    Synthesis and surface modification of nanorods for investigation into organic-inorganic hybrid materials

    The research presented in this thesis is focused towards the synthesis of a new kind of giant hybrid liquid crystal consisting of organic semiconductor molecules surrounding an inorganic semiconductor with a nanorod shape with the potential for use in photovoltaic solar cells. It is intended that such materials will combine the good processing properties of liquid crystals, such as low cost, alignment and photolithographic patterning, with the efficient light emission and electrical conductivity of inorganic semiconductors.Several syntheses of gold and cadmium sulphide nanorods were performed and optimised in order to increase the yield, aspect ratio and monodispersity of nanorods formed. Localised alignment according to Onsager theory was observed for nanorods produced with sufficient aspect ratio and concentration.Investigations into the formation of self-assembled monolayers were carried out using gold nanorods and alkanethiols. Organic synthesis of thiol-terminated ligand groups for attachment to both gold and cadmium sulphide nanorods was performed, and such materials were used for investigations into surface modification of the synthesised nanorods. However, no liquid crystallinity was observed for the organic-functionalised nanorods produced during these investigations.Metal (II) phthalocyanines were used to investigate the formation of chromonic liquid crystalline phases and demonstrated the possibility for an alternative route in producing hybrid inorganic-organic nanorod-like systems

    The Board of Education of the Memphis City Schools established Memphis Veterans Institute in September, 1945, for the purpose of providing training facilities for World War Two veterans. The Board recognized the possible problems with which the school system might be confronted should an attempt be made to enroll a large number of veterans in its regular school system. The writer records, in this thesis, the results of a study of the training of World War Two veterans in Memphis Veterans Institute operated by the Board of Education of the Memphis City Schools in Memphis, Tennessee. The study covers legislation of the Congress relative to educational aid to veterans of the Second World War, minutes of the Board of Education of the Memphis City Schools, and an analysis of the personnel records of each veteran enrolled in the program with reference to length of enrollment, accomplishments and areas in which veterans were trained. It is hoped that this study may be helpful to those of the future who may be confronted with the responsibility of formulating and conducting a training program such as school administrators had following World War Two. It should be helpful to any who may find it necessary or desirable to evaluate special training programs for special groups

    A study of helicopter roll control effectiveness based on closed-loop task performance measurement and modeling is presented. Roll control critieria are based on task margin, the excess of vehicle task performance capability over the pilot's task performance demand. Appropriate helicopter roll axis dynamic models are defined for use with analytic models for task performance. Both near-earth and up-and-away large-amplitude maneuvering phases are considered. The results of in-flight and moving-base simulation measurements are presented to support the roll control effectiveness criteria offered.     Camouflaging in an everyday social context:An interpersonal recall study

    Camouflaging is a social phenomenon operating within everyday social interactions of autistic and non-autistic people. The current study explored autistic adults’ camouflaging in an everyday social context via interpersonal process recall methodology (Kegan, 1969). A total of 17 autistic adults (8 females, 6 males and 3 agender/gender-neutral individuals) participated in a 10-min controlled social task designed to replicate a common day-to-day social situation. Participants then watched a video of their interaction with a researcher, actively identifying instances of camouflaging and discussing their experiences of camouflaging. Using thematic analysis, four themes were generated: (1) a strong desire for, yet uncertainty in, securing social acceptance and connection; (2) camouflaging, developed over time, as a means to achieve social acceptance and connection; (3) experiencing intrapersonal and interpersonal camouflaging consequences during social interactions; and (4) authentic socialising as an alternative to camouflaging. These findings are discussed with reference to the existing literature on stigma management outside the field of autism. LAY ABSTRACT: Many autistic people report that, despite personal costs, they use strategies to hide their autistic characteristics or appear non-autistic at work, school or university, when speaking with health professionals, or while socialising with certain friends and family members. These strategies are often referred to as camouflaging. This study explores camouflaging during everyday social interactions. A total of 17 autistic adults were filmed taking part in a common everyday social situation – a conversation with a stranger. They then watched the video of this conversation with a researcher and answered questions about camouflaging. These autistic people told us that they (1) had a strong desire to socialise with and be valued by other people but, because of negative past experiences, they often felt unsure about their ability to do so; (2) used camouflaging to help them to socialise and be valued by others; (3) experienced negative consequences when camouflaging (e.g. fatigue, anxiety and difficulties in friendships); and (4) sometimes socialised in more autistic ways instead of camouflaging. This study shows us how autistic people often change their behaviour because of the way they are treated by nonautistic people and that autistic people may benefit from programmes that help them to socialise in more authentically autistic ways, but only if their autistic social behaviour is met with understanding and acceptance from non-autistic people

The PAR is therefore constructed based jointly on implemented motion capabilities of virtual human figures and linguistic requirements for instruction interpretation.     Comparing the Dictyostelium and Entamoeba Genomes Reveals an Ancient Split in the Conosa Lineage

    The Amoebozoa are a sister clade to the fungi and the animals, but are poorly sampled for completely sequenced genomes. The social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum and amitochondriate pathogen Entamoeba histolytica are the first Amoebozoa with genomes completely sequenced. Both organisms are classified under the Conosa subphylum. To identify Amoebozoa-specific genomic elements, we compared these two genomes to each other and to other eukaryotic genomes. An expanded phylogenetic tree built from the complete predicted proteomes of 23 eukaryotes places the two amoebae in the same lineage, although the divergence is estimated to be greater than that between animals and fungi, and probably happened shortly after the Amoebozoa split from the opisthokont lineage. Most of the 1,500 orthologous gene families shared between the two amoebae are also shared with plant, animal, and fungal genomes. We found that only 42 gene families are distinct to the amoeba lineage; among these are a large number of proteins that contain repeats of the FNIP domain, and a putative transcription factor essential for proper cell type differentiation in D. discoideum. These Amoebozoa-specific genes may be useful in the design of novel diagnostics and therapies for amoebal pathologies

    Ab Initio Modeling of the Herpesvirus VP26 Core Domain Assessed by CryoEM Density

    Efforts in structural biology have targeted the systematic determination of all protein structures through experimental determination or modeling. In recent years, 3-D electron cryomicroscopy (cryoEM) has assumed an increasingly important role in determining the structures of these large macromolecular assemblies to intermediate resolutions (6–10 Å). While these structures provide a snapshot of the assembly and its components in well-defined functional states, the resolution limits the ability to build accurate structural models. In contrast, sequence-based modeling techniques are capable of producing relatively robust structural models for isolated proteins or domains. In this work, we developed and applied a hybrid modeling approach, utilizing cryoEM density and ab initio modeling to produce a structural model for the core domain of a herpesvirus structural protein, VP26. Specifically, this method, first tested on simulated data, utilizes the cryoEM density map as a geometrical constraint in identifying the most native-like models from a gallery of models generated by ab initio modeling. The resulting model for the core domain of VP26, based on the 8.5-Å resolution herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) capsid cryoEM structure and mutational data, exhibited a novel fold. Additionally, the core domain of VP26 appeared to have a complementary interface to the known upper-domain structure of VP5, its cognate binding partner. While this new model provides for a better understanding of the assembly and interactions of VP26 in HSV-1, the approach itself may have broader applications in modeling the components of large macromolecular assemblies

    Biexponential diffusion decay in formalin-fixed prostate tissue: Preliminary findings

    Magnetic resonance microimaging was used to measure diffusion decay over an extended b-factor range in a formalin-fixed normal prostate sample and a Gleason pattern 3+4 cancer tissue sample. The coefficients of biexponential fits to diffusion decay data from 1600 voxels of dimension 160 x 160 x 160 mu m3 in each sample were correlated with underlying epithelial and stromal compartment partial volumes estimated from high-resolution apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) data (40 x 40 x 40 mu m3 voxels) from the same tissue. In the normal tissue sample, the signal fractions of the low and high ADC components of the biexponential fits correlated linearly with partial volumes of epithelial tissue (R2 = 0.6) and stromal tissue (R2 = 0.5), respectively. Similar but weaker correlations were observed in the cancer sample. Epithelium-containing high spatial resolution voxels appeared to be composed of similar to 60% low ADC and similar to 40% high ADC component. Stromal voxels appeared to be composed of similar to 20% low ADC and similar to 80% high ADC component. This preliminary report suggests that distinctly different diffusion properties in microscopically adjacent cell types contribute to the multiexponential diffusion decay phenomenon in prostate tissue.
