding of the carbon cycle and possible future climate conditions. Earth System Models are used to study Southern Ocean dynamics and are currently producing reliable global annual carbon uptake but have limiting seasonal abilities. These models produce dependable results on a global scale, with more conflicting results on a basin scale. Here we study the impact of mesoscale variability on the Mixed Layer Depth in the Sub-Tropical and Sub-Antarctic Zone of the South Atlantic. The region is hugely impacted by the mesoscale variability as a result of the South African boundary currents. We use two regional simulations both at 1/4o resolution, with one model containing online nested child domain over the South African boundary currents (1/12o resolution). The inter-annual simulations both use the same forcing which allow for a comparison study between the two models. Both the nested and standalone model are able to capture the large scale oceanographic features in the domain. The biggest difference is seen in the Agulhas Current region, where the nested model simulates better mesoscale features, resulting in a fairly accurate position of the Agulhas retroflection and return current. The standalone model contains a high temperature and salinity bias which influences the vertical structure of the water column. Both models are able to simulate the seasonality of the MLD in the Sub-Tropical and Sub-Antarctic Zone in the Atlantic sector. The models overestimate MLD in regions closer to the boundary currents. In the nested model the presence of increased mesoscale features promotes stratification of the water column. The differences seen in the MLD of the two models are linked to the temperature and salinity bias in the standalone model as well as the increased mesoscale variability in the nested model
Paradigm Shift in African American Funeral Customs: Looking through the Lens of Oral History and Consumer Culture
The degree attainment of college students is a critical issue that institutions of higher education are considering. Colleges want to improve their retention, progression, and graduation rates for all students. Over the past decades men, based on the literature reviewed, have earned fewer degrees than women. In addition, men are not enrolling in college at the same rates as women. This study uses the NELS Database to analyze the factors that contribute to the degree attainment of men. The research used a logit model to determine the probability for the significant factors
