    During the first quarter of the twentieth century, Dr. John George Gehring treated hundreds of patients for stress, anxiety, and depression at his home in Bethel,Maine. Employing a pragmatic mix of hypnotism, medication, talk therapy, and behavior modification, Gehring attracted famous writers, academics, philanthropists, politicians, and socialites from around the U.S. Although he wrote and spoke about his methods, Gehring did not found a school of therapy or have a great deal of professional influence, but he had a sizeable impact on the state of Maine through the philanthropy of one of his patients, William Bingham II, whose visits to Gehring’s Bethel clinic are part of a pattern of therapeutic tourism that continues to the present

    Post-natal Survival of Raccoons in Relation to Female Age and Denning Behavior

    We measured post-natal survival of radio-collared raccoons 1-5 months old in southwest Iowa, 1988-1989. We compared survival of young nurtured by yearling and adult females and related den site selection to survival functions using proportional hazards models. Adult females used upland and farmstead habitats note frequently than yearlings, whereas yearling females used lowland habitats note frequently. Tree cavities and beds on the ground were used most frequently. Adult females denned in buildings 13% of the time and in holes in the ground 9.5% of the time, whereas yearlings frequently tested with litters in beds on the ground (31%). Microhab1tat characteristics including such factors as tree size, surrounding vegetation, and den characteristics had no influence on use. We observed 9 mortalities of 64 earmarked young, 4 caused by dogs, the remaining including vehicle collisions, predation, and disease. All mortalities occurred after litters moved from their natal den to a post-natal den site. We could not show significant differences in survival of young nurtured by yearling and adult females and the best estimate of post-natal survival of raccoons from 22 May to 15 September was 0.65. Post-natal survival was positively influenced by the variety of habitats and den types used by females and their young. Denning habitat selection and post-natal survival of young, particularly those of adult females, may have an important influence on population levels

    On the number of representations providing noiseless subsystems

    This paper studies the combinatoric structure of the set of all representations, up to equivalence, of a finite-dimensional semisimple Lie algebra. This has intrinsic interest as a previously unsolved problem in representation theory, and also has applications to the understanding of quantum decoherence. We prove that for Hilbert spaces of sufficiently high dimension, decoherence-free subspaces exist for almost all representations of the error algebra. For decoherence-free subsystems, we plot the function fd(n)f_d(n) which is the fraction of all dd-dimensional quantum systems which preserve nn bits of information through DF subsystems, and note that this function fits an inverse beta distribution.     Polynomial Identities, Indices, and Duality for the N=1 Superconformal Model SM(2,4\nu)

    We prove polynomial identities for the N=1 superconformal model SM(2,4\nu) which generalize and extend the known Fermi/Bose character identities. Our proof uses the q-trinomial coefficients of Andrews and Baxter on the bosonic side and a recently introduced very general method of producing recursion relations for q-series on the fermionic side. We use these polynomials to demonstrate a dual relation under q \rightarrow q^{-1} between SM(2,4\nu) and M(2\nu-1,4\nu).
