    [From Introduction] The ILO’s primary goals regarding disability are to prepare and empower people with disabilities to pursue their employment goals and facilitate access to work and job opportunities in open labour markets, while sensitising policy makers, trade unions and employers to these issues. The ILO’s mandate on disability issues is specified in the ILO Convention 159 (1983) on vocational rehabilitation and employment. No. 159 defines a disabled person as an individual whose prospects of securing, retaining, and advancing in suitable employment are substantially reduced as a result of a duly recognised physical or mental impairment. The Convention established the principle of equal treatment and employment for workers with disabilities

    A total of 107 cases (62 male and 45 female),with histologically proven malignant disease and all receiving cytotoxic therapy were studied.A brief review of the history of cancer chemotherapy is given > together with a detailed account of the principal agents currently available, methods and routes of administration, means of assessing response to treatment and the necessary routines of investigation.The results obtained are presented,mainly in tabular form. Assessment of response, incidence, severity, significance, mechanisms and management of toxic effects, the significance of hepatic metasÂŹ tases and causes of death in relation to oancer chemotherapy, are discussed in detail.Finally, the conclusions derived from the study of these cases are presented

    Can real-time visual feedback during gait retraining reduce metabolic demand for individuals with transtibial amputation?

    The metabolic demand of walking generally increases following lower extremity amputation. This study used real-time visual feedback to modify biomechanical factors linked to an elevated metabolic demand of walking in individuals with transtibial amputation. Eight persons with unilateral, traumatic transtibial amputation and 8 uninjured controls participated. Two separate bouts of real-time visual feedback were provided during a single session of gait retraining to reduce 1) center of mass sway and 2) thigh muscle activation magnitudes and duration. Baseline and post-intervention data were collected. Metabolic rate, heart rate, frontal plane center of mass sway, quadriceps and hamstrings muscle activity, and co-contraction indices were evaluated during steady state walking at a standardized speed. Visual feedback successfully decreased center of mass sway 12% (p = 0.006) and quadriceps activity 12% (p = 0.041); however, thigh muscle co-contraction indices were unchanged. Neither condition significantly affected metabolic rate during walking and heart rate increased with center-of-mass feedback. Metabolic rate, center of mass sway, and integrated quadriceps muscle activity were all not significantly different from controls. Attempts to modify gait to decrease metabolic demand may actually adversely increase the physiological effort of walking in individuals with lower extremity amputation who are young, active and approximate metabolic rates of able-bodied adults

    Sub-Hz line width diode lasers by stabilization to vibrationally and thermally compensated ULE Fabry-Perot cavities

    We achieved a 0.5 Hz optical beat note line width with ~ 0.1 Hz/s frequency drift at 972 nm between two external cavity diode lasers independently stabilized to two vertically mounted Fabry-Perot (FP) reference cavities. Vertical FP reference cavities are suspended in mid-plane such that the influence of vertical vibrations to the mirror separation is significantly suppressed. This makes the setup virtually immune for vertical vibrations that are more difficult to isolate than the horizontal vibrations. To compensate for thermal drifts the FP spacers are made from Ultra-Low-Expansion (ULE) glass which possesses a zero linear expansion coefficient. A new design using Peltier elements in vacuum allows operation at an optimal temperature where the quadratic temperature expansion of the ULE could be eliminated as well. The measured linear drift of such ULE FP cavity of 63 mHz/s was due to material aging and the residual frequency fluctuations were less than 40 Hz during 16 hours of measurement. Some part of the temperature-caused drift is attributed to the thermal expansion of the mirror coatings. High-frequency thermal fluctuations that cause vibrations of the mirror surfaces limit the stability of a well designed reference cavity. By comparing two similar laser systems we obtain an Allan instability of 2*10-15 between 0.1 and 10 s averaging time, which is close to the theoretical thermal noise limit.Comment: submitted to Applied Physics

    Impurity-assisted Andreev reflection at a spin-active half-metal-superconductor interface

    The Andreev reflection amplitude at a clean interface between a half-metallic ferromagnet (H) and a superconductor (S) for which the half metal's magnetization has a gradient perpendicular to the interface is proportional to the excitation energy Δ\varepsilon and vanishes at Δ=0\varepsilon=0 [B\'{e}ri {\em et al.}, Phys.\ Rev.\ B {\bf 79}, 024517 (2009)]. Here we show that the presence of impurities at or in the immediate vicinity of the HS interface leads to a finite Andreev reflection amplitude at Δ=0\varepsilon=0. This impurity-assisted Andreev reflection dominates the low-bias conductance of a HS junction and the Josephson current of an SHS junction in the long-junction limit.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure
