    Axiomatic Foundations of Efficiency Measurement on Data-Generated Technologies

    Dmitruk and Koshevoy [1991 JET] provided a complete characterization of the class of technologies for which there exists an efficiency index satisfying the Fare-Lovell [1978 JET] axioms. The technologies implicit in the standard mathematical-programming methods of measuring efficiency, data envelopment analysis (DEA) and free-disposal-hull (FDH) analysis, belong to this class. We assess the ability of three well-known indexes, the Debreu-Farrell index, the Fare-Lovell index, and the Zieschang index, to satisfy not only the Fare-Lovell axioms but also continuity axioms (for technologies as well as input quantities), on this restricted class of technologies. Our principal conclusions are that (a) restriction to these data-based technologies adds continuity in input quantities to the properties satisfied by the Fare-Lovell and the Zieschang indexes (thus eliminating a salient advantage of the Debreu-Farrell index), but (b) none of the indexes satisfies all Fare-Lovell axioms (nor all continuity axioms) on either DEA or FDH technologies, and hence (c) trade-offs among the indexes remain.     Longitudinal investigation of medical student perceptions of a video-based guided study resource used to facilitate an eight week module in medicine

    We use an action research approach to evaluate three successive cohorts of medical student perceptions of using a multi-faceted video-based guided study resource which provides academic (skills-based), social (motivation-based) and professional (clinical-based) interventions aimed at facilitating and enriching learning across an eight week module in the second year of the MBChB medical degree. Our findings show that whilst students value these video resources both as a revision tool and an aid to learning during the semester, they have specific critiques about several areas which would improve the project. We interpret our data to evidence a tangible beneficial argument for the use video-based learning objects to support student learning that is reliably reaffirmed by our longitudinal data

    ECONOMIC AND SOCIO-ENVIRONMENTAL EVALUATION OF PREDATOR CONTROL ALTERNATIVES

    A simulation model containing both economic (monetary) and socio-environmental (value index) components is developed in a case study of predator control alternatives. Particular emphasis is given to the description and justification of the socio-economic model. The economic model is estimated in terms of producers’ and consumers’ surpluses. The empirical tradeoff function developed suggests that alternatives to recent predator control programs exist that could be “better” for both general public and producer interests.     An Examination of Sport Motivation, Motivational Climate, and Athlete Burnout within the Developmental Model of Sport Participation

    Young adults’ retrospective recall of high school sport motivations, motivational climate, and burnout were compared based on whether they fit the “specializer” or “sampler” track within the Developmental Model of Sport Participation (DMSP, CĂŽtĂ© & Fraser-Thomas, 2007). College students (N = 156) fitting these two DMSP tracks completed their recall of sport motivations (Sport Motivation Scale-II), motivational climate (Motivational Climate Scale for Youth Sports) and athlete burnout (Athlete Burnout Questionnaire). Separate one-way MANOVAs comparing samplers (n = 113) and specializers (n = 43) on these variables were not significant (p > .05). Multiple regression analyses showed amotivation and intrinsic regulation were significant positive and negative predictors (respectively) of burnout dimensions. Performance climate was predictive of exhaustion and sport devaluation, while mastery climate negatively predicted reduced sense of accomplishment. Although Self-Determination Theory was further supported in examining burnout, lack of differences across DMSP track suggests that samplers and specializers in non-elite, amateur youth sport settings do not differ in burnout

    The Effect of Music Genre on Information Integration

    The present study experimentally investigated the performance effect of listening to different music genres while completing a computer-based information integration task. Participants were randomly assigned to music genre groups of Instrumental, Lyrical, and Electronica, plus a control group that did not hear any music. Given the data collected at this point and feedback from participants, more research is required to better understand the impact of music genre on cognitive tasks that direct or distract attention. Thus, we have decided to extend our participant data collection for another week. This additional data will be instrumental to our study
