Learning in a Reggio-Inspired Reuse Center

What would children\u27s learning look like in the Child Development Center\u27s Re-Use Center if teachers, parents, and children could collaborate around the learning? This action research collaboration between a professor and a graduate student/teacher, examines the process the graduate student/teacher goes through as she documents the re-use center narratives of a small group of young children. A re-use center is likened to Reggio Emilia, Italy\u27s Remida Center as a repository for found, rescued and repurposed materials. This center finds new meanings for discarded items destined for landfills and incinerators. The findings reveal stories of language, literacy and social development as well as explore how intentional collaboration can enhance project planning. Conclusions reveal that big questions for teachers, rich dialogue in reuse contexts for learning, and flexibility with participants are essential to collaborative learning in the reuse center

The residue fields of a zero-dimensional ring

AbstractGilmer and Heinzer have considered the question: For an indexed family of fields oK = {Kα}αgEA, under what conditions does there exist a zero-dimensional ring R (always commutative with unity) such that oK is up to isomorphism the family of residue fields {RMα}αgEA of R? If oK is the family of residue fields of a zero-dimensional ring R, then the associated bijection from the index set A to the spectrum of R (with the Zariski topology) gives A the topology of a Boolean space. The present paper considers the following question: Given a field F, a Boolean space X and a family {Kx}xgEX of extension fields of F, under what conditions does there exist a zero-dimensional F-algebra R such that oK is up to F-isomorphism the family of residue fields of R and the associated bijection from X to Spec(R) is a homeomorphism? A necessary condition is that given x in X and any finite extension E of F in Kx, there exist a neighborhood V of x and, for each y in V, an F-embedding of E into Ky. We prove several partial converses of this result, under hypotheses which allow the “straightening” of the F-embeddings to make them compatible. We give particular attention to the cases where X has only one accumulation point and where X is countable; and we provide several examples

Rebuilding relationships on coral reefs: Coral bleaching knowledge-sharing to aid adaptation planning for reef users: Bleaching emergence on reefs demonstrates the need to consider reef scale and accessibility when preparing for, and responding to, coral bleaching

Coral bleaching has impacted reefs worldwide and the predictions of near-annual bleaching from over two decades ago have now been realized. While technology currently provides the means to predict large-scale bleaching, predicting reef-scale and within-reef patterns in real-time for all reef users is limited. In 2020, heat stress across the Great Barrier Reef underpinned the region's third bleaching event in 5 years. Here we review the heterogeneous emergence of bleaching across Heron Island reef habitats and discuss the oceanographic drivers that underpinned variable bleaching emergence. We do so as a case study to highlight how reef end-user groups who engage with coral reefs in different ways require targeted guidance for how, and when, to alter their use of coral reefs in response to bleaching events. Our case study of coral bleaching emergence demonstrates how within-reef scale nowcasting of coral bleaching could aid the development of accessible and equitable bleaching response strategies on coral reefs. Population Health Solutions for Assessing Cognitive Impairment in Geriatric Patients.

In December 2017, the National Academy of Neuropsychology convened an interorganizational Summit on Population Health Solutions for Assessing Cognitive Impairment in Geriatric Patients in Denver, Colorado. The Summit brought together representatives of a broad range of stakeholders invested in the care of older adults to focus on the topic of cognitive health and aging. Summit participants specifically examined questions of who should be screened for cognitive impairment and how they should be screened in medical settings. This is important in the context of an acute illness given that the presence of cognitive impairment can have significant implications for care and for the management of concomitant diseases as well as pose a major risk factor for dementia. Participants arrived at general principles to guide future screening approaches in medical populations and identified knowledge gaps to direct future research. Key learning points of the summit included: recognizing the importance of educating patients and healthcare providers about the value of assessing current and baseline cognition;emphasizing that any screening tool must be appropriately normalized and validated in the population in which it is used to obtain accurate information, including considerations of language, cultural factors, and education; andrecognizing the great potential, with appropriate caveats, of electronic health records to augment cognitive screening and tracking of changes in cognitive health over time
