A prototype system for detecting the radio-frequency pulse associated with cosmic ray air showers
The development of a system to detect the radio-frequency (RF) pulse
associated with extensive air showers of cosmic rays is described. This work
was performed at the CASA/MIA array in Utah, with the intention of designing
equipment that can be used in conjunction with the Auger Giant Array. A small
subset of data (less than 40 out of a total of 600 hours of running time),
taken under low-noise conditions, permitted upper limits to be placed on the
rate for pulses accompanying showers of energies around eV.Comment: 53 pages, LaTeX, 19 figures, published in Nuclear Instruments and

Grandparents in Kinship Care: Help or Hindrance to Family Preservation
The phenomenon of grandparents and other relatives raising children is a tradition rooted in the African American culture. However, a substantial increase in the number of relatives raising children has drawn attention to the child welfare system. Many of the biological parents are incarcerated for drugs or suffering from other social ills. Kinship care is an important component of family preservation and prevents court intervention based on child protection concerns and avoids formal placement of children in the child welfare system (Wilkerson, 1999). The child welfare system, however, is not conducive to this phenomenon. Placing children with grandparents and relatives allows them to live with people they know and trust; reduces the initial trauma of living with unknown persons; supports the transmission of identity, culture, and ethnicity; facilitates connections with brothers and sisters, and strengthens a family’s ability to provide the support they need
SEGMENTALCOORDINATIONAND TEMPORAL STRUCTURE OF THE VOLLEYBALL PIKE
In the game ofvol1eyball, the spike is one ofthe most difficult
and demanding techniques to master. The athlete is expect4ed to jump and hit a ball with maximum force and accuracy at the approximate peak of the jump. Prsala (1982) identified four phases in the analysis of the spike: the approach, preparation, hitting, and landing. The approach involves t 0 or three controlled running strides, a transitional last step to prepare for the transfer ofhorizontal momentum to vertical momentum, and a two foot vertical jump. In the preparatory phase the striking arm is swung upward in an abduct d and laterally rotated position. The elbow is fle ed at approximately 90 degrees and the wrist hyperextended. During the hitting phase, the shoulder is elevated; the upper arm is inwardly rotated and a ducted; the forearm is extended at the elbow and the wrist is flexed. The athl te absorbs the downward momentum by flexing the joints of the lower extremities when landing
Development of a validation model for the defense meteorological satellite program's special sensor microwave imager
The Defence Meteorological Space Program's (DMSP) Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I), an operational wind speed algorithm was developed. The algorithm is based on the D-matrix approach which seeks a linear relationship between measured SSM/I brightness temperatures and environmental parameters. D-matrix performance was validated by comparing algorithm derived wind speeds with near-simultaneous and co-located measurements made by off-shore ocean buoys. Other topics include error budget modeling, alternate wind speed algorithms, and D-matrix performance with one or more inoperative SSM/I channels
Overlap of QRPA states based on ground states of different nuclei --mathematical properties and test calculations--
The overlap of the excited states in quasiparticle random-phase approximation
(QRPA) is calculated in order to simulate the overlap of the intermediate
nuclear states of the double-beta decay. Our basic idea is to use the
like-particle QRPA with the aid of the closure approximation and calculate the
overlap as rigorously as possible by making use of the explicit equation of the
QRPA ground state. The formulation is shown in detail, and the mathematical
properties of the overlap matrix are investigated. Two test calculations are
performed for relatively light nuclei with the Skyrme and volume delta-pairing
energy functionals. The validity of the truncations used in the calculation is
examined and confirmed.Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures, full paper following arXiv:1205.5354 and Phys.

Application of Remote Sensing to the Chesapeake Bay Region. Volume 2: Proceedings
A conference was held on the application of remote sensing to the Chesapeake Bay region. Copies of the papers, resource contributions, panel discussions, and reports of the working groups are presented
Application of Remote Sensing to the Chesapeake Bay Region. Volume 1: Executive summary
The proceedings are presented of a conference, jointly sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the University of Maryland. The purpose of the Conference was to assemble representatives of federal and state government agencies engaged in research on the condition and evolution of the Chesapeake Bay to compose a status report, to present current activities and future plans, and to recommend a long-range future course of policies and programs
Impact of Dietary Fat Source on Beef Display Life
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary fat source with modified distillers grains plus solubles (MDGS) on beef display life. Steers were fed either a corn control, full-fat MDGS, de-oiled MDGS, or de-oiled MDGS plus corn oil diet. Strip loins were aged for 2, 9, 16 and 23 days and placed under retail conditions for 7 days. Results suggest that feeding MDGS to cattle increases polyunsaturated fatty acid content of beef and has the potential to reduce beef color and lipid stability in comparison to corn diets. These data indicate that feeding MDGS to cattle may decrease beef display life. Addition of corn oil to de-oiled MDGS decreased redness and increased discoloration and lipid oxidation in comparison to corn control diets
Searches for neutrinoless double beta decay
Neutrinoless double beta decay is a lepton number violating process whose
observation would also establish that neutrinos are their own anti-particles.
There are many experimental efforts with a variety of techniques. Some (EXO,
Kamland-Zen, GERDA phase I and CANDLES) started take data in 2011 and EXO has
reported the first measurement of the half life for the double beta decay with
two neutrinos of Xe. The sensitivities of the different proposals are
reviewed.Comment: 8 pages, prepared for TAUP 201
