SAGE 1 data user's guide
A guide for using the data products from the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment 1 (SAGE 1) for scientific investigations of stratospheric chemistry related to aerosol, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, dynamics, and climate change is presented. A detailed description of the aerosol profile tape, the ozone profile tape, and the nitrogen dioxide profile tape is included. These tapes are the SAGE 1 data products containing aerosol extinction data and ozone and nitrogen dioxide concentration data for use in the different scientific investigations. Brief descriptions of the instrument operation, data collection, processing, and validation, and some of the scientific analyses that were conducted are also included

High-fat feeding reprograms maternal energy metabolism and induces long-term postpartum obesity in mice.
BackgroundExcessive gestational weight gain (EGWG) closely associates with postpartum obesity. However, the causal role of EGWG in postpartum obesity has not been experimentally verified. The objective of this study was to determine whether and how EGWG causes long-term postpartum obesity.MethodsC57BL/6 mice were fed with high-fat diet during gestation (HFFDG) or control chow, then their body composition and energy metabolism were monitored after delivery.ResultsWe found that HFFDG significantly increased gestational weight gain. After delivery, adiposity of HFFDG-treated mice (Preg-HF) quickly recovered to the levels of controls. However, 3 months after parturition, Preg-HF mice started to gain significantly more body fat even with regular chow. The increase of body fat of Preg-HF mice was progressive with aging and by 9 months after delivery had increased 2-fold above the levels of controls. The expansion of white adipose tissue (WAT) of Preg-HF mice was manifested by hyperplasia in visceral fat and hypertrophy in subcutaneous fat. Preg-HF mice developed low energy expenditure and UCP1 expression in interscapular brown adipose tissue (iBAT) in later life. Although blood estrogen concentrations were similar between Preg-HF and control mice, a significant decrease in estrogen receptor α (ERα) expression and hypermethylation of the ERα promoter was detected in the fat of Preg-HF mice 9 months after delivery. Interestingly, hypermethylation of ERα promoter and low ERα expression were only detected in adipocyte progenitor cells in both iBAT and WAT of Preg-HF mice at the end of gestation.ConclusionsThese results demonstrate that HFFDG causes long-term postpartum obesity independent of early postpartum fat retention. This study also suggests that HFFDG adversely programs long-term postpartum energy metabolism by epigenetically reducing estrogen signaling in both BAT and WAT
Collecting, analyzing and archiving of ground based infrared solar spectra obtained from several locations
The infrared solar spectrum as observed from the ground under high resolution contains thousands of absorption lines. The majority of these lines are due to compounds that are present in the Earth's atmosphere. Ground based infrared solar spectra contain information concerning the composition of the atmosphere at the time the spectra were obtained. The objective of this program is to record solar spectra from various ground locations, and to analyze and archive these spectra. The analysis consists of determining, for as many of the absorption lines as possible, the molecular species responsible for the absorption, and to verify that current models of infrared transmission match the observed spectra. Archiving is an important part of the program, since a number of the features in the spectra have not been identified. At some later time, when the features are identified, it will be possible to determine the amount of that compound that was present in the atmosphere at the time the spectrum was taken
Supernova Remnants and Star Formation in the Large Magellanic Cloud
It has often been suggested that supernova remnants (SNRs) can trigger star
formation. To investigate the relationship between SNRs and star formation, we
have examined the known sample of 45 SNRs in the Large Magellanic Cloud to
search for associated young stellar objects (YSOs) and molecular clouds. We
find seven SNRs associated with both YSOs and molecular clouds, three SNRs
associated with YSOs but not molecular clouds, and eight SNRs near molecular
clouds but not associated with YSOs. Among the 10 SNRs associated with YSOs,
the association between the YSOs and SNRs can be either rejected or cannot be
convincingly established for eight cases. Only two SNRs have YSOs closely
aligned along their rims; however, the time elapsed since the SNR began to
interact with the YSOs' natal clouds is much shorter than the contraction
timescales of the YSOs, and thus we do not see any evidence of SNR-triggered
star formation in the LMC. The 15 SNRs that are near molecular clouds may
trigger star formation in the future when the SNR shocks have slowed down to
<45 km/s. We discuss how SNRs can alter the physical properties and abundances
of YSOs.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, Accepted for publication in the August

Patient-Reported Outcomes and Factors Associated With Patient Satisfaction After Surgical Treatment of Facial Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer
The Veterans Affairs Medical Center's Contribution to Plastic Surgery Education
Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers have played a major role in graduate medical education since the 1940s. Currently, the VA health system operates 168 medical centers across the United States and supports the clinical training of more than 41 200 medical residents annually. Teaching hospitals within the VA provide subspecialty medical and surgical care and perform the majority of complex and high-risk surgical procedures.
The diversity of pathologic conditions requiring a plastic surgery skill set are prominent within the VA population: cancer reconstruction, hand surgery, facial fractures, and burn care. Educational opportunities are ample. Plastic surgery residents in university-based training programs typically rotate at the VA hospital for several months each year. This study examines the relationship between the plastic surgery service and resident education within the VA hospitals
SIGMA: A System for Integrative Genomic Microarray Analysis of Cancer Genomes
BACKGROUND: The prevalence of high resolution profiling of genomes has created a need for the integrative analysis of information generated from multiple methodologies and platforms. Although the majority of data in the public domain are gene expression profiles, and expression analysis software are available, the increase of array CGH studies has enabled integration of high throughput genomic and gene expression datasets. However, tools for direct mining and analysis of array CGH data are limited. Hence, there is a great need for analytical and display software tailored to cross platform integrative analysis of cancer genomes. RESULTS: We have created a user-friendly java application to facilitate sophisticated visualization and analysis such as cross-tumor and cross-platform comparisons. To demonstrate the utility of this software, we assembled array CGH data representing Affymetrix SNP chip, Stanford cDNA arrays and whole genome tiling path array platforms for cross comparison. This cancer genome database contains 267 profiles from commonly used cancer cell lines representing 14 different tissue types. CONCLUSION: In this study we have developed an application for the visualization and analysis of data from high resolution array CGH platforms that can be adapted for analysis of multiple types of high throughput genomic datasets. Furthermore, we invite researchers using array CGH technology to deposit both their raw and processed data, as this will be a continually expanding database of cancer genomes. Thirty-two Goldbach Variations
We give thirty-two diverse proofs of a small mathematical gem--the
fundamental Euler sum identity zeta(2,1)=zeta(3) =8zeta(\bar 2,1). We also
discuss various generalizations for multiple harmonic (Euler) sums and some of
their many connections, thereby illustrating both the wide variety of
techniques fruitfully used to study such sums and the attraction of their
study.Comment: v1: 34 pages AMSLaTeX. v2: 41 pages AMSLaTeX. New introductory
