    Observations of the California countercurrent

Spatially dense observations in consecutive years in a region within about 50 km of the continental shelf show a complex structure of southern water undergoing dilution by mixing as it flows northward. An eddy a few tens of km in diameter appears to be a major contributor to the mixing process. Marked differences are seen in structure and flow between the two years

Between college and work in the Further Education and Training College sector

    Get PDF
Students studying Civil Engineering (CE) at the Further Education and Training (FET) colleges spend periods of time in the classroom and workshop as well as in the workplace during experiential learning. The overall purpose of education and training in the college sector is generally understood as preparing students for employability, and difficulties in colleges performing this role are well known. In this article, these difficulties are examined in a novel way. The everyday perspectives of lecturers and supervisors about student learning in their college programmes and their work experience are translated into more theoretical language, using activity theory. A theoretical argument is made, which suggests that different sites of learning create different purposes, and that these different purposes derive from a distinction between knowledge and practice, which in turn has historical roots. The study concludes by suggesting that a new, common object of integrating theory and practice at all the sites would better link the college and workplace education and training systems, and tentatively suggests how this new object could be put into practice.Key words: activity theory; civil engineering; further education and training; theory and practic

LISA Response Function and Parameter Estimation

We investigate the response function of LISA and consider the adequacy of its commonly used approximation in the high-frequency range of the observational band. We concentrate on monochromatic binary systems, such as white dwarf binaries. We find that above a few mHz the approxmation starts becoming increasingly inaccurate. The transfer function introduces additional amplitude and phase modulations in the measured signal that influence parameter estmation and, if not properly accounted for, lead to losses of signal-to-noise ratio.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, amaldi 5 conference proceeding

BLENDED LEARNING STRATEGIES: OPPORTUNITIES AND LIMITATIONS OF USING YOUTUBE VIDEOS TO SUPPORT READY RELEVANT LEARNING

    Get PDF
In this thesis, we develop a business case analysis of the use of YouTube with the Navy’s Ready Relevant Learning. We assess current literature regarding the effectiveness of YouTube videos for enhancing adult learning and job performance. We then identify the requirements for the Navy to implement YouTube learning and discuss the advantages and limitations associated with using YouTube for learning. Additionally, we conduct a qualitative analysis of data obtained from interviews with students and instructors at a Navy vocational training site on the use of digital learning strategies. We place the main findings from the interviews in the context of the current literature to validate that YouTube can be an effective tool to enhance learning. We conclude that YouTube is a viable tool for vocational training and we recommend that the Navy conduct a pilot program to identify implementation needs to scale effectively the use of YouTube as a training tool.NPS Naval Research ProgramThis project was funded in part by the NPS Naval Research Program.Lieutenant Commander, United States NavyLieutenant, United States NavyApproved for public release.
