Cigarette smoking and risk of epithelial ovarian cancer
An increased risk of mucinous ovarian tumors among cigarette smokers has been observed in multiple studies. The association of smoking with other histologic types of ovarian cancer is less clear, but potentially holds greater importance for prevention of disease incidence and mortality.
METHODS:
In a population-based study of 812 women with ovarian cancer diagnosed in western Washington State from 2002-2005 and 1,313 controls, we assessed the risk associated with cigarette smoking, with a particular focus on tumor subgroups jointly classified according to the degree of invasiveness and histology. Information was collected through in-person interviews, and logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).
RESULTS:
The incidence of both borderline and invasive mucinous ovarian tumors was increased among women with a history of cigarette smoking (ORs and 95% CIs = 1.8, 1.2-2.9, and 1.8, 0.8-4.3, respectively). Increases in risk of these tumor types were most evident among women with greater smoking duration and pack-years of exposure, and among those who had smoked within the prior 15 years. We noted no clear patterns of risk of serous tumors with duration or pack-years of smoking; however, risk of these tumor types was somewhat elevated among women who had smoked within the previous 15 years (for borderline serous tumors, OR and 95% CI = 1.5, 0.9-2.3; for invasive serous tumors, OR and 95% CI = 1.4, 1.1-1.9). The risk of endometrioid, clear cell, and the remaining histologic types of invasive ovarian cancer was not increased among smokers.
CONCLUSION:
In the aggregate, evidence is insufficient to determine whether smoking is linked with risk of serous or other non-mucinous histologic types of ovarian cancer. Studies that employ additional histopathologic and molecular techniques to more accurately delineate subsets of tumors may improve our understanding of the impact of smoking on ovarian cancer risk
Projectile Excitations in Reactions
It has recently been proven from measurements of the spin-transfer
coefficients and that there is a small but non-vanishing
component , in the inclusive reaction
cross section . It is shown that the dominant part of the measured
can be explained in terms of the projectile excitation
mechanism. An estimate is further made of contributions to from
s-wave rescattering process. It is found that s-wave rescattering contribution
is much smaller than the contribution coming from projectile
excitation mechanism. The addition of s-wave rescattering contribution to the
dominant part, however, improves the fit to the data.Comment: 9 pages, Revtex, figures can be obtained upon reques
A Combined MG II/CA II Survey of Stellar Magnetic Activity in the Solar Neighborhood
We use nearly contemporaneus low-resolution IUE observations of Mg II h + k emission and Mount Wilson Observatory Ca II H + K S indices for 33 pairs of observations of lower main sequence stars to formulate a relationship that will permit accurate predictions of S values as a function of (B - V) color and Mg II h + k flux. The resulting relationship is useful because it will extend the set of solar neighborhood stars for which a uniform estimate of chromospheric activity is available to include stars that are not observable from Mount Wilson as well as providing additional estimates of activity levels for stars that are on the Mount Wilson HK Project observing list
The effects of self-awareness on body movement indicators of the intention to deceive
A study was conducted to investigate the body movements of participants waiting to be interviewed in one of two conditions: preparing to answer questions truthfully or preparing to lie. The effects of increased self-awareness were also investigated, with half of the participants facing a mirror; the other half facing a blank wall. Analysis of covertly obtained video footage showed a significant interaction for the duration of hand/arm movements between deception level and self-awareness. Without a mirror, participants expecting to lie spent less time moving their hands than those expecting to tell the truth; the opposite was seen in the presence of a mirror. Participants expecting to lie also had higher levels of anxiety and thought that they were left waiting for less time than those expecting to tell the truth. These findings led to the identification of further research areas with the potential to support deception detection in security applications
Risk of epithelial ovarian cancer in relation to benign ovarian conditions and ovarian surgery.
OBJECTIVE: Some forms of ovarian neoplasms may be preventable through the removal of precursor lesions. We assessed the risk associated with a prior diagnosis of, and ovarian surgery following, ovarian cysts and endometriosis, with a focus on characterizing risk among tumor subgroups. METHODS: Information was collected during in-person interviews with 812 women with ovarian cancer diagnosed in western Washington State from 2002 to 2005 and 1,313 population-based controls. Logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: The risk of a borderline mucinous ovarian tumor associated with a history of an ovarian cyst was increased (OR=1.7, 95% CI: 1.0-2.8), but did not vary notably according to receipt of subsequent ovarian surgery. While risk of invasive epithelial ovarian cancer was slightly increased among women with a cyst who had no subsequent ovarian surgery, it was reduced when a cyst diagnosis was followed by surgery (OR = 0.6, 95% CI: 0.4-0.9). This reduction in risk was most evident for serous invasive tumors. Women with a history of endometriosis had a threefold increased risk of endometrioid and clear cell invasive tumors, with a lesser risk increase among women who underwent subsequent ovarian surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest differences in the relation of ovarian cysts and endometriosis with risk of specific subtypes of ovarian cancer as well as the possibility that ovarian surgery in women with these conditions may lower the risk of invasive disease
The Great Escape: The Role of Self-esteem and Self-related Cognition in Terror Management
Integrating terror management theory and objective self-awareness theory, we propose the
existential escape hypothesis, which states that people with low self-esteem should be
especially prone to escaping self-awareness as a distal response to thoughts of death. This is
because they lack the means to bolster the self as a defense, and the propensity to bolster the
self reduces the motivation to escape from self-awareness. Five studies supported this
hypothesis. Individuals low, but not high, in self-esteem scored lower on a measure of private
self-awareness (Study 1), showed less implicit self-activation (Studies 2 & 3), were more
likely to choose to write about others than themselves (Study 4), and consumed more alcohol
in a field study at a nightclub (Study 5) in response to mortality reminders. Implications for
terror management theory (highlighting an additional route to defend against mortality
awareness), self-regulation, physical health and well-being are discussed
Relativistic Effects in the Scalar Meson Dynamics
A separable potential formalism is used to describe the and
interactions in the scalar-isoscalar states in the energy range
from the threshold up to 1.4 GeV. Introduction of relativistic
propagators into a system of Lippmann-Schwinger equations leads to a very good
description of the data ( per one degree of freedom). Three
poles are found in this energy region: fo(500) ( MeV,
MeV), fo(975) ( MeV, MeV) and
fo(1400) ( MeV, MeV). The fo(975) state can be
interpreted as a bound state. The fo(500) state may be
associated with the often postulated very broad scalar resonance under the
threshold (sometimes called or meson). The
scattering lengths in the and channels have also been
obtained. The relativistic approach provides qualitatively new results (e.g.
the appearance of the fo(500)) in comparison with previously used
nonrelativistic approach.Comment: 30 pages in LaTeX + 5 figures available on request. Preprint Orsay No

Spin observables of the reactions NN -> DeltaN and pd -> Delta (pp)(1S0) in collinear kinematics
A general formalism for double and triple spin-correlations of the reaction
NN -> DeltaN is developed for the case of collinear kinematics. A complete
polarization experiment allowing to reconstruct all of the four amplitudes
describing this process is suggested. Furthermore, the spin observables of the
inelastic charge-exchange reaction pd -> Delta^0(pp)(1S0) are analyzed in
collinear kinematics within the single pN scattering mechanism involving the
subprocess pn -> Delta^0p. The full set of spin observables related to the
polarization of one or two initial particles and one final particle is obtained
in terms of three invariant amplitudes of the reaction pd -> Delta (pp)(1S0)
and the transition form factor d->(pp)(1S0). A complete polarization experiment
for the reaction pd -> Delta^0(pp)(1S0) is suggested which allows one to
determine three independent combinations of the four amplitudes of the
elementary subprocess NN -> DeltaN.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figur
