    Annual and solar-magnetic-cycle variations in the interplanetary magnetic field, 1926-1971

    The analysis of forty-five years of inferred interplanetary magnetic field polarity shows an annual variation and a variation of about twenty years, associated here with the solar magnetic cycle. On the average the phase of the annual variation of the interplanetary field changes about 2 and 2/3 years after sunspot maximum, i.e. for about ten consecutive years the predominant polarity of the interplanetary field is away from the sun during the six-month interval in which the earth is at southern heliographic latitudes. Then a change of phase occurs so that for about the next ten years the predominant polarity is toward the sun, while the earth is at southern heliographic latitudes. The annual variation changes its predominant polarity within a few days of the times when the heliographic latitude of the earth is zero

    The equatorial rotation rate of the photosphere was measured at effect data. It was found that scattered light has a large influence and must be taken into account properly. When this was done it was found that the rotation rate from Doppler shifts agreed very well with the rate found for sunspots. Short-term fluctuations in rotation rate (i.e. from day to day) were less than plus or minus 15 m/s and were thus within observational errors

    The origin of the warped heliospheric current sheet

    The warped heliospheric current sheet in early 1976 was calculated from the observed photospheric magnetic field using a potential field method. Comparisons with measurements of the interplanetary magnetic field polarity in early 1976 obtained at several locations in the heliosphere at Helios 1, Helios 2, Pioneer 11 and Earth show a rather detailed agreement between the computed current sheet and the observations. It appears that the large scale structure of the warped heliospheric current sheet is determined by the structure of the photospheric magnetic field, and that "ballerina skirt" effects may add small scale ripples

    The synoptic appearance of solar magnetic sectors is studied using 454 sector boundaries observed at earth during 1959-1973. The sectors are clearly visible in the photospheric magnetic field. Sector boundaries can be clearly identified as north-south running demarcation lines between regions of persistent magnetic polarity imbalances. These regions extend up to about 35 deg of latitude on both sides of the equator. They generally do not extend into the polar caps. The polar cap boundary can be identified as an east-west demarcation line marking the poleward limit of the sectors. The typical flux imbalance for a magnetic sector is about 4 x 10 to the 21st power Maxwells

    A physical mechanism for the prediction of the sunspot number during solar cycle 21

    On physical grounds it is suggested that the sun's polar field strength near a solar minimum is closely related to the following cycle's solar activity. Four methods of estimating the sun's polar magnetic field strength near solar minimum are employed to provide an estimate of cycle 21's yearly mean sunspot number at solar maximum of 140 plus or minus 20. This estimate is considered to be a first order attempt to predict the cycle's activity using one parameter of physical importance

    A five year outbreak of methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus phage type 53,85 in a regional neonatal unit

    We identified a 5-year outbreak of a methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) strain, affecting 202 babies on a neonatal unit, by routine weekly phage typing all S. aureus isolates. Multiple staged control measures including strict emphasis on hand hygiene, environmental and staff surveillance sampling, and application of topical hexachlorophane powder failed to end the outbreak. S. aureus PT 53,85 (SA5385) was found on opened packs of Stomahesive®, used as a neonatal skin protectant. Only following the implementation of aseptic handling of Stomahesive®, and the use of topical mupirocin for staff nasal carriers of SA5385, and for babies colonized or infected with S. aureus, did the isolation rate of SA5385 decline. DNA fingerprinting indicated that [gt-or-equal, slanted]95% of SA5385 isolates were clonal. In vitro death rates of SA5385 on Stomahesive® with human serum were significantly lower than on Stomahesive® alone (P = 0·04), and on cotton sheet with serum (P = 0·04), highlighting the potential of this material as a survival niche. Phage typing remains a valuable, inexpensive and simple method for monitoring nosocomial MSSA infection

    An Example of the Use of Interdigital PVDF Transducers to Generate and Receive a High Order Lamb Wave Mode in a Pipe

    From a non-destructive evaluation point of view, Lamb waves are a highly attractive means of inspecting a large area of a structure from a single point. Interdigital PVDF transducers have been used previously in signal processing applications [1] to generate acoustic waves in piezoelectric substrates. This paper in conjunction with that of Monkhouse et al [2] aims to provide an overview of the work accomplished so far at Imperial College in the use of interdigital PVDF transducers to transmit and receive Lamb waves in certain structures for non-destructive evaluation purposes. Interdigital PVDF transducers may be permanently bonded to either flat of curved surfaces and this attribute together with their low cost means that they are potentially suitable for“smart structure” applications

    Reciprocal Inhibition of Adiponectin and Innate Lung Immune Responses to Chitin and Aspergillus fumigatus

    Chitin is a structural biopolymer found in numerous organisms, including pathogenic fungi, and recognized as an immune-stimulating pathogen associated molecular pattern by pattern recognition molecules of the host immune system. However, programming and regulation of lung innate immunity to chitin inhalation in the context of inhalation of fungal pathogens such as Aspergillus fumigatus is complex and our understanding incomplete. Here we report that the systemic metabolism-regulating cytokine adiponectin is decreased in the lungs and serum of mice after chitin inhalation, with a concomitant decrease in surface expression of the adiponectin receptor AdipoR1 on lung leukocytes. Constitutive lung expression of acidic mammalian chitinase resulted in decreased inflammatory cytokine gene expression and neutrophil recruitment, but did not significantly affect lung adiponectin transcription. Exogenous recombinant adiponectin specifically dampened airway chitin-mediated eosinophil recruitment, while adiponectin deficiency resulted in increased airway eosinophils. The presence of adiponectin also resulted in decreased CCL11-mediated migration of bone marrow-derived eosinophils. In contrast to purified chitin, aspiration of viable conidia from the high chitin-expressing A. fumigatus isolate Af5517 resulted in increased neutrophil recruitment and inflammatory cytokine gene expression in adiponectin-deficient mice, while no significant changes were observed in response to the isolate Af293. Our results identify a novel role for the adiponectin pathway in inhibition of lung inflammatory responses to chitin and A. fumigatus inhalation
