Relationships between perceived teacher and peer support on motivation and achievement in high school mathematics
One hundred fourteen US students were surveyed to test a model of the relationships among motivational variables resulting from students’ first experiences as they transitioned from middle school to high school, and math achievement. Key malleable factors impacting motivation and achievement included perceived supportiveness of respondents’ teacher and peers. Longitudinal Path Analysis revealed that teacher support can impact students’ beliefs about the supportiveness of their peers, but that these social factors are mediated through students developing personal interest in mathematics to ultimately impact achievement
Análise do projeto Enem Chego Junto Chego Bem como estratégia de mobilização dos estudantes do ensino médio do estado do Ceará
This dissertation is developed under the Professional Master's Degree in
Education Management and Evaluation (PPGP) of the Center for Public Policy and
Education Evaluation at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (CAEd/UFJF). This work
studies the Enem Chego Junto Chego Bem project, created by the Ceará Department
of Education (Seduc/CE) in 2012, whose main objectives are to increase the academic
performance of high school students and encourage participation in the National High
School Exam (Enem), opening up possibilities of access to higher education. In this
sense, the research presented here is based on the following guiding question: what
are the strengths and weaknesses of the Enem Chego Junto Chego Bem Project, an
incentive policy adopted by Seduc/CE, to mobilize public school students to participate
in Enem and improvement in the performance of the state network in this exam? The
general objective outlined for this dissertation is to study the Enem Chego Junto Chego
Bem (ECJCB) project, with the aim of understanding its strengths and weaknesses, in
order to propose its improvement for greater reach and better results. The specific
objectives are: (i) to describe Enem Chego Junto Chego bem; (ii) analyze the
management elements that contributed to the development of the program; and (iii)
propose an Educational Action Plan, based on the strengths and weaknesses
identified in the field research. To achieve these goals, we sought a theoretical
framework that discusses the development of public educational policies and youth
protagonism, based on Hofling (2001), Riani (2013), Mainardes (2006), Condé (2012),
Ferretti, Zibas and Tartuce (2004), Costa (2007), Ribas (2004), Azevedo, Silva and
Medeiros (2015) and Rabin and Bacich (2018). As research instruments, semistructured interviews were carried out with three former education secretaries of the
CE and questionnaires were applied to the directors of state schools that offer
secondary education in the state. The results of this study show that the Enem Chego
Junto Chego Bem project is promising in the state and has a large network. However,
it has weaknesses that, if overcome, will be a successful initiative to be followed by
other education policies and departments in the country. The Educational Action Plan
proposes three actions for CE High School that, if implemented, intend to allow a better
monitoring of the last stage of basic education education in the state and will serve as
a basis for the implementation of other projects aimed at High School in others units
of the federation.
seguinte questão norteadora: quais as potencialidades e fragilidades do Projeto Enem
rede estadual nesse exame?
Mainardes (2006), Condé (2012), Ferretti, Zibas e Tartuce (2004), Costa (2007), Ribas
(2004), Azevedo, Silva e Medeiros (2015) e Rabin e Bacich (2018).
no país.
Geometric analysis of gaits and optimal control for three-link kinematic swimmers
Many robotic systems locomote using gaits - periodic changes of internal
shape, whose mechanical interaction with the robot's environment generate
characteristic net displacements. Prominent examples with two shape variables
are the low Reynolds number 3-link "Purcell swimmer" with inputs of 2 joint
angles and the "ideal fluid" swimmer. Gait analysis of these systems allows for
intelligent decisions to be made about the swimmer's locomotive properties,
increasing the potential for robotic autonomy. In this work, we present
comparative analysis of gait optimization using two different methods. The
first method is variational approach of "Pontryagin's maximum principle" (PMP)
from optimal control theory. We apply PMP for several variants of 3-link
swimmers, with and without incorporation of bounds on joint angles. The second
method is differential-geometric analysis of the gaits based on curvature
(total Lie bracket) of the local connection for 3-link swimmers. Using
optimized body-motion coordinates, contour plots of the curvature in shape
space give visualization that enables identifying distance-optimal gaits as
zero level sets. Combining and comparing results of the two methods enables
better understanding of changes in existence, shape and topology of
distance-optimal gait trajectories, depending on the swimmers' parameters.Comment: accepted to Automatica, 202
Fundamental social motives measured across forty-two cultures in two waves
How does psychology vary across human societies? The fundamental social motives framework adopts an evolutionary approach to capture the broad range of human social goals within a taxonomy of ancestrally recurring threats and opportunities. These motives—self-protection, disease avoidance, affiliation, status, mate acquisition, mate retention, and kin care—are high in fitness relevance and everyday salience, yet understudied cross-culturally. Here, we gathered data on these motives in 41 countries (N=15,885) in two cross-sectional waves, including 19 countries (N=11,095) for which data were gathered in both waves. Wave 1 was collected from 2016 through mid-2019 (32 countries, N=9353; 3537 male, 5574 female; Mage=24.58, SD=8.07). Wave 2 was collected from May through October 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic (N=6532; 2194 male, 4165 female; Mage=28.82, SD=11.49). These data can be used to assess differences and similarities in people’s fundamental social motives both across and within cultures, at different time points, and in relation to other commonly studied cultural indicators and outcomes
Segregation distortion of wild-type alleles at the Machado-Joseph disease locus: a study in normal families from the Azores islands (Portugal)
Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) is caused by an expansion of a triplet repeat with a CAG motif at the ATXN3 gene. The putative segregation ratio distortion (SRD) of alleles can play an important role in the non-Mendelian behaviour of triplet repeat loci. To study the stability and infer the segregation patterns of wild-type MJD alleles, the size of the (CAG)(n) tract was analysed in 102 normal sibships, representing 428 meioses. No mutational events were detected during the transmission of alleles. Segregation analysis showed that the smaller alleles were preferentially transmitted (56.9%). Considering maternal meioses alone, such preference was still detected (55.7%) but without statistical significance. A positive correlation was observed for the difference in length between the two alleles constituting the transmitters' genotype (D) and the frequency of transmission of the smaller alleles. The results suggest that small D values are not enough to modify the probability of allele transmission. When transmissions involving genotypes with D <or= 2 were excluded, SRD in favour of the smaller allele became significant for both maternal and paternal transmissions. Therefore, the genotypic composition of the transmitters in a sample to be analysed should influence the ability to detect SRD, acting as a confounding factor. This work was supported by ‘‘Projecto Regional Integrado— DMJ (PRI-DMJ)’’ (funded by Regional Government of the Azores), ‘‘Construyendo una Bio-Región Europea—Biopolis’’ (05/MAC/2.3/ C14, funded by PIC Interreg III B, Azores—Madeira—Canarias) and MANSEEBMO (MI.2.1/004/2005, funded by ‘‘Direcção Regional da Ciência e Tecnologia’’).
