    Antioxidant activity in commonly grown and consumed vegetables: a screening survey

    A diet rich in fruits and vegetables is associated with a reduced risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and certain types of cancer. This positive effect is related to bioactive phytochemicals found in plants.The vegetables were grown in the field or in greenhouses at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (59º40’N) during the years 2000-2002. The vegetables were harvested at commercial maturity and analysed for dry matter and antioxidant activity assessed by the FRAP (Ferric Reducing Ability of Plasma) assay. There was a large variation in antioxidant activity both between and within different species. The highest antioxidant activity was observed in kale, red cultivars of cabbage and table beet. The lowest antioxidant activity was observed in lettuce, cucumber, carrots and tomato. The vegetables possessing a red colour showed higher antioxidant activity with the exception of carrots and tomatoes

    Physio-chemical, mineral composition and antioxidant properties of Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) extract blended with tropical fruit juices

    Different varieties of fruit juices and beverages are available globally and there has been an increased consumption of fruit juices and beverages due to consumer awareness of nutritional and health benefits. Juice extracts are produced from various parts of plants including leaves, fruits and  flowers. Hibiscus sabdiriffa (Roselle) is one such plant whose flowers are used to prepare juices. The roselle extract has a unique red colour, good flavour, low sugar and high acidic content. The acidity makes the juice sour hence the need for addition of sweetening products. A study was conducted on the formulation of roselle extract-tropical fruit blends aimed at  establishing its physiochemical, mineral and antioxidant composition. Dried roselle calyces at a ratio of 1:10 (dried roselle calyces: water) were  extracted at 50oC for 30 minutes. The roselle extracts were blended at various proportions of fruit (mango, papaya and guava) juices.  Physiochemical, mineral composition and antioxidant properties were  evaluated in all the roselle fruit juice blends The results for all roselle-fruit blends (80% roselle to 20% roselle) showed that pH ranged between  (2.35-3.32), total soluble solids (5.6-10.6o Brix), titratable acidity  (1.28-1.92 %), reducing sugars (2.95-5.55) mg/100g,. Calcium  (555.3-23.4 mg/100g DM), Magnesium (213.8-11.5 mg/100g DM),  Phosphorus (39.8-9.0 mg/100g DM), Sodium (2.3-5.47 mg/100g DM), Zinc (5.85-0.69 mg/100g DM), Iron (29.5-1.36 mg/100g DM), monomeric  anthocyanin (493.5-118.2 mg cyanidin-3-glucoside/100g), vitamin C  (40.0-86.5 mg/100g), total phenol (54.6-10.8 mg gallic acid/ 100 g) and antioxidant activity (1.80-1.37 mmol/L). Blending of tropical fruit juices with roselle extract have improved mineral composition and antioxidant  properties of fruit juices as roselle is a good source of calcium, magnesium and iron. Antioxidants acts as free radical scavengers inhibit lipid  peroxidation and other free radical mediated process, therefore,  consumption of roselle-fruit juices with high anthocyanin will protect human body from several diseases attributed to the reactions of free radicals.Key words: Roselle, Fruit juice, Antioxidants, Mineral

    Projectile Δ\Delta Excitations in p(p,n)Nπp(p,n)N\pi Reactions

    It has recently been proven from measurements of the spin-transfer coefficients DxxD_{xx} and DzzD_{zz} that there is a small but non-vanishing ΔS=0\Delta S=0 component σ0\sigma_{0}, in the inclusive p(p,n)Nπp(p,n)N\pi\, reaction cross section σ\sigma\,. It is shown that the dominant part of the measured σ0\sigma_{0} can be explained in terms of the projectile Δ\Delta excitation mechanism. An estimate is further made of contributions to σ0\sigma_{0} from s-wave rescattering process. It is found that s-wave rescattering contribution is much smaller than the contribution coming from projectile Δ\Delta excitation mechanism. The addition of s-wave rescattering contribution to the dominant part, however, improves the fit to the data.Comment: 9 pages, Revtex, figures can be obtained upon reques

    The spin correlation coefficient combinations Axx + Ayy, Axx - Ayy and the analyzing powers Ay(theta) were measured for pp-->pnpi+ at beam energies of 325, 350, 375 and 400 MeV. A polarized internal atomic hydrogen target and a stored, polarized proton beam were used. These polarization observables are sensitive to contributions of higher partial waves.     Relativistic Effects in the Scalar Meson Dynamics

    A separable potential formalism is used to describe the ππ\pi\pi and KKK\overline{K} interactions in the scalar-isoscalar states in the energy range from the ππ\pi\pi threshold up to 1.4 GeV. Introduction of relativistic propagators into a system of Lippmann-Schwinger equations leads to a very good description of the data (χ2=0.93\chi^{2}=0.93 per one degree of freedom). Three poles are found in this energy region: fo(500) (M=506±10M=506\pm 10 MeV, Γ=494±5\Gamma=494\pm 5 MeV), fo(975) (M=973±2M=973\pm 2 MeV, Γ=29±2\Gamma=29\pm 2 MeV) and fo(1400) (M=1430±5M=1430\pm 5 MeV, Γ=145±25\Gamma=145\pm 25 MeV). The fo(975) state can be interpreted as a KKK\overline{K} bound state. The fo(500) state may be associated with the often postulated very broad scalar resonance under the KKK\overline{K} threshold (sometimes called σ\sigma or ϵ\epsilon meson). The scattering lengths in the ππ\pi\pi and KKK\overline{K} channels have also been obtained. The relativistic approach provides qualitatively new results (e.g. the appearance of the fo(500)) in comparison with previously used nonrelativistic approach.Comment: 30 pages in LaTeX + 5 figures available on request.     Spin observables of the reactions NN -> DeltaN and pd -> Delta (pp)(1S0) in collinear kinematics

    A general formalism for double and triple spin-correlations of the reaction NN -> DeltaN is developed for the case of collinear kinematics. A complete polarization experiment allowing to reconstruct all of the four amplitudes describing this process is suggested. Furthermore, the spin observables of the inelastic charge-exchange reaction pd -> Delta^0(pp)(1S0) are analyzed in collinear kinematics within the single pN scattering mechanism involving the subprocess pn -> Delta^0p. The full set of spin observables related to the polarization of one or two initial particles and one final particle is obtained in terms of three invariant amplitudes of the reaction pd -> Delta (pp)(1S0) and the transition form factor d->(pp)(1S0). A complete polarization experiment for the reaction pd -> Delta^0(pp)(1S0) is suggested which allows one to determine three independent combinations of the four amplitudes of the elementary subprocess NN -> DeltaN.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figur

    Observation of Hadronic W Decays in t-tbar Events with the Collider Detector at Fermilab

    We observe hadronic W decays in t-tbar -> W (-> l nu) + >= 4 jet events using a 109 pb-1 data sample of p-pbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). A peak in the dijet invariant mass distribution is obtained that is consistent with W decay and inconsistent with the background prediction by 3.3 standard deviations. From this peak we measure the W mass to be 77.2 +- 4.6 (stat+syst) GeV/c^2. This result demonstrates the presence of two W bosons in t-tbar candidates in the W (-> l nu) + >= 4 jet channel.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PR

    Search for Kaluza-Klein Graviton Emission in ppˉp\bar{p} Collisions at s=1.8\sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV using the Missing Energy Signature

    We report on a search for direct Kaluza-Klein graviton production in a data sample of 84 pb1{pb}^{-1} of \ppb collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV, recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We investigate the final state of large missing transverse energy and one or two high energy jets. We compare the data with the predictions from a 3+1+n3+1+n-dimensional Kaluza-Klein scenario in which gravity becomes strong at the TeV scale. At 95% confidence level (C.L.) for nn=2, 4, and 6 we exclude an effective Planck scale below 1.0, 0.77, and 0.71 TeV, respectively.Comment: Submitted to PRL, 7 pages 4 figures/Revision includes 5 figure

    Measurement of the lepton charge asymmetry in W-boson decays produced in p-pbar collisions

    We describe a measurement of the charge asymmetry of leptons from W boson decays in the rapidity range 0 enu, munu events from 110+/-7 pb^{-1}of data collected by the CDF detector during 1992-95. The asymmetry data constrain the ratio of d and u quark momentum distributions in the proton over the x range of 0.006 to 0.34 at Q2 \approx M_W^2. The asymmetry predictions that use parton distribution functions obtained from previously published CDF data in the central rapidity region (0.0<|y_l|<1.1) do not agree with the new data in the large rapidity region (|y_l|>1.1).Comment: 13 pages, 3 tables, 1 figur

    Search for Narrow Diphoton Resonances and for gamma-gamma+W/Z Signatures in p\bar p Collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV

    We present results of searches for diphoton resonances produced both inclusively and also in association with a vector boson (W or Z) using 100 pb^{-1} of p\bar p collisions using the CDF detector. We set upper limits on the product of cross section times branching ratio for both p\bar p\to\gamma\gamma + X and p\bar p\to\gamma\gamma + W/Z. Comparing the inclusive production to the expectations from heavy sgoldstinos we derive limits on the supersymmetry-breaking scale sqrt{F} in the TeV range, depending on the sgoldstino mass and the choice of other parameters. Also, using a NLO prediction for the associated production of a Higgs boson with a W or Z boson, we set an upper limit on the branching ratio for H\to\gamma\gamma. Finally, we set a lower limit on the mass of a `bosophilic' Higgs boson (e.g. one which couples only to \gamma, W, and Z$ bosons with standard model couplings) of 82 GeV/c^2 at 95% confidence level.Comment: 30 pages, 11 figure
